Week #9 - Games of Interest
Today's release of both the AP Top 25 Poll and the USA Today Poll once again finds no A-10 teams in the rankings. VCU was only A-10 school to get any votes, 2 in the AP poll.
With the loss to Virginia Tech, Duke fell to the #8 position in both polls. Cincinnati moves up one slot to #22 in both polls. Other than Duke and Cincinnati, no other URI OOC opponents are getting any votes in either poll.
Villanova continues as the #1 ranked team in both polls.
The cumulative won-lost record of URI OOC opponents moves to 99-64, a winning percentage of .607, a slight decrease from the previous week.
No A-10 games on this Monday holiday.
In games involving URI OOC opponents:
Holy Cross snuck by Navy. 51-50.
Marist edged Manhattan, 90-88 in OT.
Old Dominion beat North Texas, 55-48.
William & Mary beats Hofstra in OT, 95-93, with the winning shot a NBA length 3-pointer at the buzzer!!

Re: Week #9 - Games of Interest
Tuesday action in the A-10:
Saint Joseph's at URI. 7 PM. On CBSSN.
Dayton at St. Bonaventure. 8 PM.
In games involving URI OOC opponents:
In a cross-country battle, Cal State-Bakersfield visits Dartmouth. 7 PM. After losing their first nine games, Dartmouth now has won three in a row.
Other games of interest:
BC is at so-so Wake Forest. 7 PM. On ACCN. Wake Forest lost its first two ACC games. Has BC turned a corner after wining four of its last five games??
In an intra-state fracas, 12-1 Kansas State pays a visit to 12-1 #3 Kansas. 9 PM On ESPN3. K-State handed Saint Louis a 31 margin defeat, second only to the Billikens' loss to URI last week. But is K-State a perpetual bridesmaid in Kansas??

Dayton beats St. Bonaventure, 90-74. Dayton hit 3-pointers at a 61% clip putting in 14 shots.
In games involving URI OOC opponents:
Cal State-Bakersfield edges Dartmouth, 64-60 snapping the Big Green's three game win streak.
Other games of interest:
BC led at the half, but a big second half surge ended any hopes for another ACC win as the Deacons won, 79-66.
In the Sunflower State rivalry game, Kansas puts in a lay-up with less than a second left to beat K-State, 90-88. The Kansas player was clearly traveling prior to the shot, but what ref is going to call that in Lawrence!!

Wednesday night results in the A-10:
VCU beat back Duquesne, 94-87. This was a close game for the first 25 minutes. The Dukes actually grabbed a two point lead for a bit, but then VCU took control and built a 18 point margin with a minute and a half remaining, before the Dukes were able to whittled it down in garbage time.
Fordham loses at Richmond, 80-72. Richmond, receiving balanced scoring from it starting five, led the entire game though the Spiders could not achieve much separation until about the 13 minute mark in second half when they built their biggest lead at 15 points.
UMass loses at George Mason, 86-81. This was a close game all the way. UMass blew a 13 point lead late in first half, and the Patriots finally took the lead in the second. UMass had a last gasp when it narrowed the GMU lead to 2 points with 27 seconds left on a Jarreau lay-up but great FT shooting by Marquise Moore prevented UMass from getting any closer. Only 2,755 watched this one.
Saint Louis stayed close for the first half, but La Salle pulled away in second to beat the Billikens easily, 75-54.
In games involving URI OOC opponents:
Georgia Tech routed by Duke, 110-57. Grayson Allen was back in game and scored 15 points in 27 minutes of PT.
Brown loses a close one to NJIT, 75-73.
PC over Georgetown, 76-70.
Houston won its third straight as the Cougars rallied to beat Tulsa, 64-61.

Houston/Tulsa game looks like it went similar to our game with them - they were saddled with a modest halftime deficit but dominated the second half to win almost comfortably.

Hot shooting by GW, 61% on 3-pointers, offsets 17 GW turnovers to give the Colonials a 73-69 win over Davidson. Closely contested game all the way, though GW led most of the time.

Tough 0-2 start for Davidson. A little surprising to me. They played Kansas and UNC so tough I thought they'd be better than that.

Jack Gibbs gives me nightmares but looks like him and Peyton Aldridge aren't enough to get it done for Davidson. It's still early but very surprising they couldn't beat Richmond at home and GW on the road.

Crazy game Northeastern at home vs Delaware
NE a 12 point favorite had a 58-18 lead at the half - 40 points!
Won 90-54
NE shot 21-33 on 3 pointers for 64% so 63 of their 90 points came on 3's........
NE shot 7-19 on FTs for 37%. So should NE shoot their FTs from the 3 point line? Is that even allowed by the rules?
NE shot 10-18 on 2 pointers so only 20 of 90 points came on the traditional 2 point shot.

Oakland was the much better team. And their style was what I was expecting out of us this year. A lot of overplay, risk taking, pressure defense, and high octane offense. We should have handled Valpo out there.

Today's results so far:
In the A-10:
VCU beat up a young UMass team, 81-64. VCU put in their threes, UMass did not. The game was close most of the first half, but VCU opened up at big lead half way though second and cruised to the win. VCU out rebounded UMass, 45-32. UMass' Rashaan Holloway is becoming a player to be reckoned with as he played 25 minutes and put up 22 points.
Saint Joseph's rebounded from their Ryan debacle to easily whip Fordham, 70-55. In the second half, the Metro Rams cut the Hawks lead to 5 on a Anderson trey at the 13 minute mark and then failed to score for the next seven minutes and the Hawks ballooned the lead to 21 points.
Bonnies put away George Mason from the beginning to win, 82-72.
In games involving URI OOC opponents:
Creighton over PC, 78-64.
Old Dominion makes a second half comeback to beat Western Kentucky, 79-67.
Duke in a easy one over BC, 93-82. Duke led by 19 at the the half.

Re: Week #9 - Games of Interest
La Salle beat Duquesne, 88-81. The game was close in the first half and the Explorers began to pull away in the second with the Dukes shaving the big margin to five before folding. These are two of the worst drawing teams in the A-10 and given storm conditions in Philly, a crowd under 2000 is likely.
La Salle comes to Ryan next Thursday and they will give us a tussle especially if URI enters the game with little enthusiasm and a Dayton hangover. La Salle is a great FT shooting team, they put in 24 of 25 against the Dukes, for example. Must sweep the home-home series with them.

Unlike the URI experience at Houston, Cincinnati took control of this game from the onset and kept their boot on the Cougars' throat and never let up to take the win, 67-58.

Re: Week #9 - Games of Interest
Cincinnati has looked very impressive. Beside their typical, stellar D, shot the ball well too. Based on the games each team, Houston and Cincy, played against us, I thought Cincy would win, even though they lost to us. They play SMU on Thursday at home and if they win that one, will clearly be team to beat in the AAC. I think they win that one and go on to win AAC and be ranked entire year. Kind of amazing we beat them , when we folded against Valpo. PC, Houston and Dayton.

The only game against a good team this season that we didn't seem to play tight at the end......
The others? When Dan tries to ramp up his micromanaging late in games, the play reflects that.
Tight coach, tight players.

Re: Week #9 - Games of Interest
OK, Sunday games complete week #9 and in the A-10,there two games of interest:
Richmond at GW. 12 noon. On NBCSN. This game will give another info point as which of these two will be the more formidable opponent for URI. GW is a home game while the Richmond game is away. Last year we easily beat Richmond at Ryan and the previous year we beat them at Robins, 79-74, in a game we led all the way.
As for GW, we lost a close one last year at GW in a road game pattern that has become all too frequent this year. In the previous year we won over GW at Ryan. Simply stated we need to beat both teams this year if we have Dance hopes!
Davidson at Saint Louis. 2 PM. On NBCSN. How Davidson handles the Billikens will be interesting because they are a tough opponent and one where we need to notch a road win.
In games involving URI OOC opponents:
Detroit Mercy at Valparaiso. 1 PM. On ESPN3.
Bucknell at Holy Cross. 1 PM.
Marist at Monmouth. 2 PM. On ESPN3

While it is still early in second half, you have to be impressed with the pounding Richmond is applying to GW on the Colonials' home court.

Re: Week #9 - Games of Interest
Richmond finally won game 77-70. After the Spiders beat up GW for most of game with a margin that got as high as 23 points in the second half, GW came to life and went on a 19-4 run. The Colonials eventually cut the margin to four on a Jaren Sina 3-pointer with 30 seconds left, but the late game heroics went Richmond's way.

Re: Week #9 - Games of Interest
Hot shooting brought Richmond the win with four of their five starters in double digit scoring. The unheralded Spiders move their A-10 record to 3-0, with two of those wins notably coming on the road against good teams, Davidson and GW. They will give the Rams all they can handle in our January 25 match-up with them.

Re: Week #9 - Games of Interest
We dominated St. Joes....without their best player......so even that game might have been somewhat of a mirage.
St. Louis is beyond bad....games against teams like Richmond and GW will be very telling going forward...lose either one....bye-bye.
Davidson I expect a loss and one also to UMass there.......and St.Joes at Hagan will be a struggle.
Don't think so? Just wait. I expect us to finish 3rd-4th in conference.......with another loss to either Dayton or VCU at home....most likely VCU.
Is that 5-6 losses? Yeah about right.
Let's see, a win in the A10T, followed by a loss.....ending RPI in the 50's.......a 3 or 4 NIT seed.....you read it here first ladies and gentlemen.
