Week #5 - Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

As expected, URI fell out of both the AP Top 25 poll and the USA Today poll. What is a bit of a surprise is that in the AP poll URI got no votes at all, whereas the other school that dropped out, Syracuse, is the top vote getter in the others category.

In the AP poll, Duke holds the #5 slot and Cincinnati on the strength of its road win over ranked Iowa State moves up #22 and among others, Valparaiso got 7 votes.

In the USA Today poll, Duke grabs the #4 position and Cincinnati gets #23. Valparaiso got one vote. URI got 11 votes. No other A-10 teams were represented in either poll.

Villanova now assumes the #1 ranking in both polls.

The cumulative won-lost record of URI OOC opponents moves to 57-35, a winning percentage of .619. This stat is higher than at anytime in recent history.

No action tonight in either the A-10 or among URI OOC opponents. Only game of some interest is the Syracuse-Connecticut contest at Madison Square Garden. 7 PM. On ESPN2

Obadiah, Eli#10,

A great game to watch will be this Saturday 4:30pm on FS1: #22 Cincinnati (7-1) @ #16 Butler (8-0). Eli#10 will like this to see how Andrew Chrabascz plays for Butler :D :D
Will be interesting to see how Cincinnati does in Butlers famous home court.

UConn vs the 'cuse is a pretty entertaining battle...1 point game with 6 to play

tied...2 seconds to play.

Neither is very good this year...Syracuse is having problems recruiting because Boeheim is a lame duck.....

UConn lost their 2 best players for the season.... no NCAA for either of them.....

Connecticut started the season Nationally Ranked #18

1st two games of the season they lost to Wagner and to Northeastern before anyone got injured

No way freshman Alterique Gilbert was one of their 2 best players. He is not better than Jalen Adams or Rodney Purvis

UCONN beat BU at home by 2 points

and UCONN now 4-4 is shooting a disaster 62% on Free Throws

Oh I don't know
Let's see

The Point Spread was 10 points
The Board gamblers saw that as easy money by betting against URI. Can't believe it is that high
Then Martin Injury happens
Vegas lowers the Point Spread to 7.5 :D :D
Board Gamblers are giddy with joy that they got 10 Points :D :D :D :D :D :D
URI without Martin beats the original 10 Point Spread      :o :o :o :o :o

Morale of the story Rambone is don't bet against the Rhody Rams

Actually I did bet on us once....when I was in Vegas some years ago, when I bet a parley on the Xavier A10 tourney semifinal game....took us to cover as a dog and the over...we won the game and tied on the over....won some money......

Wonder what happens to #21 Florida after they get beat by Duke.

URI lost that game and then lost both games last week like they didn't mentally prepare themselves for that week. 2 away games like last week should not have been overlooked. I obviously think we played a bit flat last week, especially at Valpo. I honestly have no idea how we lost against PC sitting as high as I sat. Sitting that high you just watch the scoreboard. Have no idea what happens on the court.

Last night the A-10 went 3-3 and it was not a very good performance. The winning teams included Dayton in a push over versus a D2 team, URI the winner of a rock fight, and a road win by the Bonnies at so-so Hofstra. La Salle turned in a good performance in defeat against #1 Villanova, Duquesne could not sustain its City success as they fell to Robert Morris, and cold shooting Saint Louis was routed at Wichita State.

Among OOC opponents, Duke prevailed by ten points over #21 Florida, Houston kept close to Arkansas in first half, but eventually wilted to lose 84-72, and Belmont in a OT thriller beat Lipscomb, 78-76.

The school in Rhode Island that has garnered national attention, though it has been for adversity, is Bryant. Last night night Bryant blew a 25 point halftime lead to lose at Navy, 76-74. This was the biggest comeback in Navy history and was the second biggest comeback in all NCAA history, bested only by a Duke 29 point comeback!! Not the kind of attention a school wants.

Only played 29 minutes, due to foul trouble.

Wednesday night action in A-10 includes:

George Mason at Penn State. 7 PM. On BTN.

Georgia Tech at VCU. 7 PM. On ESPNU.

GW at Temple. 7:30 PM. On CBSSN.

Davidson at #7 North Carolina. 9 PM. On ESPN2.

Saint Louis at 7-2 Wichita State. 8 PM. On ESPN3.

In games involving URI OOC opponents:

The most interesting game of the evening is a battle between 7-1 teams, as Valparaiso plays at #6 Kentucky. 8 PM. On SECN. This is Valpo's first game after they defeated URI at home. Will they be rested or rusty??

Holy Cross at Maine. 5:30 PM.

Marist at Albany. 7 PM. On ESPN3

0-6 Dartmouth at Vermont. 7 PM.

Agree Obadiah. Will be interesting to see how Peters fares vs Kentucky. I think Butler at Indiana State is an interesting game. Butler better not be looking past in state rival Indiana State to Saturday's match up with Cincinnati

In state Davidson at UNC is interesting. Can Jack Gibbs have a career night?

Biggest college basketball game of the night is #1 UCONN vs #2 Notre Dame women. Both undefeated.

Yes without HM it will be tough, but we have several very winnable games coming up even without him.....

I think we might beat Houston....as long as the offense has a pulse......

Yes, saw that. Butler was favored by 10 points but very much expected to win that game. Takes a little away from the Saturday match up of Cincinnati at Butler. Will be interesting to see how Butler handles this unexpected defeat.

Thats what's scary about the a10 this year. You look at a team like Umass who is starting 3 freshman and they will definitely be better by the time we play them. LaSalle with their transfers is another team who could really find their rhythm as the season goes on. Definitely will be some challenging games other than the expected VCU, Dayton and Davidson.

Besides #16 Butler favored by 10 and losing by 1 at Indiana State
#13 Xavier was favored by 1 and lost by 2 at Colorado
The road can be cruel but can build toughness that can pay off in Conference and Post Season Play. You see who steps up and who doesn't on your team in more hostile environments

Good to see Xavier and Butler continuing their past traditions of playing tough OOC schedules and missing in road games. NCAA used to recognize that kind of scheduling in the past more than they do today

#8 Gonzaga took on instate rival Washington and Markell Fultz winning by 27 to remain undefeated

Watched parts of most of those games.
In the Gonzaga blowout, Miles Simon decided that the game was no
longer relevant, and just kept babbling about everything and anything.
(Dickie V style)
Meanwhile baskets are being scored.
On and on about Makell Fultz (Gotta ask John if he's related) who got hurt.
Miles still talking. Woman announcer not bothering to tell us
who made those baskets.
Insanity for anyone watching this crap.

Yes and both of those coaches stepped into prime coaching jobs that were already established as perennial sweet 16 teams. For YEARS. Both previous coaches (2 previous coaches in Xavier's case) left for bigger and better things, so neither coach even came close to having to resurrect a dead program and fan base.

Let me know if either of them could have stepped into the situation Hurley did and performed any better, or not high tailed it out of here when a P5 program came calling.
