Game 2: Marist
Located in the the Mid Hudson Valley, Poughkeepsie NY, is a MAAC Conference team that has had a long run of poor seasons. Their bright spot in history is the Rik Smits(Duunking Dutchman) a 7'4" player that had successful NBA career with the Indiana Pacers. Like many European players he could run the floor, hit outside shots, and play off the dribble. Lately they have struggled to draw fans, turnstile of coaches and compete in the MAAC. Their longest term Coach, Dave Magarity, was run off campus for failure to deliver to the next level. Since then, coaches go there to get canned or leave. They were a NEC team prior to the MAAC. If I recall correctly, our former AD, Ron Petro, took them from D3, playing in a high school gym, to D1. One of their local challenges, which I still think is true, is that the women's team draws more fans and is more popular and hugely more successful than the men's team, coached by a nationally known local Coach Brian Geogis, in his 15th year. He lead a local catholic high school girls teams to multiple state titles and national rankings. I also recall Dan Hurley was thinking about going there, and then thought better of that. And of course "picking you feet in Poughkeepsie", in the movie French Connection is probably what Poughkeepsie is known for.....Will Daniels, whom I think played for near by Roosevelt HS in Hyde Park was a POK product....nice walkway bridge over the Hudson River is another

They had a pretty good point guard from CT named Jared Jordan back about 10 years ago. Haven't done much since.

Re: Game 2: Marist
Duke is freaking scary...when you get freshmen playing that well right from the jump.......
If we try to take their 3 pt.game away, they have the size to dominate inside...weaknesses?
Their game against Kansas will tell more.......wish they were only playing cupcakes until they play us.....although I think Coach K won't sleep on us due to Jimmy Baron going off on them years ago....I sure he remembers that.

Re: Game 2: Marist
Let's beat Cincy first before we start talking about matching up with Duke...
How are we still overlooking them? They were picked to win the AAC and have been to to the tournament 6 straight years.

This thread is about Marist...and yet people are posting about Duke and Cincy. Interesting.

Re: Game 2: Marist
Marist are coming off a 94-49 loss to Duke at Cameron Indoor in their opening game off the year. They played 10 guys double digits in the blowout loss to Duke. Interesting that 2 of their 3 to returning scorers came of the bench against Duke. Their starters vs Duke were
G 6'2" Senior Newark, DE Khallid Hart
He is the returning top scorer from last year averaging 20.3 PPG, he had 13 points against Duke in 33 minutes
6' 4" Soph Copenhagen, Denmark David Knudsen
He averaged 4.3 PPG last year and was held scoreless against Duke in 14 minutes
6'5" Soph Clarence, NY Ryan Funk
He averaged 6.1 PPG last year and had 7 points against Duke in 21 minutes
6'4" Soph Baltimore, MD Isiah Lamb
He averaged 7.8 PPG last year and had 2 points and 5 boards against Duke in 23 minutes
6'8" Senior Bronx, NY Kentrall Brooks
He averaged 3.8 PPG last year and had 5 points and 4 boards against Duke in 10 minutes
OFF THE BENCH
6'6" Soph Reykanesbear, Iceland Kristinn Palsson
He averaged 8.7 PPG last year and had 5 points against Duke in 22 minutes
6'2" Soph Cleveland, OH Brian Parker
He averaged 15.9 PPG last year and had 5 points against Duke in 25 minutes
6'1" Soph Michigan City, IN Richie Mitchell
He had 9 points against Duke in 23 minutes
They brought a pair of 6'9" guys off the bench as well that each played 13 minutes eho combined for 3 points and 7 boards
Should be another 20 point plus win for Rhody against a young and undersized team

Re: Game 2: Marist
And Duke is still missing their top 3 freshman who are all expected to go in the top 7 or 8 of next year's draft, including 2 of the top 3.

I guess the journalism skills in Poughkeepsie are as bad as their men's basketball team. Looks like we just picked up a couple of transfers from Dartmouth

Article has been updated. Previously said that the Red Foxes would now have to contend with Rhode Island's Evan Beaudreux and Guilien Smith.

Re: Game 2: Marist
Anybody else notice people in the media like on WPRI and some articles around the internet saying,
" first time Rhode Island's been ranked since 1998..."
Without mentioning how we were ranked in 07-08?

What, do you expect local media to do research? Asking way too much here.PeterRamTime wrote:Anybody else notice people in the media like on WPRI and some articles around the internet saying,

Re: Game 2: Marist
The key stat tonight will be Marist's shooting percentage. If URI is to have a truly elite D you'd like to see it under 30.

Anyone know if the Atlantic10 APP game tonight can be streamed to the TV (Chromecast)?
