POLL: PC or URI and by How Much?

Unread post by ramster »

Predictions?

I am going with URI to win by at least 10.
Why?
- We start 3 Senior Level players and 2 Excellent Juniors in Garrett and Terrell
- Martin and Iverson will be playing their last game against the Friars, EC possibly his last
- Dan Hurley, Staff, Players and Fans are due for a victory
- Robinson has shown he can provide quality depth for the Guards and one could argue he is good enough to start at some point during the season
- Guys will be fired up
- Thompson could be a key
- Langevine can provide help off the bench
- Martin, Iverson and Langevine will block 8 or more shots
- PC getting scoring from only 2 or 3 players typically
- Cartwright will have more difficulty with Garrett than he has had with other PGs this year
- Martin is amazing this year with his FT percentage. Phenomenal turnaround. Could be a key to this game as URI looks to go low to Martin, let him draw fouls and make the FTs and at the same time get PCs big men in foul trouble where they have little proven depth
- Not much expected from EC and he could be a big surprise for us
- Terrell will be pumped up and could be the dominant player in the game
- URI presses early on to get into a running game sooner than later
- Somebody for URI surprises off the bench - Thompson? Akele? Dowtin? Robinson? Berry? Other?
- DH comes in with a solid game plan amid low expectations from fans versus Cooley who gets rave reviews

Being unbiased, it'll be close and I think it comes down to free throws, which fortunately is one thing we are consistent with this season. URI has more talent, but it comes to down to IF we can play to our potential and play SMART. Tough environment, but playing Duke was in my opinion, more intimidating.

The way URI has played since the Duke game hasn't been encouraging, while PC has played solid basketball. With that being said, Rams by 10 as they get back on track and show us more of the team we were hoping for.

I'm all about honest opinions and if you truly think PC will ride their momentum and URI will continue their skid then I'm fine with that. However, Rhody has much more talent and should be able to expose PC. These games are always close so I won't predict a +10 point blowout, but URI will ultimately win this game. It's time for EC to prove to all of us that nothing is wrong with him and that he's willing to accept contact, being aggressive to the basket.

Leading scorer projection: Jared Terrell with 22 on the night!

Go Rhody!

Probably right about the Sly Williams games. I doubt that we'll ever see games like those again. Both.teams were great.
But, we KNEW we were good then, no matter the result. This year is different. A win and we may be on our way. A loss could be pretty bad.
I'm picking PC by 6. Also hoping I'm wrong.

I think over the so many games I have been to over the years, my favorite game was when Rhody beat Friars for ECAC championship in 1978. Sat in the Civic Center with a die hard PC fan and watched him wilt . Crowd was as electric as it gets. Ahh the great Sly Williams. And we beat Dave Gavitt . Precious.

Really? So they only think as a unit?
Martin has played them 3 times.
EC, Terrell and Garrett, twice.
Bottom line, not one player or coach, except
ARD, has ever beaten PC.

Neil, I was at that game with my cousin Rocky,
who was a Fairfield grad.
We beat Fairfield the night before, and it was like
sitting with a corpse.
What a wonderful game!
Ragged the shit out of some Legislators that Monday.
Another favorite was our 44 point ass kicking of PC.
When Sly left the game, he had more points than PC.
Somehow, we lost the return game.
I think those years with Jack Kraft, after he got his own
players, were a wonderful time.
Imagine, we averaged 9,200 a game at the PCC in 1977-78.

I don't think that people picking PC necessarily have 'baggage'...I have just a couple years of eye test - season tix, many road trips done and planned, but, even in my couple years...seems clear Cooley is the better coach and what Adam said pretty much sums it up..."because well, that's how these things tend to go". Hopefully they have the talent to get over the hump...GO RHODY!

Rod, as usual you missed the point. Sports teams turnover. They don't carry the history alumni or life long fans do.
In 2004 Kevin Millar mentioned this. Each team is a unique group. They didn't believe or care about any made up curse or the Sox struggles of the past.

NYG, the quote you posted from Adam is exactly the feeling the Sox fans had about the Yankees until they beat them in 2004 and they have never had it again. The losing streak goes until one day that it doesn't.

This is the year to win. Go Rhody! This group of plsyers deserves are support icluding our belief they will win.

They're carrying some of that baggage. Hurley hasn't beat PC yet. Under Hurley we've played very poorly on the road. Also under Hurley we've failed to win many close games against good opponents.

It's not like everyone on here doesn't want URI to win, we all do. Some of us are just going by what we've watched so far this season which doesn't exactly provide us with a ton of confidence. If people what to act like air headed bubbly everything is fine hippies then that's ok but don't expect everyone to act like that.

As usual?
Well, I've followed this program since before I was in high school,
beginning in 1962-63.
I never remember PC winning six years in a row.
You think Cubs teams over the 100 years or whatever it was,
never heard about the curse?
You don't think when something like Steve Bartman happened, that
in some of the players, they felt,"Here we go again!"?
Same with the Sox with Bucky Dent in 1978, or when Aaron Boone hit the HR off Wakefield in 2003.
You can say none of that exists, because teams turnover,
but the fact is, these curses, jinxes, or whatever, haunt teams,
until the finally, if ever, win.
Whether any of us believe they can or cannot win,
means squat.
I'm sure everyone on here wants URI to win.
It's the players who play the game, not the fans.

What IS true, is that URI and Hurley have been outplayed and outcoached for 6 straight years now.....

Yes, PC has had a talent advantage for a good part of that, but not right now at least. URI has also upset PC many times when they [URI] were the underdog going in.....game wasn't that predictable...well it's gotten very predictable lately.....

If Hurley doesn't change the narrative this season, when will he? Recent results this season don't inspire a lot of confidence that it will change.....

There's plenty of observational support to feel this will probably go as a PC win, it doesn't make me any less passionate about Rhody hoops than anyone else. I desperately want us to win today! To borrow Rod's choice of words, I want us to be a team with "swagger," but we're not that are we? And PC kinda is that, aren't they? Cooley has PC surpassing expectations every season, while that's not exactly the case here. Wish it weren't true, but to date it is and there has been little to support that changing, I'm ever hopeful of course, but reality has a funny way of informing the conversation.

Yep, this is the longest winning streak for PC since the 60s when they beat us 7 times in a row. But that was also when we played twice a year. So, it was only 3 years in a row that we didn't beat them as we split in that 4th year. So, this is the longest amount of time ever that we haven't had a victory.

Bud, you missed my point. I have close to 50 years of history that I can remember well with the Red Sox. That can result in some baggage for sure. I'm aware of what Millar said and how that turned out. What I'm telling you is that, in just a couple years of experience with URI hoops (not decades)...so far...MY experience shows URI not winning close games and Cooley being a better coach. That's not 'baggage'. It's just objective observation. Last year on the way home from the St' Joe's game...we listened to the Seattle-Minnesota playoff game. Told my son, "Minnesota will somehow lose on a kicking play"...not because I had 'baggage' about it, or like dire predictions...I'm not a fan of either team..but because it just seemed that, 'well...that's usually how those things turn out'....

The team has my support...if I'm skeptical about their chances today, it's not because of any 'baggage' I have - haven't been around long enough to accumulate any. However, I'm not 100% sure the players, coaches and program don't...Last year, I was in the same boat as you, thinking 'new year, new players...they don't care about any stinkin' streaks, they're not impacted'...Heard from (several) people more informed than me about that, and now I'm not so sure. Now, if this goes on for say, another 10 years, will I pick some baggage? Maybe, but for now, it's as simple as "experience shows URI not winning close games and Cooley being a better coach"...not because I'm influenced by baggage. Hopefully, they turn that around today. Another poster suggested "Dan comes out with a great game plan"...well, that would be freekn fantastic, but I'll believe that and be one of the first to say 'cheers' to it when I see it.

So...where are you sitting?...let's meet for a brew at halftime ;)

Go Rhody...this would be a HUGE HUGE win.

Great "game plan" or not, it usually ends up wilting under end game pressure...that's on the coach AND players.....

We play slow ball today, we lose, it's really that simple......Dan wants his players "less tight" well maybe if he wasn't so "tight" they wouldn't be....

Stop micromanaging every fucking possession to start....less thinking and more playing.....

You may not have a lot of "baggage," but you've been here long enough to at least have a "carry-on." lol

Ok..I've just been advised that I need to bring my baggage to the front to be checked to my final destination as it will no longer fit in the overhead compartment or underneath the seat in front of me...

I was in the 30% that got it right as it was the most predictable outcome. I however find no comfort in having been right. I wish I had been proven wrong.
