selling beer is the dumbest reco for how to increase attendance

all it will increase is the amount of drunks. i love beer, but why stop there, i bet if the rammettes stripped at halftime we could get some higher attendance? or maybe not, forget what this years crop looks like.

What bothers me is that you don't see any team jackets from the other sports at Rhody. WOULDN'T IT BE NICE TO SEE 40 MEMBERS OF THE FOOTBALL TEAM SITTING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STUDENT FANS. I guess that they are above supporting their fellow student athletes. Maybe the non basketball coaches should make it manatory for their team to attend a certain game.

Nice post, BAR!
Hey how about lap dances, too?
Bus pole dancers in from Fantasies and Foxy Lady.
That would increase attendence.
Chippendales for the women.
Let's just become whores to put "fans" in the seats.

If the whores are in the building, they better be paying for seats. Otherwise, let's just have them working outside the RC and in the parking lots...

So funny. I agree that winning, which is coming sooner than we know, will easily pack the Ryan Center without having to resort to serving alcohol to the masses.

Obadiah wrote:Iggy, you would think that would be the case last year, but the fact is that the first four games last year showed poor attendance with two of the games producing crowds of less than 3,000 for a regular season game, a first in Ryan Center's history. The Loyola game as bad as it was on attendance was better than all first four of last season. Actually attendance improved as last season went along.
I think they sold a lot of three-game packages last year. I noticed some of the people around me where there for a few games but not all. So even though the season was going down the toilet, they had bought the tickets and showed up.

The five-game package is pretty good: SMU, VCU, Dayton, X and UMass
Three-game package: Charlotte, St. Bon and Umass.

I'd expect good crowds at those game.

I think something along the line of a banner with all his teams.

Or a bunch of Stephon Marbury and Craig James heads.

Just a different format now, Iggy. They have all sorts of promotions like that the deal or no deal thing with suitcases, the half-court shot for $15k during the Mason game, musical chairs, etc etc.

I wish they had a Del's concession at the Ryan.
They did at Keaney. Of course it was 100 degrees in Keaney,
and you needed the Del's.

They had Dels for quite awhile in the RC but I think the owner of Dels got in a dispute with the RC owners and pulled out.

There was Dels at the Ryan Center during the Women's NCAA Regional's last spring so I can't say that was it for sure.

The Del's owners thought the fee was way too high.
I don't stay in my seat at halftime, so I don't know what happens then, but I've only seen the suitcase contest a couple of times and haven't seen musical chairs or any of the other contests they used to run during the game. Again, I don't miss them, but it's a big change of philosophy in how to get money out of sponsors.

I did an internship with the URI sports marketing team and along with going to every men's game (which was awesome), I had to sit through a handful of women's games.

Free attendance is a good idea but still wouldn't be nearly enough for me to sit through a game of...that...again.

Dont see what the big issue with the beer is. I was joking about drowning sorrows obviously. People don't need to get drunk to come, some people just enjoy drinking a beer while they watch a sporting event. Beyond adding some fans that wouldn't ordinarily be there it would also more than double the concessions sales that the Ryan is currently generating. Now I will wait for Rod's retort.

haha Good point ATP. The whole half humping the court in the dance thing is a little over the top though. I guess they have to do something because they are not good dancers for the most part.

If Rhody Guy ever saw the real Ramettes, he'd faint.
Tall leggy girls, in little short tight white and blue dresses, with knee high white boots.
Nobody left their seats until the Ramettes routine was over.
Rockettes type stuff, not rolling around the floor, like today's version.
Best half time show anywhere, until John Chuckran bannished them for
being"too slutty".

I did something similar (internship) for a semester and the women's games were so bad and boring that I used to count the people at the games with little trouble. Most games were between 150 and 200 people.

That 2002 season felt special. I've been to a lot of games at the Ryan Center but I can't recall the place being louder than the Temple NIT game. Maybe the St. Joe's game the next year when Vitale was there was the only one that was close.

I remember when the Temple game ended the crowd gave the team a standing ovation. I can't recall ever seeing that at any other game that they didn't win.

As another poster mentioned, the Fordham game drew a great number. And I remember when that game was. It was a Saturday afternoon game when there were other things going on, like the NFL playoffs.
