Student support group alumni game
Student support group alumni game
I have been watching MSU beat up on Illinois tonight. But I did want to post here their marketing gimmick for this semester break class. They pretty much had a sign up for alumni of MSU support groups, gave them student seats, and had them stand and relive the student experience. Just thought it was a different idea that could help an maybe an end zone during a game in future seasons

Not a bad idea.
I'd actually like to take it a step further. I think it would be great if URI had a basketball alumni and season ticket holder basketball tournament (mix up the teams)...OR WE could have a Keaney Blue message board basketball game at some point and make it an annual thing. I'd love that. Maybe we could use the Mackal courts one night during student winter break (they are open from 5pm - 8pm) if URI would let us or give us a pass for just one night.
Anyway, just a thought. I still play from time to time in the winter. I'm a little slower than I used to be, but it's still fun and it helps work off the holiday cheer. haha.

I'll make so many critiques about this game. FT's better be 90%.

Re: Student support group alumni game
Ground Rules
You must play zone
You cannot shoot FTs above 70%
You must run the weave
PFs should play PG and vice versa

Only certain players will be allowed to be criticized.
It will be virtually impossible to find anyone who would referee this game

I heard that 72 was lobbying to be coach. He's especially excited to teach his revolutionary free throw method.

I'm up for a FT shooting contest or a game of HORSE. But full court basketball? Nah, those days are over.

GBG can coach the offense. I expect nothing less than 1.85 O-PPP.

Re: Student support group alumni game
I think former band members should be asked to step in during semester break to cover for the students that are away. I often sit near a former band member. He leads chants and will not leave the Ryan Center until after he sings the alma mater after each game. I think he and other band members would be thrilled to be asked back.

Jim Baron to be invited back as a guest commentator. He will handle the halftime and post game interviews. He will be most interested in the "process" that each team implemented.

I don't even do half court anymore. I just shoot. Critical basketball skills like running and jumping are no longer in the repertoire.

Re: Student support group alumni game
I kinda got some of it back this summer.
I put up a basket, so my granddaughters could
learn the game.
Of course, I wound up using it more than them.
Funny how it returns after 30 years of not playing.
John Fultz told me he played pro at 53, and averaged 27 ppg.!

Well I'm 65 and I still play ( Of course the skills have eroded considerably) full court with a group of 30, 40 and 50 year olds
twice a week. I would love to play and would drive up from Nj just for the occasion. It would be fun just to meet everyone.

Those are called veteran moves. I think it was Barkley who once explained pretty hilariously the old stepping on the defenders foot move in the post. Anyway, basketball becomes the most dangerous game on the planet past 30 and why I don't play.rodfromcranston wrote:Lurker, you wouldn't want to guard me.

Re: Student support group alumni game
Yeah, some of us Band alumni tried doing this for the break games. One or two of us showed up, but its just as hard to get alumni band members back as it is actual students.RF1 wrote:I think former band members should be asked to step in during semester break to cover for the students that are away. Re: Student support group alumni game
Who could we get to help organize this?
Actually, how about the Alumni association?
This would be perfect for them. Maybe they organize it and in exchange the players pay a small entry fee that in turn goes to the basketball program?...kind of like an alumni event and small fundraiser?
Any one of you guys a big donor that would have enough clout to pitch this idea and have it taken seriously? You'd be the perfect representative to plant the seed of this idea in their heads.
Dangle that carrot. haha.
Anyway, in the meantime, on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12pm in Mackal (when URI recreation services schedule allows...check it each week) some of the URI employees (think it's the IT guys) and myself play full court during our lunch breaks. I happen to be fortunate enough to work for myself and the winter is typically slightly slower for me, so it works out for me and it helps keep the winter weight off. I know most everyone is working around that time, but just laying it out there in case some of you take time off between now and end of March (that's when I play...I assume they play all year) or incase there are some student members on here.

Re: Student support group alumni game
Ah, I might be game for that... My own schedule tends to be flexible. I'll have to re-up my membership, although I had been thinking about that for a while anyway. Rates are reasonable, if anyone else is curious: http://web.uri.edu/campusrec/membership/The Dude wrote:Anyway, in the meantime, on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12pm in Mackal (when URI recreation services schedule allows...check it each week) some of the URI employees (think it's the IT guys) and myself play full court during our lunch breaks.
