Jimmy Baron- NBA Summer League

Unread post by RamZone72 »

Looks like Jimmy Baron is going to give it one more shot and join the NY Knicks in Las Vegas Summer League. Best of luck to Jimmy!

Knicks wont take him. They don't believe in people that can shoot the ball.

Jimmy just got in the game.
Bricked a three from the top of the key.
Got in at the end of the first quarter. Surprised he got in so early!

Yeah Jimmy looked pretty good. Missed some easy ones. Might've been jittery.
If he gets hot in one of these games he may have a bit of a chance.

Only 9 minutes played for Jimmy tonight. 0-1 from the floor with his one miss being a 3 point attempt. He did manage to make the highlight reel with an incredible save/assist

That game (Lakers / Knicks) was one of the uglier basketball games I've watched in some time.

Yeah, he's gonna be awesome. My first thought when he was drafted was LOLKNICKS, but the guy is seriously skilled. And he's only 19!

Jimmy's a warm body. Same as every URI player since Lamar. Jimmy is a great pure shooter. But slow, short and no defense won't cut it. I'm sure he's great in Europe. Good for him.

I'd feel way more confident if any team but the Knicks drafted him... Okay, the Lakers are a mess too. But still. Maybe Phil is getting the hang of the job? Past GMs would have just traded the pick for a middling veteran, on the insistence of Dolan.

Kevin Pelton on ESPN normally does a good primer each year on summer league stats. The general gist - Putting up impressive numbers, especially for non-rookies, isn't any guarantee of success in the NBA. However, there is a stronger correlation the other way. If you struggle in summer league, it's not a great sign for your future performance.

Good point on Jimmy being tall everywhere but in the NBA. It's interesting to see pro athletes out of context. See NFL lineman in a bar and your head will turn. On the field, it's different.

I am sure it will make playing in Europe far from most of your family and friends much more palatable. I think Billy had been on his own while Jimmy had his wife (and now has twin daughters) in their previous European stops. Being together in the same city should work out well for all of them. Would think Jimmy's European career is starting to wind down now being 29 years old and having a family. Wonder what direction he will go in after his playing days are over. I seem to recall he had once mentioned broadcasting or sports management (not coaching) as possible career paths.

His agent also suggested his older brother who has experience in championships like Turkey, Spain, Russia and Italy. He just Banvit and is ready to revive his career with his brother. "

Quite a story actually.

Jimmy the Natural Shooting Guard and Billy the Natural Point Guard. Brothers playing in Belgium.
I envy them. I love Europe - all parts of Europe.
Here is info on the City in Belgium that they will be playing in.

From interviews during and after his URI career, and his look, I think it's been widely speculated that he can probably get a media job pretty easily post-playing career.

Gilvydas' was an active feature of the Program, and was still active through the Summer.
If you want to get nit-picky, aside from using the Ryan Center on occasion, what has JB Junior done for the University since he graduated -- regardless of his coach's job-situation?
If he's so media savvy, I haven't read much about him extolling the virtues of URI and what a solid education and life experience he had….
I get more of that talking to ordinary kids who go there or who have recently graduated. Or those of us who have graduated or have ties to the University that go back decades.
Also, just to let it be clear: I wish the Baron Boys all the best, but it's not a matter of who was good or better or best when they played.
It should be: "Once a Ram, always a Ram."

Agreed, where's the article on Dawan Robinson who is a real
star in Germany and whose team won the championship?
John Fultz wrote a book, and the local media never mentioned it.
He was a rock star in Italy.
ARD and Preston played overseas for years.
Never read squat about it.
Gilvydas is a unique person, who is still very much connected with
many people here. If he got individual attention on this board,
it was because he graduated recently and still writes a weekly
blog on GoRhody.

We generally aren't heavy-handed when it comes to merging threads and what not. I think the "where are they now?" thread originally started as a Holton thread, spiraled to include others, and at that point, it was simpler to just rename it. Some more prominent or popular players get their own threads at various points (Billy and Jimmy Baron, Lamar Odom, Cuttino Mobley I think) and we usually just keep them separate unless there is a push to merge them.

Did players such as Dawan or ARD also live part of their childhood in RI and attend high school in the state? The local media covers the Barons more because they are considered locals.

I know many former Rams had great offshore careers.

I wish we had a fact thread that discussed and documented these careers both past and present.....would be an interesting read.

The Projo has no motivation to do this ever.....

They have done this in the past, as has the paper I work for (The Independent), and others. It usually gets linked on here, but, as someone who had access to website numbers and stats while at Patch, retrospectives and "where are they now?" on mid-tier Rams like Dawan Robinson and Luther Clay aren't exactly moving product. That's not the only reason you do stories, obviously, but I think the market for that sort of stuff doesn't extend much past this board and other boosters, so in my mind, they're probably features more appropriate for the URI alumni magazine, unless there is a good news hook.

John Fultz is in the URI Athletic Hall of Fame.
He had an incredible Euro career, a colorful
character, who is the only Ram ever to write and have published,
an autobiography.
Never heard a word about any of this, before I made contact with him
on a regular basis.
Yeah, some wise-ass will say,"Old timer stuff". So what?
Doesn't make him any less significant. Oh, but he won't sell papers.
Whatever.

Ramster, how about restaurant menus for Charleroi?
Let's have articles about whatever city Dawan is playing in.
Throw in Naples for Fultz, where he now is an English teacher.
- If you go to TripAdvisor I think you can find the restaurant menus or at least get the name of the top restaurants and go direct
- Dawan is playing in Turin Italy this year which is in Northern Italy, famous city for Fiat. Beautiful City. Daway played in Germany last year. He has had a nice career in Europe.
- I updated the already existing Fultz thead to include info on Naples. I also bought and read his book - highly recommend

My point in showing the info about the city that Jimmy will be playing in is that playing BBall Professionally in Europe is not a bad life. Sometimes it seems that not making the NBA is a big disappointment but playing overseas can be a very good option for players. Most important is the opportunity for playing time. Some players, like Fultz, decide to stay.
For me playing in Europe would be a dream come true. Beautiful cities, nice lifestyle, history, travel, sightseeing....what a life for a guy in his 20's or 30's.
NBA is good but not for all and is certainly not the end all.
