Rhody Mentions in National Podcasts

Unread post by ATPTourFan »

In the past few days, Rhode Island has been a topic of discussion on two of the top national college basketball podcasts.

On Friday, in the final pre-season edition of the CBS Eye on College Hoops podcast, Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander discussed the unusual Top 25 placement of the Rams given last year's win-loss record and the fact they "haven't done anything" yet.

Listen starting at the 35 minute mark:

Yesterday, ESPN's Courtside w/ Katz and Coach G talked about the HUGE weekend in Mohegan coming up for Rhody, starting at the 18 minute mark. Greenberg felt URI is definitely going to be a tournament team because of the way they play defense and can score. Katz was rightfully concerned about a missed opportunity for a top 25 win over Cincy and a chance to get Duke on a neutral floor.

Gary Parrish recalls the Rhody game at Cameron Indoor where Jimmy went 8-10 from deep on the CBS College Hoops podcast.

In this week's College Hoops Today with Jon Rothstein, Cincinnati head coach Mick Cronin was the guest.

Rothstein asked about the "tough loss" against URI at Mohegan.

Cronin said he was concerned with their toughness and defense in the second half.

He also said, "that Rhode Island game was a road game, just 40 minutes from their campus just like our Butler road game."

Um, not sure about that, Mick. Are you really saying playing at historic sold out Hinkle Fieldhouse (9176 at that game) in a true road environment against a top national program is the same as playing in a neutral November game at a casino filled with Duke fans? Sure, Rhode Island had one corner of the arena stacked with fans, but everyone else was a Duke fan.

Right, and the crowd is only one part of what makes up a home court advantage, though it's pretty standard for coaches to make their schedule look as tough as possible.

Good listen. First 2 minutes are just pumping up the show and commercials so go straight to the 2 min starting point. Cronin at 7 min mark.

Cronin is calling Butler and URI road games in the same breath. URI wasn't even a home game, and there were 4 teams. When the Duke - Penn State game ended the arena went 80 percent empty. Later on a lot of Duke fans trickled back into the Arena after eating and chatting about their game. Can't blame Cronin gor pumpingbit up as a Road game but come on. It's not even like URI even travels well 35 miles away.
Can't blame Cronin but Goodman should have called shenanigans on that claim - he didn't.

Watched PC - Villanova game this weekend and it's like a 2 hour promotion of how great the Big East is. SEC is doing the same thing.
It's all about promoting one's league to help your own team and to get the max number of teams in - unfortunately the A10 can and often does suffer from this marketing barrage.

Interesting that he has this pod cast 52 weeks a year. This guy is really becoming popular on TV, twitter, radio and now podcasts in a relatively short amount of time.

In fairness, when our games are on the announcers are pumping how underrated the league is, how its one of the best non P5 leagues, etc.
It cuts both ways, you just listen more closely when they mention the team/league up north.
