Best passer I've ever seen. And he did it with a flair. He knew he was out there to entertain people. And he did that better than anybody.rodfromcranston wrote:Maravich averaged 44.2 ppg for his career and

Someone went back and looked at where he shot
from in every game.
They concluded he'd have averaged 55.8 ppg for his career
if there was a 3 point line!
Until he played with the Celtics at the end, he
wasn't fortunate enough to have a cast of
players around him, as Curry has at GS.
The Hawks and the Jazz were awful to mediocre at best.
Nobody was a better passer, either.

I think Rick Mount had a similar stat re the 3 point shot.....no time to look it up but nearly all of his corner balls were 3 point distance.

The 3 Ms. Mount, Murphy and Maravich.
Mount was a spectacular shooter, but not much else.
Murphy despite his size, had a long NBA career.

And he didn't even know he was trying to make threes. If there was actually a line there to incentivize the shot, he probably would have taken and made more, and probably could have averaged over 60 ppg!rodfromcranston wrote:Maravich averaged 44.2 ppg for his career and

Re: NCAA Coaching Carousel - 2016
Thanks, Billyboy.
Maravich was simply amazing and
unique.
For a skinny kid, he seemed to thrive on contact.
I saw the game vs. Kentucky, where he scored 68 points.
He had a couple of baskets where he took two steps
inside the midcourt line an took insane set shots.
He has an array of outrageous shots, and could drive
as well as anyone.
In the NBA, he scored 68 points against Walt Frazier of
the Knicks, who was considered the best defensive
guard in the game.
His ball handling was so insane, that The Harlem Globetrotters
wanted him, as their first white player ever.
We will never see anyone like him again.

Rod,
The last time Maravich came up here I thought no it was you who recommended the book on his life.
At any rate I went to the library, and read it. It was a great read. Some sad parts to his life.nimreallynenjoyed the book. I think this link is the book I read.
You are right, we will never see another like him.

Re: NCAA Coaching Carousel - 2016
He suffered from depression and died at a very
early age.
I think one reason why we'll never see his like again is,
his father was his coach at LSU.
In this day of keeping everyone happy,
no coach would allow a star to take as many shots
as Maravich, Murphy, Walker, Jonn Neumann and the heavy scorers
back then.
For those who don't know who Neumann was he averaged 40.1 ppg
for Ole Miss 1970-71, his first varsity season, including 60 and 63 point games.
Was All American and SEC POY.
He was the first player to go hardship, and signed with the
old ABA and had a long, but not great career.
He coached the 2010 Romanian team.
Back in the 60s and 70s, every team had on 20 ppg scorer,
who the offense was set around.
URI had two 20 plus ppg guys in 1963-64,
and seven year running had a 20 point player.

Re: NCAA Coaching Carousel - 2016
Rod I love the 20 ppg player. It is important to coach the team around that player.
Good big guys should always be a threat to go for 20 in a 40 minute game if they play heavy minutes. Between finishing passes for layups, offensive rebounds, post ups, and then free throws, I think good/great big guys get the best opportunity.
As far as Pistol Pete's father? Have to think if you have one of the greatest ever to play the game that it won't be hard to coach your son?

Re: NCAA Coaching Carousel - 2016
What the 20 ppg player meant was,
the other four became complimentary to
him.
Players specialized more, too.
You had guys like Paul Silas, who was just a demon rebounder.
Guy Rodgers, who was a pass first PG.
Here we had a player like Ronnie Rothstein,
who was strictly a passing PG.
Gary Koenig, who wasn't a big scorer, but
was URI's all time rebounder when he graduated.
On teams with 20 ppg scorers, there was a next man up
deal when he graduated.
You'd look at someone and figure that was the guy
who'd carry the load next season.
Coach's word was God, and players accepted their roles,
as designated.
Not to say the coaches were always right.
Different game then.

Unbelievable court vision and ball control...Truly unbelievable. I always wondered how he would play in a more athletic, quick environment. My guess would be much less point production, but that court vision is unworldly. One of a kind!

Seriously?
The NBA wasn't a more athletic environment?
He scored 68 points vs. Knicks, over 50 points 6 times,
over 40 points THIRTY FIVE times.
NBA leading 31.1 ppg one year and 24.2 for his NBA career.
Five time NBA all star.
On NBA 50th Anniversary all time team.
Too bad he never made it after LSU.

He was very athletic himself. His hand-eye coordination was crazy. On those double pump shots of his, he seemed to hang in the air forever. I know one thing, he'd still be the player most fun to watch.

Sad for Pete that he retired in camp with the 1980-81 Celtics, who won the title that year. He could have given them 10 to 15 minutes off the bench, even in his worn out state.
Pete played in a difficult era for the NBA ...low box office, rampant drug problems, shaky TV contracts. The Pistol bio reflects a sad Maravich, with alcohol problems and depression.
Dead at 40 from a congenital heart condition.

Comments from Maker - DraftExpress
You took some visits to college campuses recently, for example Kansas. How much of a role did those play in your decision to enter the draft?
I was excited to visit Kansas, St John's and Indiana. Those three coaches all showed me different approaches to winning and developing. I was really looking forward to my visit to Arizona State and Notre Dame. My guy Brian Merrit is at ASU and I was leaning that way. I loved Coach Hurley's fire. When he got that tech early in the season, I was like ‘I want to play for this guy.'

I saw Thon Maker play in person. Maybe it's just me, but I don't like a 7 footer playing mostly out by the 3 point line. Unless he's bulked up in the last 2 years, he's going to have a tough time in the NBA. But he is very skilled.

So basically Georgia Tech put all of their eggs in the Bryce Drew basket without a legitimate backup plan (well, I hope that Josh Pastner wasn't their idea of a backup plan).
If this is the road that they decide to go down, there was really no reason for them to fire Brian Gregory.

Sandoval makes $17 million this year and next then $19 million in 2018 and 2019.
For all the talk about Basketball HC's we are talking about guys like Hurley in the $1 to 2$ million dollar range.
The signing of Sandoval for money like that was beyond belief. They should have had a weight clause or goal in it. Classic case of the guy signs a contract where the he is set for life and he basically retires to a life of laziness and eating. He is not hungry like a Xavier Munford who represents the opposite end of the spectrum from Sandoval. Can't blame Sandoval by the way as he took what these idiotic executives chose to give him. The idiots here are the executives.
Who couldn't see Sandoval's penchant for eating coming? Was that not something the data mining nerds who do all the drafting and trading metrics for the nerd execs had as an entry for their software?
$95 million for a guy who is on the bench for the next 4 years

I think most athletes are like Munford, pushed by a desire to succeed and compete. He's close to the bottom rung of pro sports and has worked hard to get there.
Pablo wqs benched in the 2010 World Series because of his weight. He's not some specimen who let himself go. The Sox knew this before signing him. He has a pro lemme he's not willing to or able to address. And $95 million gives him little incentive.

Re: NCAA Coaching Carousel - 2016
Agree with this, the front office was much more driven to build this team using the farm system. Ownership was/is driven by these flashy signings that get people talking and give them marketing opportunities. The problem with the front office's process is that building a farm system and reaping the rewards takes time, and ownership/most fans do not have the patience to sit through a rebuild. Just look at the Cubs, through basically sitting out of free agency while building up their prospect base, they put themselves in a great position to spend money in free agency to support a young core that is already generating a ton of buzz in the city.RhowdyRam02 wrote:I don't think that was a stat signing, the Sandoval move looks like the type of marketing move loved by Tom Werner.ramster wrote:Who couldn't see Sandoval's penchant for eating coming? I know this isn't even remotely related to the NCAA coaching carousel, but I dislike Red Sox ownership so much that I needed to input my opinion here.
