Game 8: Providence College (Saturday, Dec 5, 7:00pm ESPNU)

Unread post by HASwatTeam »

Don't worry about the crowd. Just wait until Four hits his first 3 on Saturday and the RC erupts. Terrell feeds off energy more than ANYONE on this team. He wont shoot lights out saturday, but he WILL improve. It's about time we look at the glass half fucking full. Our OOC peak could be coming this Saturday against PC. They are the #23 team, need reminding that is ONE ranking below the #22 that Nebraska had last year and that was the best atmosphere in years. Now we have out biggest RIVAL and they are ranked.

Done with this board being down in the dumps, the majority of our team can't even legally drink a beer, cut them a brake.

Native Preview wrote:It is that time of year again. Rhode Island may be the smallest state in the union, but it's big on college basketball, especially when it comes to the URI-PC game.

The PC-URI game, the 128th time that Rhode Island and Providence will face off on the hardwood, has been sold out for some time, so, if you are going to the game, plan to arrive early to avoid traffic and parking delays.

If you don't already have tickets, you can still catch the action on ESPNU (Cox channel 1134). Or listen in on the Radio: B101 (101.5 FM) with Steve McDonald and Don Kaull.

Tip off is 7:00 p.m. at the Ryan Center.

So who is this small Catholic college from the Capital City that's coming to Kingston on Saturday to play the Rams?

Providence College is a private, Roman Catholic college located about two miles west of downtown Providence.

The home court for PC men's basketball is the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Located in downtown Providence, it opened in 1972, and was known as the Providence Civic Center until 2001. The Dunk, as it is colloquially known, will be the venue of next year's PC-URI game.

The PC athletic teams are known as the Friars, a reference to the Dominican Blackfriars that founded and continue to run the institution. The Friars, after having spent the first six decades of their athletic existence as an independent, joined the Big East in its inaugural season, 1979–80, and has been a member of the Big East ever since.

From the perspective of most of the other teams in the Big East, Providence College is a small Catholic liberal arts college that plays its home basketball games in a dumpy arena that lacks a college atmosphere and that isn't even located on the PC campus.

However, from the perspective of many Rhode Islanders, Providence College is a storied program deeply tied to the identity of their home state. For many families in Rhode Island, there has been a multi-generational love affair between the smallest state in the union and the small Catholic liberal arts college in the capital city. For many of these folks, although URI may be the state’s school, the Friars are the state’s team.

For some of the Friar faithful, the infatuation may have started with listening to Chris Clark on the radio. For others, it may have started gathered around the family television, or perhaps even with a big-time basketball game in the iconic Civic Center with the blare of "When the Saints come Marchin' in" playing in the background.

In fairness to those smitten with Friars' basketball, Providence College back in the day was always able to deliver on roundball thrills and chills.

Back in the '60s the Friars had the nation's third-best record, behind UCLA and Kentucky. The school had stars like future Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkens and No. 1 draft pick Jimmy Walker, and before them were the legendary Vinnie Ernst, Johnny Egan, and Jimmy Hadnot.

In the '70s, PC with two local kids made it all the way to the Final Four, only to have Marvin Barnes' right knee blow out, early in that heart-wrenching loss to Memphis State 98-85.

The '87 Providence team, coached by Rick Pitino and quarterbacked by Billy Donovan, made it back to the Final Four, and in '97 the Friars fought their way to the Elite Eight before losing in overtime to eventual national champ Arizona.

But that was then and this is now. Nostalgia only takes you so far. Even in Friartown.

The current Providence College team is coached by Ed Cooley, who has been the head coach of the Friars since the 2011–12 season. Coach Cooley is a native son of the Ocean State, having grown up on the mean streets of South Providence. Cooley played basketball for Central High School, twice earning Rhode Island Player of the Year honors. After graduating from Central in 1988, Cooley did a a post-graduate year at New Hampton School in New Hampshire, and then went on to Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts, where he was a three-year team captain. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in history from Stonehill in 1994.

Cooley began his coaching career at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, spending the 1994–1995 season as an assistant men's basketball coach before returning to Stonehill as an assistant coach in 1995–1996. In 1996, Cooley joined Al Skinner's staff as an assistant coach for URI, before following Skinner to Boston College in 1997.

In 2006, after nine seasons as an assistant at BC, Cooley finally got his first head coaching position, in Connecticut of all places, at Fairfield University of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Over the course of Cooley's five seasons at Fairfield, Cooley's teams posted a 92–69 overall record and 58–32 conference record.

Immediately before his 2011 hiring by the PC administration, Ed Cooley had been awarded MAAC Men's Basketball Coach of the Year honors, for having taken an over-achieving Fairfield team to the NIT tournament. The conventional wisdom at the time of his hiring was that not only was Cooley a local Providence guy but he also would be able to perform similar-to-Fairfield miracles for the Friars, who had just suffered through the ill-fated Keno Davis regime (which included not only a series of losing seasons but also such off-court antics as Johnnie Lacy and James Still being dismissed from PC for their involvement in an assault on a fellow student; leading scorer and rebounder Greedy Peterson leaving school following a dorm room escapade that also involved two recruits; and key recruit Joseph Young begging out of his letter of intent).

For the most part, Cooley has delivered on expectations. Especially against in-state rival, the University of Rhode Island.

Most recently, in the game played last year at the Dunkin Donut Center, the Rams lost 68-60 to the Providence College Friars. Providence led by 10 with just over two minutes to play before the Rams made it a one possession game with 44 seconds left, thanks to sloppy ball handling by PC. In the end, Providence had enough to hold on, with Kris Dunn and Kyron Cartwright sealing it at the free throw line.

PC ended last year's 2014-2015 season with a 22-12 record overall, 11-7 in Big East play.

Gone from last year's squad are leading scorer LaDontae Henton and starting center Carson Desrosiers (both of whom graduated), as well as talented underclassmen Tyler Harris and Paschal Chukwu (both of whom unexpectedly transferred).

So far this 2015-2016 season, a very young PC squad is 7-1.

Code: Select all

     11/18/15 vs. Illinois W, 60-59
     11/21/15 vs. Brown W, 94-73
     11/20/15 vs. NJIT W, 83-76
     11/23/15 vs. Evansville W, 74-64 (Anaheim, California)
     11/24/15 vs. Arizona W, 69-65 (Anaheim, California)
11/29/15 vs. Michigan State L, 77-64 (Anaheim, California)
     12/01/15 vs. Hartford W, 89-66
[/b]
The game Saturday in the Ryan Center will be the Friars' first true "away game" this season.

PC's only loss to date this season was in Anaheim to perennial Big-10 heavyweight Michigan State, currently ranked #3. The Friars themselves are currently ranked #23.

The PC M-BB roster of eligible players (and likely starters against URI) is as follows:
  • Kyron Cartwright (6-0 185) Sophomore Guard from Compton, California.
  • Tyree Chambers (6-2 182) Sophomore Guard from Bayreuth, Germany
  • Casey Woodring (6-2 185) Junior Guard from Darien, Conn./Cushing Academy
  • Drew Edwards (6-3 185) Freshman Guard from Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall
  • Kris Dunn (6-4 220) Junior Guard from New London. Dunn, a huge point guard, both in size and in talent, is having an impressive season, which is what one would expect from a National Player of the Year candidate. Dominating opponents on both ends of the floor, he is averaging 19 points, 6 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 3.7 steals per game,
  • Ricky Council (6-5 200) Freshman Guard from Durham, North Carolina../Moravian Prep
  • Junior Lomomba (6-5 205) Junior Guard from Montreal.
  • Tom Planek (6-6 205) Sophomore Forward from Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick High School
  • Isaiah Jackson (6-6 212) SophomoreGuard from Gainesville, Fla./Villages Charter School
  • Jalen Lindsey (6-7 210) Sophomore Guard from Murfreesboro, Tenn. Sixth man in Cooley's rotation, he is averaging 6 points and 2 rebounds per game. Against Hartford on Wednesday, Lindsey canned four 3-pointers, three in a row during a key first half stretch, and finished with 15 points and 8 rebounds.
  • Ryan Fazekas (6-8 205) Freshman Guard from Chesterton, Indiana. Just a freshman, but he is shooting 43 percent from three.
  • Rodney Bullock (6-8 225) Redshirt Sophomore Forward from Hampton, Virginia. After sitting out his freshman year as a punishment, and taking a medical red-shirt year last year as a sophomore, Rodney is contributing this year, providing supplemental scoring and rebounding.
  • Quadree Smith (6-8 285) Freshman Forward from Temple Hills, Maryland.
  • Ben Bentil (6-9 235) Sophomore Center from Wilmington, Delaware, where he prepped at St. Andrew's. Originally from Ghana, Bentil is the number two weapon for the Friars. He plays the type of versatile inside-out offensive game that is a perfect complement to Kris Dunn. Bentil went for 21 points in the Friars' upset of Arizona on Friday, then finished with 20 points and 7 rebounds against Michigan State on Sunday. On Wednesday against Hartford, he had 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting.
____

Look -- all cheap shots at PeeCee aside, this will be an up-hill battle for Rhody, which since the Maryland game has not consistently played with high energy. Led by All-American candidate Kris Dunn, the Friars are currently playing extremely well, while the Rams themselves are apparently still coming together after the heart-breaking start-of-the-season loss of their leader, E.C. Matthews. Given that Saturday's contest is a rivalry game against a nationally ranked in-state opponent, it will take far more than merely a "good" performance by Hurley's boys to get Rhody the win, even with the home court advantage. Let's hope that everyone associated with Rhody brings their "A" game Saturday.

I gotta say, those are some pretty ballsy quotes.
Excerpt from Kevin McNamara piece in the Providence Journal
PC coach Ed Cooley didn't flinch. In fact, he took the opportunity to fan the flames of what he said “isn’t a rivalry” game against the Rhode Island Rams. He also said that while the game should be played every season, it should always come at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center as it was for many years before the Ryan Center was built.

“We’re excited to play the game,” Cooley said. “I don’t want anybody to think we’re not. We’re as hungry and determined as anybody in the country. We’re going to go down there and do the best we can and we hope we win by one point. We’re playing a very good team on their home court and they play well at home. I’m pretty sure everyone will be excited. There will be a lot of tickets sold and a lot of tickets scalped. But to me that’s still a game that should be played right here at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. That’s just my opinion.”

Cooley went out of his way to praise the Rams and coach Dan Hurley but he seemed to feel there wasn’t a need to play in Kingston. When asked about the raucous sellout Ryan Center crowd, he quickly answered “the best atmosphere in this state is at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. We’re excited to go down there and play. It’s a road game but the best atmosphere in this state lives at The Dunk.”

Providence has won five straight games against URI with Cooley owning a perfect 4-0 record as the Friars’ coach. He knows protecting that record will not be easy.

“It’s going to be tough. They are very good and very solid, very well-coached. We’re going to have our hands full. I’m pretty sure there will be a lot of happy fans down there to see us,” Cooley said. “But it’s business. I think our wonderful state makes more of it than it is. It’s another game that is good for our fans. I look at it as business. Everybody else can call it a rivalry or whatever you want. It’s a game to me, not a rivalry.”

Cooley can shove his opinion up his formerly fat a$$. It is not fair to have the game always on one team's homecourt. Is it asking too much for PC to play one game every other year vs a RI team on a court other than the DDC? They play Brown and Bryant most years and it is almost never away (save for one game at Brown that Cooley's Friars lost). As for it not a rivalry game, he is kidding no one. He gets up for this game more than most others and certainly understands its importance better than previous PC coaches having grown up here and once been on the URI staff. It is one of the reasons his teams (unlike those under Welsh and Davis) bring it to the Ryan Center. How many other teams has Ed almost gone to the mat with its coach? I can only assume his words are to tweek URI and its fans. It pisses me off when he says stuff like this. With his home ownership experience in mind (fire that displaced his family), he should know better not to fan the flames. They can get out of your control and you can get burned.

Cooley is a good coach, but he has some Kanye West in him, in that he pops off and says stupid things and also is not above losing his cool acting like a spaz in public - such as trying to fight Dan during the game and sealing the Friars defeat against Dayton last year by first wigging out and throwing a chair and then compounding it by forgetting to coach the game afterwards in his hysteria over the technical foul called on him. Whatever. Let's just send him home with an L so we don't have to listen to him yap.

Didn't he say the same thing last time they played here? I don't think its that big of a deal, it's just dumb. Yeah I think we should play all of our games at home to, sure would be nice!

If we want to stop hearing this bombast from Cooley, we have to win. Then it will be PC's call to cancel the series. They don't have the balls to do that.

Weak of McNamara for not asking for a follow-up of Coach Cooley. A simple "why shouldn't it be played as a home and home, Ed?". When someone throws out a bomb like that, you ask them to explain it and you get even better content for your post-game journal. Instead, it leaves us to wonder why Ed thinks the way he does. I'm sure he does have a mix of good and dumb reasons of his opinion, but I think a lot of it is pumping up PC to artificial levels.

Seriously, do they just do anything Ed wants up there?

+1

The State paid millions for that glorified paint job they called a "renovation"

I can guarantee you Cooley didn't feel that way when he was an assistant here. I'm sure he didn't want to have to play "home" games on the road, and I think they were doing a few at the dunk back then. What a joke. It's hubris and arrogance for Cooley to think they shouldn't have to travel to Kingston. If PC ever tries to bring it back to all games being in the Dunk, I hope we balk. I never want to play another home game there again.

The follow-up wasn't in the press release handed out by Pee-C so Li'l Kevie wouldn't think of it on his own. I'm surprised Pee-C would approve that much before allowing Li'l Kevie to file his story.

No sense getting riled up, though I did when I first saw the comments. He's just pandering to his base. We all know the facts. PC is a mid major now just like us and aren't big enough to dictate terms like Cooley is stating. The Dump is too big for this game based on all the empty seats last year and because it's a hockey arena it's a terrible venue to watch a basketball game. And we all know the atmosphere sucks there. It was quiet last year until URI went on a run in the second half. PC fans only made noise when PC beat back our comeback attempt.

If there was a true neutral venue in the state I wouldn't mind playing the game there every year with half the ticket allotment going to each school. The Dump isn't that venue and so as stevie said above me, I would cancel the series before I played every game at PC.

Although maybe we should offer Cooley the opposite offer. Seeing as this is the biggest college basketball game in the state, it should be played every year at the state flagship university instead of at the tiny private college. The Ryan Center is the most beautiful basketball venue in the state, and because it's built for basketball and not hockey, it's by far the best venue in the state to hold the game. And sellouts are good for atmosphere, so the game should be played every year at the venue that's sure to sell out, unlike the cavern in Providence.

Hope the "Quahog Cup" doesn't get much traction cause that woul be most likely a Dunk event.....playing down for games with Bryant and Brown in such an event is not in the best interest of URI.....such is life these days in the world in out of conference scheduling and the the separate journey in the conferences......play PC once, alternating sites or not at all.....

Regardless of what defense they play, the capability of Dunn to steal, deflect, disrupt for run outs for easy points concerns me......gotta keep it close early, whomever is not guarded by Dunn has got to have a good nite.....as usual in this game, it will be interesting to see how the bench players react to the pressure of this game....

Nothing surprising in Cooley's remarks, it's in the PC DNA - a school with absolutely no class.

Yep we have fantastic on campus arena (that PC doesn't have) and we"re gonna drive to the dump for a home game?

Sure, great idea....

It is a wonderful world now where PC is jealous of URI.

Enjoy your dump friar fans.

Totally agree ATP.
Absolutely should have been a follow up question as to "why do you feel that way Ed?"

Another follow up when he said he does not see this as a rivalry game then "Who do you consider your biggest rival?" He will look dumbfounded and want to blurt out UCONN who of course isn't even in the NBE any more.

PC and Ed are having trouble adjusting to life as a Mid Major. They need a little more time for it to sink in. They will be the last to get it.

Why this wouldn't be a rivalry game that both schools would want to play up is beyond me. Tons of rivalry game being played all across the counrty now. Most Rivalry teams are in different conferences in today's basketball world so it is one of the reasons I like the OOC time of year.

Looking at the Ryan Center AND the Dunk in TV Highlights last night was depressing.
Agree that 10 minutes into the URI Season was a huge blow to attendance for URI. Iverson's play I think will be worth the price of admission. Who would have believed that this early in the season Iverson would be this good? He could make 1st team A10 if he keeps up the improvement and peaks for A10 Conference Play.

The Dunk was empty last night for Hartford and as always silent. Boring fans. And this is with the best player in College Basketball??

Once people get over the EC loss the Ryan could and should pick up. New stars of the team will emerge in ECs absence such as Iverson and Four and possibly Thompson. The remaining 3 will hopefully pick up too and we can put together a winning streak starting Saturday night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cooley doesn't think his team should travel to Kingston for a game. He however willingly schedules a series with fellow A-10 member UMass where his team will play them in Amherst. Also seems to have no issue with playing BC in Chestnut Hill every other year in a similar sized (to RC) venue. His words have little real substance. He is just talking $hit like a politician. I have no doubt he considers this a rivalry.

Two thoughts:
-- Expect to see lots of Rams taking turns guarding K.D. Lang, including Hassan.
-- I seem to remember Damont Collins playing like a man possessed one year against umAss. Earl Watson can do the same thing against the Fryizz.

You may be right, RIRed, but personally I would be shocked to see Hassan among the players who take turns as the primary defender on KD (excluding of course switches off of ball screens). That sounds like a recipe to get Hassan into serious foul trouble and I think Hurley will try to avoid that. On Dunn I expect a rotation (in order of frequency) of Terrell, Garrett, Iverson, Thompson.

Hassan is not a perimeter defender. He is a rim protector.

This is a game where we need our best players to play like it. The three out of the core 4 still on the court simply need to be better.

Iverson on Dunn would be interesting because of his size. Would worry about foul trouble there to though.

i know it isnt in Hurley's or this team's nature to do so, but on defense I'd "give up" on stopping Dunn.

Go into it figuring he's gonna get his, but dont let him blow up. Concentrate on shutting everyone else down.

Cooley bothers me with this talk. Thats what he was shooting for I bet. I remember when PC never won a game at the Ryan. That was cool.

Win the game. Win the game. Win the game. Win the game.

All the things that have changed. Win the game. Lets change things on the court.

It matters to win this game on so many levels. They recruit against each other. They jockey for fans and have for the past several decades. It feels good for either fan base to win. PC has a ranked # next to their name. Change that narrative. CHANGE THE NARRATIVE.

Win this game. Make the dance. EC comes back. Everyone comes back. Throw in Stan. Kill them at the Dunk next year. Kick off a run not seen around these parts in years.

In this series, look for someone (on either team) , who hasn't done much to date,

to have the game of their life.

Jared Terrell. Nobody has more guts than JT in my opinion, and he is both overdue and physically capable of going off.
