Re: Dayton's Steve McElvene
Holy shit. Absolutely heartbreaking news. Enlarged heart believed to be the cause, according to some tweets.

Yeah, I saw a Twitter report that he collapsed at his family's home. Just awful.

Quote from his AAU coach.
"They wheeled him out", Howell said. "That's when I lost it, when they wheeled my big fella out."
Doesn't get much worse than this. Rest in peace steve

University of Dayton basketball player Steve McElvene died May 12, according to ESPN. He was 20.
McElvene collapsed at his home in New Haven, Indiana, according to a release from the school. An official cause of death was not immediately available.
"We are devastated at this news," Dayton coach Archie Miller said in the school's release. "Any death is a tragedy, but for someone so young, who worked so hard to have his dreams within reach, it's hard to put into words how painful this is. Our hearts and prayers go out to Steve's family. My family, our team and our staff will have to pull together, not only in support of Steve's family, but in support of each other at this terrible time."
McElvene set a single-season record for Dayton with 56 blocks last season. The 6-foot-11 center averaged over six points per game along with over five rebounds in his first full season with Dayton. He had six points and six rebounds in the Flyers' opening round loss to Syracuse in the 2016 NCAA Tournament.

Tragic. I first heard of this from Chris DiSano yesterday at the soccer field where our little ones were practicing. I can't imagine what the family is going through now.

Re: Dayton's Steve McElvene
Has it been confirmed that the cause of death was an enlarged heart? If so, there will be questions as to why it wasn't detected. It was my understanding that colleges tested big men for heart problems (Marfan Syndrome) before allowing them on the team. I was given all sorts of tests by URI doctors before being allowed on the court. Makes me wonder if Dayton could have liability issues. A high profile team like UD should've detected an enlarged heart under normal circumstances, I'm interested to see how this develops.

If you’re not, maybe consider becoming an organ and tissue donor. Make it a New Year’s Resolution.
