Signs - 2015-2016
It's that time of year again! I'm looking forward to making new signs for each game and speaking politely with refs and opposing players and coaches.
Here are a couple of ones from the STAC game.
7 new signs for tonight's game against American... 1 oldie but goodie... See you there

Are you going to post your all signs here after the games? That would be a good idea in case anyone missed them

I love the Rhode Block one and the Boss one. Took a pic of the boss sign and texted it to my boss from the game.

Not prevented from showing them to any one side, I just don't do a good job of turning that way. I've had other people tell me I need to turn to that side more.

They banned your sign? That is ridiculous and cowardly.

Remember guys...family friendly atmosphere. Thats what's most important. Not getting fans in the building or those fans having fun...family friendly! God forbid a child reads something on a sign that is 100% true, is funny, and isn't vulgar...think of the children!!

Wasn't about the children with the banned sign. Coaches protect their own. Didn't want to be disrespectful, ya know?

Re: Signs - 2015-2016
The best signs are funny with some irony and wit. The "cheaters" sign was too serious and controversial and should have been avoided, but that's just my opinion. Besides it's not like Houston is some rival like PC where I would have a distinctly different view.

Like the meme of undefeated NFL teams a few weeks ago, all in the cat family...panthers, bengals and cheetahs. Of course, being a Pats fan, I hated it. Re: Signs - 2015-2016
The sign banning thing just continues the biggest problem with URI basketball overall throughout it's existence: small minded people with no perspective of sports outside of Kingston RI trying to impose their idea of what life inside a college basketball arena should be.
Then those people look at other college arenas, turn around, and wonder why no one comes to the games at the Ryan Center.
Yes, winning cures everything. If you're not winning those big games however, you better make a fan friendly atmosphere that people want to be a part of. Otherwise you'll get 1 sell out a year for a marquee name and if people can fit it in, maybe they'll make another.
Last night was the product of a cumulative effort to sanitize and make that arena "family friendly" since it was opened.
So you want loud bodies in the building right? OK let's break it down:
Who is loud at sporting events? 18-34 year olds or families?
Who understands what's going on in the game to know when/how to cheer? 18-34 year olds or families?
Who is more likely to stand and yell instead of telling people to sit down and not say certain things? 18-34 year olds or families?
Who has free time to go to games on week nights? 18-34 year olds or families?
Who has more "recreational money" to spend on tickets/concessions? 18-34 year olds or families?
Hmm...looks to me like those answers are decidedly skewed one way. So it looks like 18-34 year olds are who you should be focusing on, and framing your experience to cater to.
OK, so how do you get those people to a) get into the building, b) have a good time, c) get them to come back?
If your answer is: treat them like children and keep the beer in a designated area where they can't see the game, make sure they don't have potty mouths and say only nice things to opposing teams and fans, and hassle the few that actually are into the game when they express themselves - you're probably part of the problem.
Now obviously the sign getting banned isn't the biggest thing in the world, but it's just a symptom and a sad reminder of what the goals of that arena are.
I've been to plenty of other arenas at the pro and college level - BC, Northeastern, UMass, Rose Hill, Palestra, Liacouras, PC, Brown, Izod, MSG, Atlantic City, and Barclays specifically for URI, and even as my level of fan, I've only ever drawn ire from stadium officials at the Ryan Center (minus one time in Atlantic City). Which is pretty sad considering it's the home arena for the team I cheer for most.
I'm sure Dan and the team would appreciate more 18-34 year old fans coming to games, maybe the Ryan Center should try and make the home gym a place where those people want to come?

Re: Signs - 2015-2016
I appreciate everyone's responses.. Positive and negative.
Based on the responses I feel like I should be clear about the "banning." The request not to show the sign did not directly come from The Ryan Center.
Although Vinny Turco delivered the message, it was in fact Coach Cox that requested that I not show the sign. I was surprised and not very happy.
So, I really shouldn't say the sign was banned but rather a member of our coaching staff requested that I not show it again.
I was not happy then and I'm not happy about it now, but at the same time I have an enormous amount of respect for Coach Cox and so I respected his request.
