Game 13: St. Louis Friday Dec 30 @7:00pm ESPNU Chaifetz Arena

Unread post by RoadyJay »

St. Louis completed the non-conference schedule with a 4-8 record.

There has been much talk about offense on the board lately. Well, if you were hoping to see a really bad offense you will see one tomorrow night. Per kenpom they are the 341st ranked offense in the country. That's 341st out of 351 teams playing D1.

Our defense usually comes to play and we should have a goal to hold them to under 60 points. They have been held to under 60 points in 6 of their 12 games and held to 45 points twice.

Their leading scorer and point guard, Jermaine Bishop, has been sidelined for the last 3 games with an ankle injury. From what I've read he will likely return against us tomorrow night.

Likely Starters:
Davell Roby 6'4 Junior G
Reggie Agbeko 6'7 Senior F
Jermaine Bishop 6'1 Sophomore G
Mike Crawford 6'4 Senior G
Elliott Welmer 6'9 Redshirt Freshman F

......I would like to see something different, different in the starting lineup that I feel can ignite the offense, get us going and give us a different look; we know changes in the starters are not easy for DH.....assume HM is out for this game; option 1) sit KI and start SR, play a shortened bench......for me the anticipated spark here is SR, maybe create some offense from defense, let's get him going with some major minutes to see what he can deliver......no?

105, the issue I see with sitting KI and starting SR instead is that they start a 6'9 guy with perimeter skills in Welmer and a 6'7 post player/rebounding machine in Agbeko. If we start 4 guards we would put ourselves at a disadvantage. I think we need KI (to cover Welmer) and Langevine (to cover Agbeko) to start the game.

SR will get his minutes but I don't see it at the expense of sitting KI.

105 and RJ,
In the Coaches Show towards the end of the roughly 1 hour discussion, there is a segment on strategy for SLU.
DH said many teams are now playing 3-4 guards or a quick forward and 3 guards. He said SLU does not play like William & Mary or Holy Cross or others we have seen this year. Therefore he said Andre Berry could see more action Friday night vs SLU. His defense is a challenge with smaller, quicker guys, but SLU fits Berry.
He also said Robinson's minutes could increase up to 25 or so and that Robinson was the most energetic player at practice that day.

......for me bringing in SR he was intended to be on the floor in the deep bench rotations that apparently has not panned out as expected......and coming with some ready to go skills ahead of the freshmen.....just don't think he has been given enough minutes to get him going......(no clue what his per game minutes are).....would like him to get the 25+ even off the bench.....let's really see what he can deliver now......KI apparent funk/foul trouble concerns me.....No??

That's basically what DH said in the show, Robinson to see 25 minutes plus.

I agree on more minutes for SR and per Coach Hurley it appears that will happen. I also agree with you on concerns about KI, but I still think he gets the start tomorrow. I think the opportunity for KI to come off the bench would be when Hass comes back and we potentially start both Hass and Langevine together.

One interesting note to this game, Jared Terrell goes up against Travis Ford, who he initially committed to while Ford was at OK State.

From the Game Notes posted on GoRhody.com:

TODAY'S RHODE ISLAND FACTS YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT

The Super Mario Brothers - E.C. Matthews and Hassan Martin - have played together in 72 career games.
Rhode Island is 42-30 in those games, including a 28-13 mark over their last 41 games on the floor together.
After a season-high three turnovers at Valpo on Nov. 29, Stanford Robinson has gone the last five games (105 minutes) without a TO.
Rhody has two wins (three total) this season when shooting less than 40.0%. URI won three such games (nine total) in 2015-16.

A subtle hint that Hass is playing tomorrow night?

It's going to be very interesting when Hass and CT are back and we are at full-strength. Also, with Langevine's and Stan's emergence they have earned the right for extended minutes.. Good problem to have but it will be interesting to see how the minutes are spread around.

Is it possible for us to win a road game and look good doing it?

That's what I want to see.......

We'll win, but it won't be easy......could we score 70 points?

Rambone I don't think we need style points in conference away games, IMO. They are always tough, any win is a good one, just be happy and move on.

I think we may stay in the 60's. 68-58 something like that.

I think having him only play if things are going south is the worst thing to do with that injury. So he gets warmed up pregame, then he gets cold, then he has to come in late in a tight situation without proper time to loosen the muscle? I hope the radio guys are wrong.
