Week #5 - Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

Week # 5 begins. No A-10 teams were ranked in the top 25 in the AP poll and the USA Today poll. GW and Dayton got votes in both polls. Despite the big loss to UNC, Davidson got a handful of votes in the USA Today poll. . Among URI OOC opponents, after the UNC loss, Maryland is now #6 in AP poll and #9 in the USA Today poll. PC is ranked #15 and #18 respectively.

Cumulative record of URI OOC opponents now stands at 41-33, a winning percentage of .554.

Another so-so showing by the conference this past week and the A-10 cumulative record in OOC play now is at 72-32, .692 winning percentage.

No A-10 games on Monday night.

Only OOC game is Brown at Georgetown. 7 PM.

In other games of interest:

#9 Villanova plays #7 Oklahoma in the Pearl Harbor Classic in Hawaii. 7 PM. ON FS1

In addition to having 5 teams in the top 16 in the country, Oklahoma's spanking of Villanova in the Pearl Harbor Classic, 76-55, is just further evidence that the Big 12 is the best basketball conference in the country. This was the first ranked team that Villanova had played in its relatively puny OOC schedule.

* Georgetown routed Brown, 74-57.

Oklahoma is very impressive on both ends of the floor, while Nova had a very tough shooting night (4-32) from 3. Many of Nova's missed 3's were wide open however, I'm not seeing Nova as a dangerous team, they'll win alot of games in a weak conference but will likely have another early exit after getting an undeserved high seed.

I hate to say it, but PC will be right up there league-wise this season.

Xavier looks like a juggernaught, with PC right behind them.....

32 attempts from 3 pt. land? That's weak.....

Buffalo is managing to hang with Iowa State (at least for now), and it's one of the best things I have seen all season. I can't even imagine doing what Nate Oats is doing this season.

Damn Duke and Iowa State back-to-back on the schedule!? Impossible not to be pulling for Nate Oats in every way possible these days.

Besides URI entertaining Houston, Tuesday action looks like this in the A-10:

* UMBC at Duquesne. 7 PM. After a demoralizing loss to Pitt, the Dukes get a breather.

* Northern Iowa at George Mason. 7 PM. UNI was big loser to Richmond on Saturday, so it will beinteresting to see how they rebound versus GMU.

* Penn State at GW. 7 PM. GW should easily win this one.

* Princeton at Saint Joseph's. 7 PM.

* Vermont at St. Bonaventure. 7 PM. Vermont has lost every game it has played against teams in high level conferences. The outcome in Olean should be no different.

* UMass at UCF. 7 PM. On ESPN3. The Minutemen's OOC schedule has only a few true road games. This is one of them and most likely the strongest road test yet.

* LIU Brooklyn at Fordham. 7 PM. Great start for Fordham, but their OOC is weak and this game will be their seventh home game in a row. Their only true road game to date was a loss and their next one won't come until January when they travel to play GW.

In action involving URI OOC opponents:

* Wagner at Rider. 7 PM. Up and down season so far for Tulsa. Best win was over Wichita State on their home court.

* Iona at Tulsa. 9 PM. On ESPN3.

* UConn versus #6 Maryland in the Jimmy V Classic at MSG. 9:30 PM. On ESPN. A win here for the Huskies will get them back into the rankings.

* TCU at Washington. 11 PM. On PAC12.

I think our opponents can legitimately go close to 11-0 tonight with a shot to pick up some decent wins along the way.

Both toughies, for sure. I thought TCU looked good against SMU and not sure how good UW is, but that is a true true road game traveling to Seattle. Still, I'd take 9-2 with an outside shot at 10-1 or 11-0, combined with a Rhody win.

We are due to have a night where something breaks our way.

UMass and George Mason go down in the A10 tonight. Everyone else (Duquesne, GW, St. Joes, Bonnies and Fordham, in addition to Rhody) all win.

Rider trailed at half and led for much of the second, but fell to Wagner on a last-second dunk by Dwaun Anderson.

Iona trails Tulsa by a dozen at half.

Maryland leads UConn early.

TCU later.

We played Maryland tougher than UConn is. Geesh.

Iona getting boat raced by Tulsa. Iona will be 3-3 after this game with none of the six games having been decided by less than 15 points. Weird.

I highly recommend watching that Dwaun Anderson put back slam if you get the chance.

Aaman had a solid game for Wagner. He was moved out of the starting line-up a few games ago

First off, Ace....wow. What a finish.

Also, TCU currently down 34 to Washington right now at half. I think it's safe to go to bed on that one.

UW is shooting at least twice as well as TCU from the floor, from three and from the line, and TCU is getting KILLED in the rebounding and turnover battles. That is not a good recipe for success.

Dwaun Anderson is an amazing athlete- look at where he is when that shot goes up! I wish Dan would have had the chance to coach him in game play, not just the year he had to sit out.

A-10 went 6-2 on the evening with the two losses being:

* UMass fell to UCF. The Minutemen fell behind by double digits in the first half, but rallied to take the lead late in game, but a lay-uo by UCF with 3 seconds in game sealed the UMass fate, 67-63.

* George Mason made a gallant effort against Northern Iowa whose resume includes a win over UNC. GMU behind most of the game, often by double digits, rallied in second half and got the deficit down to 3, but could not get any closer than that in a 73-65 loss.

URI OOC opponents went 1-3 on the night. Iona and TCU were routed, Rider lost a heartbreaker and Maryland outlasted UConn in the Jimmy V Classic.

In Wednesday night action, in the A-10:

* Big game for Dayton as they travel to Nashville to take on #21 Vanderbilt. 9 PM. On ESPNU.

* E. Washington at Davidson. Part of the Gotham Classic. 8:30 PM.

In the OOC:

* BC at PC in the Norovirus Classic. 7 PM.

* Valparaiso at Indiana State 7 PM. On ESPN3.

* Holy Cross at #2 Kansas 8 PM. On ESPN3.

* In an intrastate battle, Nebraska plays at Creighton. 8 PM. On CBS Sports.

Dunn apparently left the game tonight due to sickness, not expected to return. Ironic that they're facing Norovirus College tonight. Also, Bentil turned an ankle and is out as well. Probably a pretty even game now with PC having to go to their bench for the rest of the evening.

Just our freaking luck.....the entire PC team could end up sick from this...

Of course, if this had happened before we played them, we would have won, but then we might have gotten sick after too.....

It was originally built as a combination gymnasium and concert hall. That is the reason that some seats are lower than the court.

I think the middle section in this photo may have been the stage.

Haha oh man just watched that Cooley clip. What a tool. At least our coach doesn't throw temper tantrums like a little two year-old when a call goes against him. At least Hurley's temper tantrums are more befitting a grown adult.

On a related note, how in the hell is that not called a technical foul on Cooley?

Here's a barometer. Go to the PC board and see if there is a mention about Cooley's fall down act. If there is none or it is trivialized as a real fall then you have a confirmation of my opinion of that entire school from top to bottom - HYPOCRISY!
