Who could ever have seen this coming when he was hired a few years ago...

Larry Brown will already have moved on by the time there is a resolution to these charges. He could care less. It will be SMU hoops future coaches and players that will pay the price.

Least surprising development in college hoops this year?

My guess is that this looming cloud factored into Mike Layssard's decision not to go to SMU.

I don't have much sympathy for Brown and SMU, but how have they been whacked already but still nothing on UNC? As I read elsewhere, perhaps if SMU had created an entire fraudulent department instead of just having one guy help one player they would still have a chance to play in the tournament this year.

SMU should have did what UNC did, unearth another violation forcing the NCAA to keep the investigation open, and delaying the penalty until after their tournament run. UNC will get its punishment but it will be after Marcus Paige, Brice Johnson, Kennedy Meeks, and maybe Roy Williams leave.

Larry Brown will turn around your program. You just have to not care what happens afterwards. The NCAA does their fair share of stupid rule and decision making, but his claim of not knowing what was going on in his own program is eye roll inducing.

Although I feel bad for Moore and Kennedy, this opens up another at-large bid for a bubble team that could potentially be an A10 team, like a GW/Richmond/St. Bonaventure.

I guess Larry/SMU bypassed the traditional process of "independent" student groups helping with recruiting by showing visiting recruits "a good time" and "assisting" with assignments once players enroll to keep the charade of student/athlete alive. This is really not cheating because these players are not really students - they are in school to play their sport - and have no interest in doing academic work. Spending time on academic work is counterproductive for both the player and the institution, This is how it works at institutions with a real commitment to making money through intercollegiate athletics. Such student groups must have no traceable connection to the athletic department to avoid UBIT etc problems. Do it right and everyone is happy - the player prepares for his/her real career, the institution has an exciting athletic program that generates lots of money.

Andy Katz
ESPN Senior Writer
SMU has 15 days to appeal postseason ban. COI has 30 days to respond. SMU 14 days for rebuttal. Appeal hearing 30 days later. Results 30 days later. Got it? Earliest SMU will know is Feb., and could be up to Selection Sunday. So this will drag on.

It will be very interesting to see not only how this ultimately plays out this season, but how it affects SMU's recruiting and Larry Brown's future there. If the sanctions are upheld, I don't know if I see Brown wanting to coach with a scholarship restriction over the next couple of years.

... and now poor Ricky Pitino at Louisville who was Larry's assistant at Hawaii and learned from the master. Two coaches who know what it takes for a fast program turn-around. Larry and Ricky are just shocked at what was going on behind their backs.

So one tournament appearance, sanctions coming, and a coaching situation that leaves the future in doubt. I mean what a horrible time to stop down. Hardly seems worth it.

Not to mention the fact that we're smack in the middle of the biggest live recruiting period of the year.

Sorry. Wouldn't be surprised if he had a new gig by the end of the month.
Despite any other redeeming qualities...the guy can coach.

He may get one more gig if he wants it at age 75 but it probably won't end well
