They should put the upper level end zones on sale for 5$, general admission. Maybe even 3$. Get some fannies in the seats, maybe get a new fan or two. Hopefully they would spend money at the concessions.

There needs to be a massive ticket giveaway to local youth hoop leagues for this game.

Hopefully already underway ......

Good public relations and maybe sell a few snacks. I fear 2500 for this game otherwise!
you going to the game?

Poor attendance is not only an issue at URI. UMass honored John Calipari Wednesday 12-16-15 at their game versus New Orleans. UMass was coming off three straight losses. A "crowd" of just 4,273 came out to the 9,493 seat Mullins Center for the tribute to their most successful coach of all time, the only coach to have ever won an NCAA game for them.

I'm sure there will be pages of posts dedicated to it in between the 10-15 posts about the actual game.
It's hugely important to our coach. That's why it's such an important topic.
It's been said here before, but...if he doesn't 'win', his options are limited. If he 'wins', the crowds will come and it won't be an issue. I'd wager there are few people outside his family that go to the games because 'it's hugely important to our coach.' I go because I think the team has potential...if they sucked, I wouldn't...

Saturday prediction...3000. If they had won 2 of three from Valpo, PC, Neb...maybe 4500... total wag's...

Proves my point. This fanbase is filled with fair weather fans. You apparently are one of them. I've been to at least 4 or 5 games every year for the past 40 years. And there were plenty of those years that we sucked.

I bought season tickets this year and may go to as many games this year as you have in the last 5. I will go to every home game. I will also go to @UMass, @Brown, and quite possibly @St. Joe's. I will admit it... if the team sucked...I would probably only go to 4 or 5 games per year...like, um...you? and if that makes ME a fairweather fan...I guess WE just have to live with that, eh? ;)

No apologies necessary and no offense intended... This team needs all the support it can get, for every individual game. Labeling fans or parts of the fan base as 'fair weather' is pointless and borderline prejudiced. When the place is full, and I'm thinking everyone wants that, no one cares about the makeup of the crowd... 8-)

That's totally fair and understandable, nothing wrong with that at all. But then maybe it's not fair to constantly question why others aren't there more often? Just as you have your reasons, maybe others do to?

My reasoning is that he said if we suck, he wouldn't go to games. That is the exact definition of a fair weather fan.

Curse those fair-weather fans...what should be done with them? Ban them from the Ry? Tell them to stay away?
I know, when they come, make them sit in a certain section and wear that silly DD foam hat only with an "FW" on the front.

LOL...'ALL fans matter'. They need to try to get more fans, by winning, and folks shouldn't be concerned about assigning a fan quality rating...

Decided to surf college basketball games on ESPN3 via Apple TV on Sunday and found that many games were played to sparse crowds, some games without cheerleaders or bands. Two exceptions were at Monmouth and given the performance of that team and the fact it was their home opener, the full house was no surprise, and also noteworthy is the large, energetic home crowd that New Mexico seems to draw for every game. But most games were sparsely attended and particularly bad was the 3200 fans rattling around in Cleveland State's 13,610 seat Wolstein Center for an intra state game against Ohio.

But win and bring in a name opponent and the fans flock to games. The best evidence of that is this weekend's Northeastern Winter Showdown which lined up Michigan State to come to Boston for a three sport series staring with the women's basketball teams meeting Friday night, the #1 Michigan State men's team playing Northeastern Saturday at 12:30 PM, and the schools' hockey teams facing off later that same day. The men's basketball game will be the first sellout of Matthews Arena since December, 1995.

We will never average 6000 a game in the RC unless we go to multiple NCAA tournaments.

Even then, playing cupcakes won't draw big crowds.

Just a fact of life in URI land.

Location plus small fan base plus lack of winning big games, is a triple whammy right now.

And Dan has to know this. At some point, if things don't improve, URI won't be real happy with having to pay a large chunk of their less than anticipated BB revenue to Dan.

Just sayin'

Actually, Obadiah, this was the idea of the Michigan State AD. This is a home and home deal with Northeastern going to Michigan State too.
Actually a great idea as this saves on air travel, hotels, etc but also drums up some good excitement for fans and athletes alike with all 3 teams involved.

I think the staff scheduled this year pretty well. Home games when students are on campus and away games when they are not. That is how it should be set up IMHO.

As predicted, a light turnout for Iona. Attendance for the eight OOC games averaged 4,551. Half the games had less than 4k. URI averaged 5,085 in six OOC games last season. The dropoff of 534/game works out to be a 10% decline.

Wonder if we're going to approach last year's late season numbers for our league opponents.

Since we're trending in the wrong direction on the court, and don't have as many home games against the top the league, I'd say we won't.

Things could still change, but it's not looking good.

In addition to better A-10 home opponents, URI had momentum as last season progressed. The Rams had win streaks of six and five games during part of the league schedule. I don't see this team getting on a roll like that. We averaged 5,924 for league games last season. Even if we were to miraculously reach that number again (which i do not expect), the average for the year would still be less than the prior season. Good attendance is tied to winning, positive momentum, and excitement. I unfortunately do not think we will see enough of any of these.

As of ten home games. URI attendance is down an average of 600+ fans per game versus last season and that amounts to loss to the Athletics Dept. coffers of about $100k so far. We will have two more home games at season's end, so that will soften the shortage.

This is what they have played the past 4 years around Christmas:

2016 Christmas will be on Sunday (this is a leap year as this year Christmas was on a Friday)
More than likely a game will be played on the Saturday or Sunday before Christmas but maybe there could be a game during the week since Christmas is on a Sunday.

2015 Iona Saturday December 19

2014 Detroit Saturday December 20

2013 New Hampshire Sunday December 22
2013 Southern Mississippi Saturday December 28

2012 Yale Sunday December 18
2012 Providence College Friday December 23 (this was an exception because PC had a conflict - game was discussed for cancelling. Normally played first week of December)

IMO I BELIEVE THE DECLINR IS RELATED TO THE INCREASE IN TV COVERAGE.MORE GAMES TELIVISED THIS SEASON THAN BEFORE

HOPEFULLY THE ATHLETIC DEPT SEES INCREASED REVENUES FROM THE NETWORKS TO OFFSET ATTENDANCE REVENUE

The decline imo is largely due to unmet expectations, at least until the last week or so.

We keep playing the way we have been lately, and winning, we'll get some bigger crowds the rest of the season, although the quality of the opponents overall isn't great.

We did have good attendance toward the end of last season, so it will be almost impossible to improve on last season's average.

I don't think tv has had much of an effect on attendance this season. I agree with rambone 78 that the decline has much more to do with failing to build momentum and meet high expectations.

I will say I am surprised by the size of the drop off and the fact that it began right from the start. I had thought that advance tickets sales were much higher this year based on comments out of Kingston. If that was truly the case, I would have thought the numbers would have been better.

The program can no longer solely rely on marketing hope and high expectations. It has not been to the tournament since 1999. People want results. An NCAA bid will really be a boost to the psyche of Ram fans and bring excitement back. Until that occurs, I think we will continue to see rather lackluster attendance numbers.

Maybe the attendance simply is not there to be had in as large numbers as people think. Many graduates move out of state. Many students are not hyped for the team when on campus - why should they be hyped upon graduation?
In general, population of season ticket holders is pretty old
Losing EC hurt. Would have been better for ticket sales if EC had not been with team from the start - made for a big disappointment to be without a potential conference POY

As for TV turn on tonight. I have dozens of games to,pick from at all levels of play and many conferences. You can stream most any games you want.

The availability of games on TV, Internet, I Phone, etc is only going to get more, common, not Less, so might as well adjust to that as nothing will change there. Next season my guess is every single game will be capable of being viewed - how, away and neutral court.

Every game this year is able to be watched live, whether that is on TV or an online stream.

I had a mother and son come into my place of business last week, and she was wearing a URI sweatshirt. I asked if she was going to the game that night and she replied that her son was student. I spent a few minutes with him chatting about school and asked if he was going to the game. He didn't know about the game, didn't know anything about the team, and basically was indifferent. He was a junior, had absolutely no interest, and nothing I said moved him. I wanted to slap him.

I'm still not getting the part about "marketing." I live in WK and I think I have seen 1 (one) URI hoops commercial on TV since the season started and heard 0 (zero) on the radio. Where is everyone seeing this "marketing" I keep hearing about?

They are usually very targeted around big conference games, so I would expect to see them leading up to the Dayton game, for example. In the past, they've done a full blitz (TV, Radio, billboards on 195 in Providence, etc, for big games vs VCU.

That seems a little backwards to me. The Dayton game will have a big crowd with zero advertising. If you search for tickets to future games, Dayton has been selling the best by far. I would think they would push the "middle of the road" type games. I don't think all the advertising in the world will boost a crowd to a team like Rider. But, games like St. Joe's and Richmond would benefit, I believe. (well, too late for one of them). Games like PC and conference games against the top A10 teams sell themselves and get plenty of free media coverage. The games against crappy non-conference teams are most likely not going to sell no matter what. But, those "middle of the road" type games might get a boost from 5000 to 7000 with some good marketing.

I agree. For St Joes, I would open the commercial with Rhody vs the bird. Show highlights of great plays against St Joes. And end with, "You need to see what's NEXT!"

I think Keaney Blue should come up with a marketing campaign and sell it to the Rhody sports marketing dept. OK, let's hear some ideas!

Dayton would be very easy. A series of "Just Marquis". And end with "Just Jarvis"
For SLU, I would show the Billiken and have a title, "This creature is coming to Rhode Island" Then clips of games. "It must be beat". Clips of games. Then show highlights of the game we just kicked their ass. "Billikens don't belong in Rhode Island"

Where are we placing these ads? Who is our target market? Is it the casual URI grad fan? Is it the current students? Are we bringing back old fans and/or attracting new fans? Is it all of the above? These are some of the questions that have to be answered.

Play them during Celtics games. Hell, play them during Friar games. The market is Rhode Island/Conn/Mass basketball fans. And I think their should be a 10% discount for members of the Alumni Association. Might as well push that too. But get the Alumns attention, and maybe get some peripheral fans as well.

Some people don't like basketball. Plus, look at some of the posting holy wars that break out on here about the football and hockey programs. Star Wars has made over a billion dollars, and I still know at least three people who haven't seen any of them. Heck, the Super Bowl was watched by 114M in the U.S. in 2015, which still means that more than 200M weren't watching it.

It's true that not everybody is interested in basketball, but to be totally ignorant of what's going on in your community is either the fault of the marketing department, or you are completely missing the college experience.
