What bothers me more is that the students don't even know when games are going on. I was asked by numerous commuter students in the North lots on the day of the game with Valpo what was going on. It takes little funds to market the campus community. Why are the students so disengaged?

Yeah, I'm not sure the Valpo game marketing was planned/executed so well. I remember EZBuckets saying that marketing/promotion wouldn't begin until a few days before the game, but maybe the novelty of a 10am game REQUIRED additional longer term promotion, since it's rather disruptive to one's normal Tuesday morning schedule.

Look for a very intimate gathering for LaSalle this Saturday. Coming off two straight losses, a bad LaSalle team, semester break with students away, and close to the Patriots playoff game time. That all spells very few people in the Ryan Center seats. I had pretty much decided a week ago (even before the last two road losses) I would be staying home for the Pats. Their game is actually meaningful and they usually don't disappoint their fans. My guess is that many will feel the same as I do.

I haven't officially decided, but I'm more likely to go to URI on Saturday after these losses. The results aren't there, but I haven't seen lack of effort or caring from the team, so I feel like they need all the fans they can get right now.

So if the Pats get to the point of disapponting their fans will you not go to their game also? Or will it e a coin flip if both teams are disappointing.
Since I'm a big Pats fan but URI Basketball is huge for me, I'll be at URI, just as always even during the last 7 win season 4 years ago.

I know the conflict with Patriots-Chiefs presented some schools with attendance problems, but if you think URI has attendance woes, then consider yesterday's LIU-Bryant game with its attendance of 82.

Conference play after the students return will provide a boost, but sure this year's attendance has been lower than expected. That said, nobody expected the team to be where it is until 10 mins into the first game.

With this low attendance, the URI Foundation will probably have to step in and cover any losses between Hurley's guaranteed gate receipts. Athletics will pay the URI Foundation back with 20% premium.

Obviously, with the NCAA being virtually a certainty going into this year, everyone was comfortable with that arrangement given even a one-and-done would net the program over $250,000 for 6 consecutive years.

As you note, Attendance for conference games is usually better and the average should rise. It will still however end up well below 5k. I did not expect as much of a falloff as we have seen and for it to have been there since day 1. I thought the supposedly good advance ticket sales would help offset the loss of EC and mediocre start to the season. My take is that tickets sales once the season started have been extremely poor. With no momentum, casual fans have not purchased tickets as the season progressed. Most of the people going to the games bought their tickets before the season even started. Imagine how bad the numbers would be if this team had not started with high expectations and was on its way to a 20 loss season.

Based on reports that were coming out of Kingston, advance tickets sales were up this year. That would make sense since expectations for a good season were high. Full season ticket packages were probably up a bit. My guess is that much of the increased sales related to the min pack sales. These are already typically higher in years when PC visits the Ryan Center. I would think the prospect of a good season would increase sales of these even higher.

My take on the low attendance this year is that many that bought advance (bought before season start) sale tickets are not using them, in season single game ticket sales have been dismal, and students have not been showing up.

As I have written before, the steep and immediate decline has really surprised me. The remaining St Joe's, Dayton, and UMass games are likely to have good attendance numbers (not so much for GMU and Duquesne) but this will not be enough to greatly increase the average. This season is headed to a bottom half average attendance number for the history of the Ryan Center. It seems that very few casual fans are buying tickets during the season. I suspect most of those in attendance for games bought their seats in advance prior to the start of the season.

I sincerely hope the athletic dept is keeping a close eye on this. Any notion that all you have to do is open the doors and turn the lights on and they will come is being shown to be totally misguided. It used to be that a crowd of 4,500 to 5,000 for most games was a given. That is no longer the case. This is a troubling trend. Advance ticket sales were supposedly up prior to the start of the season. While the team is not meeting the preseason hype, it is not as if it has performed horribly. I shudder to think what will happen if a subpar below .500 season is the expectation. How low will the numbers fall then?

Seems like fans are looking for a winning team to get behind but they are done throwing money away on a mediocre product. Thus we see attendance creeping up the past couple years and then plummeting this year.

I know I went to a lot more game the previous 2 years. I have been to 2 URI games this year, the opener and PC.

Speaking of PC, now that they are winning and making tournaments I keep getting invited to their games for either business or pleasure. I will likely attend more PC games this year than URI games. Amazing what a winning product will do for attendance....

It is not a good sign when four of the last five years are the worst years for attendance in the Ryan Center's history. Three of these four years are with Hurley as the coach and he is generally popular. I think we are seeing a national trend in college athletics attendance here in Kingston. People will only come out these days for a winning product. School loyalty does not go as far as it once used to. College athletics is becoming more like the pros.

Winning helps, for sure. Advertising and promotion do, too (understood - not as much) and I don't really see much of either. Even as a season ticket holder, I got my tickets...and that is the only communication I've had with the school or team all year. When I get single tickets to away games...those schools send me all kinds of stuff...and I get nothing from this school. Why not stuff like, for example...send the season ticket holders (or even just past purchasers) some comps or discount vouchers to bring friends...flyers for special promotions....something, anything...?

Nothing is going to replace winning...but it's like they're not even really trying...

I don't remember seeing a single advertisement for a game this year. If I hadn't bought tickets and follow the team religiously I would have no idea there was a basketball team in Kingston. It's pathetic. Everywhere you go there are PC ads. No URI. This needs to get fixed. I don't care if the athletic admin thought that with the higher expectations it would be a given or not.

In the spirit of our roller-coaster season, I am having an up/optimistic day. I think our remaining five games may see attendance like this:

Dayton 7k+ (ESPN2 Friday Mini-plan option)
SJU & UMass 6k range (SJU on Saturday /UMass Mini-plan option on senior day weeknight)
Duquesne 5k range (Saturday)
GMU 4k range (weeknight)

This would not significantly increase the season average as there are already 12 games in the books. It would however push it up a few hundred.

Part of the problem is the unfavorable A-10 home schedule versus last year. In essence we traded last year's line-up of GW, Davidson and VCU for George Mason, Duquesne and Saint Louis. That difference cost us about 6000 fans. It doesn't totally explain the attendance problem, but it is a contributing factor.

The UMass game is always a big sell...even with both teams struggling this season.

Maybe URI should hype the Dayton game....

as a steel cage match to the death....

Dan "Foul Mouth" Hurley vs. the "Gang of Fouls" Refs.

Come out swinging, and may the worst man [or men[ win.......

Might bring in the younger crowd, since they like MMA and pro wrestling so much.....

3000 less fans in attendance after the St. Joe's horror show. I know it was a weeknight game against a lesser opponent, but how many of those fans come back on Friday for Dayton?

Attendance will be strong for Dayton as it is a weekend night, high profile ranked opponent, and ESPN game. More than just the regulars will come out for this. This game had the potential for sellout prior to the St. Joe's game. My guess is it will be a strong 6K+. I think it may be the last chance for a big crowd. A game vs Duquesne (even on Saturday night) and a weeknight game against a horrible UMass are not going to get many casual fans. It will mostly just be the hardcore regulars at those games.

It is a troubling sign that there have been SIX games with attendance in the 3k range this season. These were all part of the season ticket packages and not like some previous poorly attended games that were part of tournaments arranged with match-ups just prior to play. It used to be a very rare occurrence to not draw over 4k to the Ryan Center. That is no longer the case. The new rare occurrence for Rhody hoops seems to be getting over 5k for a game.

An energetic crowd of 6105 showed up tonight for the game with Dayton. I had thought attendance for this game would be a bit better but most people have long moved on from Rhody hoops for the year. There will not be big crowds for the remaining two games.

To me, the worst part of our attendance woes this year is it really only takes about 6000 people to really get the Ryan Center rocking and be a really fun place to be. When expectations were high at the beginning of the season, I though that would be the average night this season.

We do not need to wait for the UMass game to declare a winner, since even if that game is a sellout, the average attendance for 17 games would be 4,867. That figure is below all 95 predictions so the prediction closest to that number is 5,048.

The winner of the attendance contest is luke!

Yes it is. It was the 4th highest total this year. I was expecting a number in the low 4k range. 5,112 was very good considering it was not a marquis opponent, came off a two game losing streak, and occurred in what has been a disappointing season.

The potential for much better attendance is certainly there. Success on the court with wins is however the key contributor to that.
