2015-16 Prediction Contest Summary

[Obadiah]

This year's contest drew 95 participants, a record high level. The season ending injury to EC, nine minutes into season, brought about a chance for all participants to revise their predictions and over 80% took advantage of that offer. The revised predictions showed a decrease in all five components.

Overall record predictions range over a narrow band, from rhodylaw with the most optimistic view of 28 wins to the most pessimistic prediction that of ramfan85 with 17 wins. Over 90% predicted a 20+-win season. While it understandable that many chose not to revise their forecast, I do not get why about 20 chose not to change Matthews as top scorer. Those in this group can still win the contest as long as the top scorer component is not needed as the tiebreaker.

Send me a PM to report any errors or omissions. Please note that several posters submitted identical attendance predictions and given time constraints I made small changes to eliminate duplications. Also, several failed to meet the contest guidelines and, therefore, did not qualify.

The summary is clustered based on overall record. Within each cluster, predictions are sequenced by conference record and then team scoring average.

I have been a little derelict in monitoring results to date, but with the loss to Maryland, both gorhody 89 and BornNBred33 have been eliminated from the contest. These are the earliest eliminations I can recall and the perils of not taking the opportunity to revise after the EC injury. Another OOC loss will eliminate another 12+ participants.

As an anomaly, rhodylaw and NJ03 who were the only posters to predict a 12-1 OOC record would have been eliminated, but survive because they have the sole bet in their respective overall record clusters of 28-3 and 27-4.

Obadiah, for clarification sake can you restate the rules of the contest? I had thought, quite possibly wrongly, that the first criterion was overall record and, in case of a tie, the next criterion would be conference record and , in the event there is still a tie, the next criterion would be leading scorer. If that is correct, there are well more than 15 people remaining. ???

Yes,ramsman you are essentially correct, but you missed that the conference record has to fit with the overall record, unlike the other component tie breakers. Let me explain by using, as an example, the cluster predicting an overall record of 26-5. It is still mathematically possible for the Rams to achieve a 26-5 record, but to do that they have to go 18-0 in conference. None of the eleven bettors in the 26-5 cluster predicted a 18-0 conference record. So if the Rams do finish with a 26-5 mark, the bettor closest to a conference prediction would win and that is Kingston (he picked 16-2) and the other 10 bettors cannot beat that so they are in essence already eliminated. This type analysis can be done with each cluster, so I don't know if the Dude is correct on specifically fifteen, but many have been eliminated in other clusters as well. This case is exactly why I considered dropping the conference prediction as part of the bet, since it cause lots of early exits from game.

Actually, if my calculation is correct we still have almost half the field still alive after half the season. Sounds about right to me.

Yes, ramsman you are correct! 44 remain standing, some tottering, and 51 have been eliminated. If you looked just at the overall record, only two have been eliminated, but that is not the way the contest is run.
