If Gronk sees that last play without a push off call, he'll put his good leg through the screen.

The real shame of this game and with the exception of last years
Nebraska game is,
EVERY time we've had a nice crowd in the last few years, we've lost.
This has happened with PC, Davidson, VCU, UMass,
and I'm sure I'm forgetting some.
You get the sense those people would come back for more, but instead,
leave in disappointment.
It just happens over and over again.
We get close in all these games, have a lead in every one,
and fail to close the deal, for any number of reasons.
Play well enough to win, but always lose at the end.
We will never have big crowds consistently, until we start winning these
big games at home.

By the way there are some PC fans who think the foul on that last play actually should have been on Garrett. Just in case you needed a good laugh this morning.

Arguably our toughest home game of the season Tuesday night.... Could be a classic barnburner.

Hopefully our students come back in force.

In other words Rod I hope you are wrong, history tells us you are likely correct.

Can our students walk down the hill to watch a high level free basketball game?

Hearing there was a massive brawl at about 1230 AM over at the muse involving URI and PC fans but haven't been able to confirm that 2nd part. Awful if true and I hope that's not the case.

I was driving through campus when I was leaving. I had to turn around as students were frantically waving cars to turn around on Butterfield Rd. near the bottom of the elephant walk. There was already an ambulance there with some other emergency vehicles on their way. I was wondering what happened there. I wouldn't imagine there would be any PC fans on that part of the campus. Does anybody know what was going on there?

wouldnt surprise me, there were a lot of the typical knuckledragging PC fans there. The type whose only time on a campus was after making a wrong turn

Looks like many took their cue from their coach and players as several PC fans were none too gracious after the game outside the Ryan Center. Were making all sorts of noise and lording it up. I guess they must do this after every game since playing URI is no big deal to them. Can't say I am surprised if there were issues.

I encountered a nut driving an SUV with out of state plates on Slocum/Indian Corner Road. They didn't seem to like that there was a near constant line of cars going only the speed limit. They continuously crossed the double line (which means no passing) passing multiple cars each time and then jumping back into the right lane when there was oncoming traffic. I have never seen anything like it. Extremely aggressive driving which made me think the operator was likely drunk.

Captain Obvious but only way to shut friartown up is to win.

MFY fans around my parts are mighty quiet and gonna get even quieter when loser sawx nation leaves em 20 games back in 2016....Hearing them whine about how Price can't pitch in postseason this past week has been classic.

I want the same feeling about my Rams hoops, here is hoping this is October 2003 and soon we suffer no more!

No way I will ever put a positive spin on losing to providence .....

When I told Dan the night before the PC game last year,
"Win this game and everything changes", he looked
at me like,"What is this guy babbling about?"
Fact is, the perceptions in the entire state tilt on this game.
Not for the diehards of each fanbase, but the casual-fringe fans
that Dan and company want to get into the seats at the RC.
There have been three distinct times where URI was poised to
finally become the state school in the minds of those fans.
Each time, we found a way to fritter it away.
Now, with Dan, he's had the last two PC games at the RC
come down to the last shot.
Both losses.
For the reasons of building a real fanbase beyond those of us who
will be there, regardless of wins or losses,
yes, the PC game means more to us than it does to them.
It's like the Sox finally beating the Yankees and then continuing
to do so.
That's when the casual fringe fans begin to believe and invest in
the program.
Until then, we'll remain the also ran in our own state.
Sad, but true.

Btw, who picked the barbershop quartet to sing the national anthem? They were putting the fans to sleep. It was so slow and quiet the students took over singing it near the end.

Great job by ezbuckets last night. The rest of the marketing/promo was not where it should be. Where has Thorr been?

Yeah, I don't get it. I have no idea why many PC fans think this is our biggest game of the year. Maybe when we played twice a year when in the same conference it was huge, but no where near as much in my opinion. I can see in the old Big East were it might mean more for PC to beat Syracuse, UConn, and Georgetown than URI. The same Logic would apply to us over Temple and UMass in the A10 in their hayday. But honestly, now, while it is one of the bigger games before Christmas each year, I've long forgotten about the PC game by mid December. The A10 schedule combined with the entire OOS record defines the season for me. Putting it another way, for the 2014-15 season, the Dayton/VCU/Davidson games defined our season. Not the PC game. We win the PC game, we still probably don't dance. But if we had won 1 or 2 of that Dayton/VCU/Davidson stretch, we probably dance. If that doesn't define a season I don't know what does. To me, this was the biggest game on December 5th, 2015 and now, "we're on to Houston."

Smarty, I'll defend you any day on Twitter! I got your back!

rodfromcranston wrote:My take after letting this sink in.
First off, stop with the EC=NBA player.
He's got miles to go before that could happen.
Let's not pretend we lost Steph Curry.
In THIS game the backcourt was terrific.
Best I've ever seen Jarvis Garrett play.
This was the player PMurph raved about, years ago.
Terrell shook off a tough start and also looked like
the player we expected to see since he signed.
Martin was Martin.
As happens, Bentil was too long for him at times.
Plus he had to switch off and guard Bullock, who
had a good second half.
Iverson contributed in the second half with his 7 points.
He also guarded Dunn at one point, forcing a turnover.
Listened to Rooke and Hassett on the way home, to get
a different perspective.
Hassett said Garrett was the first guy this year to make Dunn really work on
defense.
Garrett beat him continually to the basket.
I'm liking Thompson more and more.
With Four shut out, and not a great defensive player,
I would like to have seen more of Thompson.
He too did a good job of keeping Dunn from going crazy.
What it came down to was, we missed 7 of our last 10 shots.
Also, two plays went right to Bentil for baskets in the last minute.
The first one looked like it was going to be a turnover.
Crowd could not have been better.
Good to see Sly, Tyson, Phil Kydd, TBell and others there.
Only a win would have made it better.
Great game. Team looks like a team that can play.
Need to just continue at tonight's level to have a
nice season.
+1,000,000

use this as motivation to improve. While it's weird, I feel better about the loss last night than I do about the win over Holy Cross.

Agree with most post especially on the positives.
Some other points:
PC shot 67% in the 2nd half and scored 46 points in the paint for the game.
Rhody didn't play good D and PC is a good offensive team.
Hass had trouble with Bentil and Bullock underneath on D.
Bentil, Bullock and Lomomba were 19-27 (70%) almost all 19 in the paint. They slso were 11-11 FT.
I think Bentil was too quick for Earl underneath. He went by him down low twice in the 2nd half.
Rhody struggles offensively when Garrett is out. JT and Four aren't PGs.
Best games of their careers for Garrett and JT.
Best offensive game by Rhody in a long time 45%/33%/69%
Too many PC fans in our section - I hate that
I wish Rhody went after Bentil and Bullock more to start 2nd half to get them in foul trouble even if we didn't score. Rhody dominated when they were out in the first half
Plays that hurt the most
1) The turnover on outbounds play leading to dunk by Dunn. No pick set just throw it back deep
2) Lucky deflection on potential steal that led to Bentil dunk - almost 10 secs/almost back court/almost steal.

These two plays in the final 2 mins sunk our ship Both went for easy baskets. Number 1 above was bound to happen. We toss the ball 80% time on inbounds to that back player. Number ,2 is another story. Two could be TO's on travel and backcourt then Earl almost gets the tip towards the PC basket could have changed how the clock went and possessions. We have had plenty of unbelievable wins too at the RyanCtr. I have been fortunate to see all if them. Great basketball game start to finish

(sarcasm tag) Makes perfect sense. How dare a lowly URI player try to box out on a rebound. His body contacted the Friar's elbow used to push him out of the way of the rebound - it should be a foul on him (/sarcasm tag)

Honestly, your good fans get overlooked because of the casual, lousy ones. There is a lot of anger and hate about PC out there, I think many times people confuse that for "biggest game of the year." Always a sell out, different air in the building. Perhaps there are "F VCU" chants an hour before tip off that PC fans don't know about. Maybe people are chucking promotional items at the visitors bench and fans for other games. Maybe your fans shush fans of other visiting teams when they visit. Or maybe they don't. I don't really know, I don't think one game defines a season especially this early. But I think that's the reason behind the negative stigma of "Super Bowl."

Thanks for showing some Rhody fans. Clearly generalizing, but this is the second straight game down there I've watched students hurl things at the fans behind the bench or at the bench, multiple times throughout the game. Great feeling in the world hearing that place hush down, and loved seeing the team calling for more noise as they walked off the court. That's the swag that helps them win games like this.
Was it class that the PC players exhibited leaving the court when they initiated interaction with the crowd? It seemed to me that they were trying to incite things. Was it class that many PC fans exhibited in the parking lots after the game? Is that how PC players and fans act after wins against teams such as Butler? Seems to me the URI game is much more meaningful to PC than most.

Also, spare me the no class bit. It cuts both ways. PC fans at the DDC do not exactly have a reputation for being pious. At least no one at the Ryan Center is crass enough to throw sex toys onto the court.

Thanks for the props, guys. I was/am sick with an awful cold but the energy in that place gave me life. Just hope that the kids and fans keep coming to give us that extra edge.

As far as the game; I'm as sick of "moral victories" as most of you, but I can't help but be optimistic about the rest of the season with the way our guys played on the big stage last night. If Jared & Jarvis maintain that level of play, Christion keeps gaining confidence & Hass/Earl/Kuran are able to limit points in the paint, I still like our chances to battle at the top of the A10.

If they play the way they did last night again and more consistently throughout, we definitely have a shot at being at the top of the conference.

Possibly, I have no idea. Living north of Boston I typically get to 5 or 6 games a year. I don't have the experience to say what every game is like. (Ironically I wasn't able to make last night, so I can't speak to any chant from yesterday). In the past there have been plenty of obnoxious chants by fans of both schools for this game in particular, probably casual fans that don't really care much of either program outside this one game a year, so you might have something there.

But I'll say this, any fan of any team that would rather see his/her team win that one game over what they think is their most hated rival over winning their conference and/or getting to the dance isn't a real fan of their team.

LOL PC won on a buzzer beater. Did you not expect people to be excited? It was a close game, and after being insulted all game, sure it was a little more fun leaving the arena. People would act like that for any buzzer beater against a good team. A little extra last night.

And who cares that the team did coming off the court? After being told they sucked and had things thrown at them all night, they had some fun coming off the court. Unless they were hurling derogatory statements at URI fans and students, who cares? It's that swag which helps them win games, you could tell they were amused by it all night.

Didn't hear any URI fans talking about Iverson getting in Dunn's face after a missed shot he probably should have been T'd up for. Teams want players with that type of swag to not back down from anyone.

I am as devastated as everyone else with this loss, but I will say if the team plays the way they did and Four is not inert we are an NCAA team, no doubt. Of course Garrett and Terrell are the keys in my mind. Iverson is gravy.

PC fans are pompous asses.. Superfly read the drivel on your forum.. I have been to many PC URI games at the dump where your fans whine and cry when they aren't killing us.. Chants of safety school.. Maybe a better education at a fraction of the cost at the state school...Your place is like a morgue most of the time... I heard numerous PC fans mouthing off last night.. Don't condone the few URI kids actions that are regrettable, but you clowns and your coach are no saints (halfway out on the court one play) need to get off your high horse.. Sick of losing to you clowns

I honestly would love to see this happen again (This was done a few times way back when I was a freshman in the late 80s). For the announcing of the visiting team, have the entire audience stand up and turn around with backs to the court and not utter a sound. Either that or stand up (or sit) holding up a newspaper, pretending to read, again, without a sound. Make it seem like we don't care who our opponent is.

As for the above pissing contest over who has the most classless fan base? We both have our share of a-holes...let it go, no one is going to win that argument.

Read the PC board if you want to see no class. There were plenty of derogatory comments directed at URI, the institution, and the Rhody hoops program before the game even took place. Rjsuperfly66 must be blind if he can't see that. Perhaps he can come up with more excuses when this is pointed out to him.

Are you kidding me? Your coach is on the floor every single play. Watch the first half, PC is running an offense and Hurley is very visibly standing on the court on nearly every possession. Here's a link:

That made me laugh, because I'm pretty sure the one time Cooley was "halfway on the court," he was yelling at his own guys and the play was going the other way, URI was bringing the ball up the court. It made me laugh because the crowd got irate, but it's like, look at your own bench.

You'll find I don't condone much of what is said regarding URI (most of it is ignorant). But things constantly being hurled at fans and the team is over the line to me, especially at the end of the game when it began to rain behind the bench. Message board talk or stupid chants, who gives a crap? Difference between trash talk and physical action.

Been reading the scout forum a bit today.

Decided to take my well deserved lumps as a Rhody fan/alum.

Superfly in fairness is one of the better posters over there IMHO. Even though we hate them friartown is a paying guest in our building = threats of violence are classless.

As for the pc scout forum crowing - well?

Win the game or take the pain.

Ouch!

Just remember this next year. I will personally make it a point to be as obnoxious as possible walking out of your building before heading to some watering holes near your campus to troll people unhappy with the way the game ended.

Some genius posted this on the pc board...
This is basically my entire mentions section on Twitter. It's weird how much they tweet about a game that they say matters so much to us and not them. One of life's mysteries I guess.
Putting it another way, for the 2014-15 season, the Dayt/VCU/Davidson games defined our season.

As the turnout reflected, it was definitely our biggest game of the season to date, but getting to the NCAAs is will be based on how we fare during the A10 regular season and tournament. This was just one game, in a season that will run for several more months.

The team showed me a lot. Hopefully, it will spill over into the next game and beyond.

You guys win a close game at the buzzer, go for it.

I don't support blatant trolling, but in the immediate aftermath of a close game, go for it.

In bars afterwards, that I think is silly.

On a breakaway Christion scored and was fouled. Refs said foul was before the shot.
Hurley was calling for breakaway foul, I agreed.
Very tough break in what would have been a 3 point play resulted instead taking ball out of bounds. Anyone see this differently?

Martin with a clutch rebound off a Terrell shot in last minute I mediated spotted Terrell with a good pass and Terrell buried the clutch shot. But no assist for Martin. I thought it was great court awareness and a very important pass - but no assist? What am I missing?

I would just like to say two things regarding your precious fans.

1). A couple who arrived late, decided that they wanted to annoy those around them by standing up and trying to initiate confrontation. They refused to sit down and verbally tussled with several people around them, and the female was threatening an older URI fan. The male had a PC shirt on and she had a Rhody Rukus shirt on. The way they were acting I don't believe she was a URI student. Security eventually escorted them out of the building a short time later.

2). While my wife and I were leaving 2 separate groups of young men with PC garb on were yelling obscenities about URI in front of couples and children. A sample was "Fuck URI, I hope this shit hole burns down." Being happy about the win is great, but deliberately yelling and making an asshole out of yourself is something I've heard only from PC and UMASS fans leaving the Ryan.

Let's face it there are obnoxious fans on both sides. I've been a fan for over 50 years, and had season tickets when we played at the Civic Center, and I can say that there has always been BS, and there always will be, but those two instances stuck in my craw.
