Love it. Danny loves coaching guys with chips on their shoulders.

Given the injuries its a fair place for them (EC and Hassan) to be. Only issue with first team I have is TJ Cline, nice player but not a first team talent.
I think Jarvis and Jared could have more beef for not being 3rd team.

Don't have a problem with Dayton being picked first and us second. They've been the model A10 program for the last few years, and have multiple contributors back this season.

I can see EC and or Hassan being first team over Cline, more so Hassan, just because EC missed all of last year.

100% have a problem with Jarvis and/or Terrell not being on an All Conference team, though.

Dayton fans probably have a gripe with Pollard not being on any of the all conference teams, but he too was/is injured.

Overall, I thought the picks were pretty spot on.

9-player rotation is about the most you can do. We know the first 6. Hurley says Langevine and Dowton will play; that's 8. Wonder if Thompson and Akele will see the minutes they saw last year.

TJ Cline...I hate that guy! He's got one of those super annoying "old man games" where it is so frustrating to see him perform well against your team. Definitely an intelligent and skilled player, but man is he annoying.

He hasn't done that here yet. I think he'll have some minutes to distribute because there's going to be some blowouts. But in the tough conference games the top 6 guys will all get 25-plus minutes. It's great to have depth but it's better to have stars.

I just don't get why Hurley seems so set on playing 10 guys a game. We have so many talented upperclassman yet he want's to force the younger guys into the lineup. It's great we have depth this year but just because we have depth doesn't mean we have to use it. I get using 10 guys for some of our weaker opponents that we should beat but I think when we play any of the tougher teams on our schedule it should be a 7-8 man rotation.

Hurley wants to keep the starters fresh. Rather than average 39 minutes a game he wants them to average 32. That will allow to maintain the faster, high pressure he prefers.

For A10 comparisons, look at how VCU and Dayton managed their rosters last year.

They want to get back to playing defense like they did in 14-15 and introduce some offensive elements that have only been seen in spurts and that fans have been clamoring for. They have the personnel now to play faster and with less sets. Both of those things are helped by depth. It's not like it will be an even distribution of minutes.

The bench guys, whether it's 3 or 5 of them, should have pretty defined roles. Also, because there is some diversity in abilities from the bench guys, there will be specific times when one gets the call over another. With the bigs, Berry may have more of an offensive edge, but it sounds like Langevine could be a defensive stopper if he progresses. Akele can be disruptive on defense, too. It's more than just depth for the sake of depth.

I mean, who knows? It's still October. Things could always change, but with a full roster, a coach wants everyone to feel like they have a legitimate chance to earn minutes.

It's about getting the star players to 32 minutes or less. He says production is much better at those minutes than at 38. I think he said at Wagner he had 10 players average between 11 and 31 minutes.

No one has played 38 minutes a game at URI under Hurley. Garrett, Terrell and Four played 33-35 minutes last year but that was because EC got hurt. The year before EC was the only player over 30. Hurley has done a great job keeping everyone involved on the team. This year, as I've said, I see him shortening the rotation as the season goes on because the top 6 guys are all very good.

No one averaged 39 minutes a game last year. Also no one was even in the top 10 for minutes per game in the a10. An average of 30-33 minutes for our starters would be great but there's no way you have an actual 10 man rotation if you're starters are playing that much.

Also if you go back and look at the Wagner team when Hurley had a 10 man rotation the 5 top guys in terms of minutes were 30.7, 30.4, 27.8, 24.9 and 20.9. I just can't see Hurley playing our starters those types of minutes. Our starting lineup is too good to not play them all around 30 min in my opinion.

Yikes on MP.

For conference games last year, Terrell's minutes were: 33, 38, 18, 19, 36, 35, 35, 39, 42, 37, 33, 37, 38, 37, 40, 36, 36, 39

The positives and the intensity that he brings are maximized with slightly less minutes.

Iverson and Martin have never played more than 28, mainly because of foul trouble. Even if you assume all starters average 30 minutes a game, there's still 50 minutes left to account for. My point it, I'm not stressing about how they allocate minutes. I'm excited to see how it plays out for real.

On that Wagner team, one of the top five minutes guy came off the bench, but I don't see a situation where that plays out with this roster.

Yeah - I would think Hurley is trying to avoid situations this year where he *has* to play his best players 37 to 40 minutes in games. I think Ace providing Terrell's minutes is useful. While his average was high, it didn't seem that bad. But if you look at the game-by-game, and know how Terrell plays, god, he had to have been pretty gassed in some games, but he had to play because of a lack of depth. His overall average was also kept down a tiny bit by some foul trouble games. The bench guys obviously aren't going to be as good as him, or EC, or Martin, but if they can give you 50 to 75 percent of them for 10 minutes, it would seemingly allow them to play at maximum efficiency when they are in for the other 30 minutes.

Agreed. I'm not worried about how minutes are allocated because I'm sure Hurley will play guys the minutes they deserve but I just don't think a 10 man rotation is likely. What I'm most interested in is how the minutes play out among our guards.

I think SG has it right, in that average minutes is maybe not the most instructive thing to look at. Really you don't want guys playing 37-40 minutes except on very rare occasions where circumstances require it. There is some concern guys will get worn down over the course of the season, which is what average minutes relates to, but the bigger concern is guys being gassed the last few minutes of a given game which is the result of not having the depth to spell them at different points.

Certainly EC Mathews and Hassan Martin should be 1st Team A10. But this is a preseason poll and this only serves to have these two guys drive all that harder. It will also make their teammates want to help make these two guys 1st team as well. Post season all conference is what really counts. Plus DH is aiming this team towards Top 25, A10 Conference Championship, A10 Conference Tournament Championship and post season NCAA Tournament qualification and success. Team achievements, not individual performances, will be the #1 objective.

As a reference point we can look at nbadraft.net for 2017 and 2018 projections. Don't have to agree with this mock draft site but it does serve a reference point.

Comparing A10 and Big East because they are both Basketball Centric Conferences and arguably the 2 best non P5 conferences. AAC is a good non P5 Basketball conference too.

Consider..................
2017 Mock
has 2 A10 Players: EC Mathews URI #51 and Hassan Martin URI #57
has 4 BE Players: Edmund Sumner Xavier #17, Marcus Foster Creighton #55, Trevon Bluiett Xavier #56 and Luke Fischer Marquette #59

2018 Mock
has 0 A10 Players
has 4 BE Players: Omari Spellman Villanova #28, Mikal Bridges Villanova #30, Isaac Copeland Georgetown #45 and Jessie Govan Georgetown #47

Clearly Mathews and Martin are something special. Makes little sense that they were not 1st team, but that will change by March 2017

Based on Ace's post Jared averaged 37 minutes per game for the last 14 games of the year. I think this will be reduced by at least 5-7 minutes a game meaning he will be much "fresher" the last 5 minutes of the game. This will also be true for Jarvis which will be a huge boost for our backcourt in crunch time.

Given the injuries both had in 2015-16, I don't think it's unreasonable that EC and Martin were on the second team. I think both easily have the potential to land there if they play to their potential, but if URI is as good as projected and expected, there could be plenty of options for first team. EC and Martin probably have the highest ceilings for this year, but I can envision scenarios with Garrett and Terrell also in the mix.

Yeah Dan was saying he wants to get JT down to 32 minutes s game or so.
I can see us playing around 10 a game throughout the year.
Especially because we are so good at fouling our opponent to death with our defense.
Now hopefully we don't fouls as often, but it's likely we will at least foul more than the average team. I see us having at the very least 2 bigs that will come off the bench because Kuran and Hass will need their rest and they will foul a lot.
As for the guards, Stan Robinson will be the first one off the bench and Dan said that Dowtin will be part of the rotation.
That's nine righy there. Wont be hard to play 10 a game.
Can't believe the season is so close...

I don't think it is unreasonable for Mathews and Martin to be named 2nd team given their injuries but they truly are two of the most elite, talented and high potential basketball players in the A10. They are 1st team talents even if the A10 coaches don't want to recognize it now

Watch out for Iverson who seems to be overlooked by everyone. I'm looking for him to be the surprise of the year and if he steps it up watch out! Staying out of foul trouble is the key.

Just today I have read on this board that URI is going to the Elite Eight and Kuran will average 13 and 10 this year.

What the fuck is going on with people on this board? Can we live in reality for a minute...
