Week #2 - Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

Week #2 begins and the polls out today have small significance given the few games actually played. No A-10 teams were ranked in the top 25 in either poll. URI did get 5 votes in the AP Top 25 poll. Also getting votes were Dayton, PC, Old Dominion, and Valparaiso. Dayton and Davidson also got votes in the USA Today poll.

For the week URI OOC opponents were 8-6, a winning percentage of 57.1. Too early to have any great meaning.

The A-10 went 13-3 in the shortened week, unfortunately, most of the games were played on home courts facing generally inferior competition. The best opponent played was James Madison and Richmond managed to lose that one.

In Monday night action in the A-10

* George Mason at Mercer. 7 PM. On ESPN3

* New Orleans at Duquesne. 7 PM.

* #6 Virginia plays at George Washington. 7:30 PM. On ESPN2.

* Radford visits VCU as part of the 2k Classic. 7 PM.

In OOC action:

Buffalo at Old Dominion. 7 PM. This game is part of Hall of Fame Tip Off.

Holy Cross at Brown. 7 PM. Brown's home opener.

Morehead State at Illinois State. 8 PM. On ESPN3.

Wow crazy sequence of missed shots on both ends results in a loose ball scramble. GW recovers and keeps ball on alternating possession.

7.5 seconds to go. GW gets fouled after a missed Cavalier 3. Double bonus....

GW hits both FTs, and as expected allows Virginia to go full court and get a barely contested layup without any foul.

2.9 seconds left. GW has huge inbounds and can use the entire baseline.

Virginia gets a foul called before the ball is even inbounded. GW to line without using any time. 4 point lead. Just need 1 here to ice it....

GOT ONE
missed next!

Virginia can't do anything and chucks a desperation three.

A10 with HUGE non-conf scalp!!

Great win by GW!

In other conference action:

GMU falls to 0-2 as the Patriots lose at Mercer, 69-60.

Duquesne beats New Orleans, 95-75.

Unlike Georgetown, VCU cruises to a 92-74 win over Radford.

Also,

ODU easily beats Buffalo, 77-58.

With a strong second half effort, Brown wins its home opener over Holy Cross, 71-55.

The A-10 record was 4-2 for the day.

* Dayton routed Alabama, 80-48. Transfer player, Charles Cooke, scored 21 points and gives Dayton the depth the Flyers lacked last year.

* Rider fell at La Salle, 73-60. Jordan Price contributed 28 points for the Explorers.

* St. Bonaventure loses to Syracuse, 79-66. The Bonnies held a 6 point halftime lead, and built it to a 10 point lead in the first 5 minutes of the second half. before Syracuse came on strong. The Bonnies have not beaten Syracuse since 1981.

* Fordham defeats D2 Queens, 76-57. Queens cut the Fordham lead to 7 early in the first half, but Fordham then surged on the strength of balanced scoring from the Rams' starting five.

* UMass beats Harvard, 69-63. UMass put together a strong second half effort though Harvard cut the UMass lead to 4 with less 5 minutes left, but UMass repulsed every threat after that.

In OOC games:

* Cleveland State used a second half surge to overcome a one point halftime deficit in their win over D2 Malone, 62-46.

* In their home opener, American loses to Hampton, 61-48. Hampton, the favorite to take the Mid-Eastern Conference title, came out strong in second half to overcome American which managed to reduced a double digit deficit to 4 with a minute left in game.

* Nebraska led by seven at midway through the first half, but then Villanova used a 22-0 run to take over the game leading to an easy 87-63 win.

* Georgetown gave Maryland all it could handle before falling, 75-71. Game was tied 68 all with a little over a minute to play when Rasheed Sulaimon made a 3-pointer to key the Maryland win.

* Using their size to advantage, Oregon State romped over fast paced Iona, 93-73.

I don't know what Neubauer's issue was. What did he realistically expect? Fordham has been bad for many years and that is expected to continue this season. They lost their first game to Texas-Arlington, which to say kindly is not a basketball powerhouse. They then open at home against a non D1 school. They still drew more than their average of last year and he is unhappy?

That's pretty rough. I don't want to see anyone score their 1,000th point this season. (Except for Hassan. If Hassan goes off for 400+ points this season I will be happy as anyone you've seen.)

In Wednesday action in the A-10, the conference goes 3-0 and notches another power conference scalp.

* Buffalo got the first basket, but after that St. Joseph's waltzed away to a convincing 89-67 win.

* Richmond in a neat win over Wake Forest, 91-82. TJ Kline put in 19.

* Saint Louis had to hold on in a 70-60 win over SIU-Edwardsville.

In OOC games:

* Valparaiso in a easy 78-40 win over D2 IU-Kokomo. Alec Peters continued his hot shooting with 18 points.

* Old Dominion routs Morgan State, 79-48.

* Brown loses to Niagara. A Brown run at start of second half brought the Bruins to within three, but they could go no further. Steven Spieth had 15 for the Bruins and Kuakumensah added 10 points with 11 rebounds.

* Houston slaughters Prairie View A&M from stem to stern, 101- 69.

Had no idea Kokomo was in Indiana! Wonder why the Beach Boys wanted to go there...

Bermuda, Bahama...

Also, Obes, PC escaping with a good win over Illinois despite an off night for Dunn. Will make our win over them in a few weeks that much better!

I've watched a little bit of TCU's game. They look really good. But they're playing Houston Baptist.
TCU has good athletes, they're big. It'll be a tough game for us.

Three A-10 home sellouts on the Friday night that URI played American (Patriot League) in front of 5,089. Interestingly, George Mason, coming off a dreadful season and expected to struggle again, drew 5,124 for its opener versus Patriot League member Colgate.

In Thursday action, the A-10 went 3-0 highlighted by George Mason's win over Ole Miss. This is the same GMU that lost at home to Colgate! Go figure.

In OOC action:

UNH beats Holy Cross, 73-69. HC appears to have one of the its worst teams in recent years. How the mighty have fallen!

TCU beats Houston Baptist like a drum, 90-63.

Nebraska easily over Delaware State, 75-60.

Valparaiso gets another D2 scalp in Trinity (IL), 89-42. Their next game on the road against Oregon will be another real test for the Crusaders.

George Mason carrying the torch for the A-10 in Charleston! Just beat Oklahoma State 71-68 in OT!
Shavon Thompson with 20 and 17. Beast.
They'll play the winner of UVA and Long Beach St.
This new couch for Mason must be the real deal. Too bad they dropped those two games to Colgate and mercer.

Wow, good for Mason! This week will certainly pump some life into their program and could spring them up the A10 rankings faster than we would have imagined this season if their confidence continues.

And another loss for Travis Ford in a season where he's under added scrutiny.

The A-10 is 5-1 vs the Power-5 thus far in the early going:

Richmond over Wake Forest
George Mason over Mississippi
George Mason over Oklahoma State

Syracuse over SBU

The box score says George Mason attempted 24 three pointers and only 7 free throws in the game. Is that right? Weird.

Oklahoma State didn't have Forte, but that's still a nice win for GMU.

How is Mo Alie-Cox only a junior? Seems like he's been around forever.
