I LOL'ed at the opening Bone. But I will tell you now, we will lose a winnable game. It will happen. It happens to every team in every sport since the games were invented. These are 20 year old kids not robots, they will lay an egg at some point.

Re: Game 7: @ Valparaiso - Tues 8pm ESPN3
But not if we're going to play the style of play Dan wants. He is the one who said he doesn't want anyone playing more than 32 minutes and that he'd like to play 9 or 10 guys because he wants to get out and run and play pressure defense all over the floor.bigappleram wrote:Name bench contributors on the 97-98 team besides Preston Murphy? David Arigbabu? I can't name another. As the season progresses IMO you need 7, at tops 8 guys you can count on. I think we know our first 6, Dan needs to learn who he can trust with those next 2 roles. We need the bench to contribute and play to their strengths. If Cyril could come in and grab some boards, block a shot or two and Nikola could knock down 1-2 three pointers and defend his position well that would be more than enough.

Re: Game 7: @ Valparaiso - Tues 8pm ESPN3
We had ARD ,Luther, and 6'9" Josh King in the 1997=98 team.
Check on how many times any of them fouled out.How can you compare them to the foul kings,
Hassan and Kuran?
Harrick used three guards when he had a late lead. Damned good set of guards.
There were two all time greats, Cat and Tyson, plus Preston.
Also, at the risk of offending the many who never saw that team.
we also had the best URI coach since Frank Keaney, on our bench.

Thank you for injecting some sanity into this thread BAR.bigappleram wrote:Our coach has been consistent in that he values the ability to defend over everything, and he didn't mince words in the preseason in explaining that big Mike wasn't ready to play defense at this level yet. Same situation with Berry. That's why Cyril is playing.
And Hassan played as a Freshman on a crap team - comparing that to playing time for our FR bigs when we are ranked in the Top 25 is apples and oranges.

Agree 100 percent. Play your starting 5 a lot; then play your next 3. End of story.sf2010 wrote:Nobody's asking you to blindly assume anything, but let's think about the competition Hassan had for frontcourt playing time when he was a freshman. yeah, youre totally right. No freshman is ever a vastly improved player in game 30 vs game 1.

I'm optimistic Layssard and Langevine will be as good as Hassan but I'm not going to blindly assume it will happen.
Normally I'm in the camp of giving the younger guys more playing time and letting them learn that way, keeping an eye towards the future. Not. This. Year. This is our year, and Hurley should play the guys who give him the best chance to win every night, based on ability and matchups. When we got up 20 on Belmont he went to the bench, and they got the lead down to 6. Should he have stuck Layssard and Berry in there to let them learn and improve?

Anyone who is calling for Dan to play his starters a lot and use a short bench are basically disagreeing with Dan's philosophy.

Yea I don't know what's happened to the defense, I'm thinking maybe the increase in offense has caused a decrease in defense. If you look back at 2015 3 teams scored more than 61 points against us in our first 12 games (Nebraska 62 in OT, Kansas 76 and PC 68). This year so far 61 is the fewest points a team has scored against us.BleedBlue87 wrote:I would like to see some defensive intensity right at the opening tip tonight. Offense is great this year but I feel like I haven't seen that same type of grittiness and intensity of that 2015 defense. Different team for sure but I figured since this is Dan's most athletic team that the D would be top notch.

Re: Game 7: @ Valparaiso - Tues 8pm ESPN3
The 97-98 team is the best I have seen in my lifestime, slightly better than the 88 team IMO. Only started following in mid 80s so cant speak to the teams from the late 70s. My only point was that none of our great teams went 8-9 deep and brought huge firepower off the bench. We need solid role players to compliment our starting 5 (plus Stan). It's way to early to know if our bench can provide that...we have seen some good flashes from Cyril, Nik and Christian but also some moments when they are invisible. I completely agree that we need a 2-3 man bench that can play meaningful minutes and positively impact the game.

So, BAR, we basically agree.
Bottom line, develop a balanced bench that can be relied on,
or face not living up to the potential breakout season.
You can't play with five guards, you need front-court depth.
Especially when you stress defense, and you aren't the ref's favorite coach.
It's not as if we haven't seen this movie before.
Martin and Iverson seem to always be in foul trouble,
It's a fact.
Many times both are out.
Who's going to rebound? Who's going to score inside?
So far, outside of one good game by Langevine, nobody.
This allows the defense to slough off the interior and
concentrate on the perimeter.
Basketball 101.

Our bench is extremely important this year because Hass and KI get into foul trouble. I thought the bench saved our butts in the Cincinatti game.

So let me get this straight, for years we've been saying each year has to be the year or else, and when it's not there's a meltdown. Now we have people that are saying we need to change how we're doing things this year or else our depth won't be what it needs to be NEXT year? We need our bench to fill roles this year, but we should absolutely not be altering what we're doing to prepare for next year. This year is the only year.

No, I think we need to develop depth for A10 play this year and for postseason. If we play in an NCAA tourney game and Hass and Kuran both get into foul trouble, the way it stands now, we're done.RhowdyRam02 wrote:So let me get this straight, for years we've been saying each year has to be the year or else, and when it's not there's a meltdown. Well I was getting that from posts like this where you're talking about next year's roster.
Billyboy78 wrote:I don't understand why anyone disagrees with my statement that our guards next year will be our best players. One through four and possibly 5 and 6. My statement was in response to Iggy saying don't play the bigs, play your best players. Langevine and one of the other bigs will play big minutes next year. That doesn't mean they're better than Robinson. No, you don't always play your best players the most minutes, especially when you're going to have a team with 7 talented guards.

Meaning we have to develop our bigs, even if they're not our best players. The time to do it was in the first three games and our last two OOC games.RhowdyRam02 wrote:Well I was getting that from posts like this where you're talking about next year's roster.

BAR, I know we will lose some close games, for whatever reason.....yes Adam we will.....count on it.....
However it would be nice if we keep those to a minimum.....win most of the close ones anyway.....
If we play 10 games within 5-6 points, I'd be happy if we went say, 7-3...as long as one of those losses ISN'T this Saturday......

In our one close game so far we made shots from the field and from the line during crunch time. I would trust most of the starters to take a last shot. No moral victories! Let's get our confidence up on the road and take it to them! Go rhody!

I think we'll see a 4 guard offense at some point this year, probably before the A10 schedule starts.

first thing out of this jerks mouth is both teams come from conferences where they need to win the conference tourney to get in. Here we go.

College teams aren't that deep any more.
The game has also changed a lot. Most teams start 3 guards. That was non-existent in 97-98.
8 players deep is plenty - maybe you want to play other bigs instead of CL.
Dan only plays CL for Hass. When KI gets in trouble it is Akelie.
You can't have your two Sr front court players get in foul trouble consistently and win. No team can withstand that.
Hass and KI need to step it up on D without the foul trouble. If they don't, this team isn't that good.
