Coaches vs. Cancer 5k
So as most of us are aware of based on the fact that Dan Hurley posted about it hours before his contract extension news was broken, there is going to be a Coaches vs. Cancer 5k at URI on Saturday May, 2nd. It's $25 for non students to register and $15 for students and you can form teams for fundraising purposes. It might be a good look for our board to have a keaneyblue.com team do this. Before Saturday I hadn't done any exercise in quite a while, I've never done a 5k before and I'm what the Body Mass Index calls obese but I'm interested in doing this myself and the event is friendly to people choosing to walk instead of run, so if you can walk 3.1 miles you're welcome to join me. The following two links are to the event information page and the 5k map.

A small FYI, BMI is a very outdated way of measuring overall health and wellness.
My running days are over, but I am looking into attending this event.

I'm already registered and I'll be making the trip down for this one. If anyone is interested in starting a team or group or whatever they call it, I'm definitely interested. So far it's just me and my girlfriend.

When I was in college, I used to run 2-3 miles regularly. My times were pretty good.

Re: Coaches vs. Cancer 5k
I've established a Keaneyblue.com team, so anyone looking to join should be able to now. For those of you looking to join the team, do you have any thoughts on what you want to set for a fundraising goal?
For those of you that want to get involved but don't want to run, I'd be honored to have you donate. You can donate to me through the following link: https://secure.acsevents.org/site/Donat ... XY_TYPE=20
Anyone else joining the team, feel free to post the link to where other posters can donate to you.

So you put it on a page that is the least read?
Keep it up. You're making lots of friends.
I'll pass this one on.
I put it where people could find it, for a reason!
"Down the Line
Off-Topic News, Politics, Music, TV, Movies, Tech and such"
This is a University and more specifically, a basketball sponsored event.

Re: Coaches vs. Cancer 5k
OK, I admit I do not pay attention to which "page" it is on because I have the active topics page bookmarked. When you merge topics, it defers to the one that existed first. I didn't "move" anything anywhere, I just merged the topics. I'll move this thread to better real estate. Will that satisfy everyone?

The first forecast is out, and while normally forecasts this far out aren't reliable, because the forecast calls for plenty of sun with a high of 57, I'm just going to assume that this one is completely accurate.

It looks like my almost-4 Rhody Hoop fan son, my wife and I will all jog/walk this one. Goal is to get signed up for the Keaneyblue.com team and do the Run with Rhody because that's going to be really fun for the little guy.

Re: Coaches vs. Cancer 5k
The online registration for this event is now closed, but you can sign up on The Quad near Ranger Hall tomorrow starting at 8:30.
The weather for tomorrow is looking very nice, sunny and mid 50's for anyone looking to participate.
Finally, if anyone can't attend, but would still like to participate by donating, I'd be honored if you would donate on my behalf. I'm taking part in my first 5k tomorrow for a few different reasons. I really enjoy the direction the basketball program is headed under Dan Hurley, so I believe it's a good idea to support something like this that has his name attached. I love being on campus, it's truly one of my favorite places on Earth, and I don't get there near enough, so the chance to be on campus is a huge draw. Obviously on a general level, anything we can do to fight cancer is something we have to do. And like most if not all of you, cancer has touched me personally. In October of 2011 esophageal cancer came for my dad. He had to go through a few different surgeries, radiation and chemo. And a particularly evil part of this type of cancer was a blockage that caused extreme pain anytime he would attempt to eat. He started off at 235 points, but due to the inability to eat along with all of the other complications he lost 100 pounds fighting the illness, and on June 1st, 2012 cancer finally took him. Watching what he had to go through, I want to do anything I can to attack cancer. While I'm not in any kind of shape to run this 5k, the least I can do is walk the 3.1 miles. And if you would rather donate on behalf of one of our other posters, I encourage them to add the link to their page to this post. And if you do donate to any of us, I can't thank you enough.

Re: Coaches vs. Cancer 5k
Sorry to hear about your father. Sounds like an awful
form of cancer.
I'll be there with my tribe. My daughter is soliciting donations
from her co-workers. She's on the list there, but won't be running.
The kids will run with The Ram.
Andrea Hurley said there will be a Ram, even if she has to put the
costume on.
I suggested Dan do it, but she said he's too much of a germaphobe
to do it.
Should be fun!

Re: Coaches vs. Cancer 5k
Gotta say, this was one of the most fun events I've ever attended at URI.
Great day, nice turnout.
Most of the team was there.
Got to talk to TJ, Jarvis, Terrell, and Iverson.
Iverson is very personable as are all our kids, it seems.
He thinks he'll get his appeal approved by the NCAA.
Said he loves it here.
Dan said, "He's an amazing player."
Dan at 1:00 was going to workout the two recruits who Luke Murray
was showing around on campus.
Dan said it was going to be like a WWE cage match, with only one being the winner.
My granddaughter's ran with Rhody. The cheerleaders and Ramettes couldn't have been nicer to them
Rhody was cool too.
Great raffle prized, which my daughter cleaned up on.
A wonderful gift bascket from Wakefield Liquors, with 8 bottles
of Italian wine. She won a $100. Dunkin Donut gift card. Best of all was a
"Rhody Game Experience", which will consist of pre game tour of The Ryan,
tickets, meet and greet with players, alumni room pre game talk, and an autographed basketball.
Charlotte won a Frozen Scooter.
Just a great day! Two wonderful Rhody events in a week! Love it.
Dan said maybe post game, too, depending on the result of the game.

One more of Dan and my Daughter Andrea.
Speak of, Andrea Hurley was a great hostess for this event.
Also met RowdyRam02 and SmartyBarrett from our board.
Chris Disano was there, with his family and dog, which Dan walked.
Kids took pictures with Hassan and Earl.
Everyone was so friendly.
Doesn't get much better than today, folks!

I told him that means he'd get to play against PC.
He mentioned playing against Dunn in high school.
Seems very upbeat about things.
Terrell is perpetually smiling, and he and Jarvis seem tight.
Funny, the guards hing together and Iverson, Hassan and Earl hung together.
Just a nice bunch of kids.

Like the others have already stated.... thank you Rod! I appreciate every post where you share your experience. I am currently saving up to come back for a trip to watch the team play next season. In case I don't make it back for a game, perhaps coming to run in an event like this would be a nice alternative.

Thanks, DanInAZ!
Gotta say, the sponsors came in with some great prizes.
I'll let you know how "The Rhody Experience" goes, next season.
Dan promised it will be "traumatizing".
They're looking to make this an even bigger event next year.
The funniest thing happened when Dan was drawing the ticket
to win a week at his basketball camp.
The first two went unanswered. Dan said,"There's no age limit!"
Finally there was a winners. "Well, at least she seemed happy."
Dan ran the race, until he stopped to talk to people.
Daryl Jasper, who runs in many events, won his age bracket.
David Cox and Mike Leprey ran, too.
David Cox's wife is very nice.
The players and coaches there were into it, and very friendly.

It was a great day for the 5k, though I must say I was disappointed by the turnout. It seems like we should have a fairly health conscious student body based on the fact that we have a brand new multi-million dollar health center on campus and there's a newly recognized Fitness Club. Seemed like a fairly weak student presence. Where was the Rhody Ruckus for this? And as soft as the student turnout seemed, they did a better job of turning out then the general community. If we want to be recognized as a big time basketball school we have to support these events properly. What if we had bigger name recruits on campus this past weekend? They would have been pretty underwhelmed by the turnout and it could have turned them off from coming here.
Not only is it just a good idea in general to support these events for the health of the basketball program, they're really great events to attend, especially if you want to interact with coach. He started off the race at the back, would talk to people, then jog up to the next pack and talk with them for a while, and so on. I was able to have a nice chat with him for a few minutes, and that was the same kind of atmosphere that was present for the coach's show up in Johnston. It's really refreshing that even as a regular fan you can have the opportunity to have a candid conversation with Dan, you don't need to be a big money booster to have access. Everyone should look to attend these events so they can have the same opportunity. The most interesting part of our conversation centered around EC's surgery, which was successful. In retrospect I wish I had asked him about scheduling.
Living almost an hour away from campus and working another hour further out, I really don't get the chance to get to URI enough, especially in nicer weather. Saturday's event was a real treat to see the campus waking up with the nicer weather and the course highlighted some of the great changes the campus has undergone. And it's always a special treat to spend time on the Quad on a day like Saturday. While sitting on the Quad, it occurred to me that plenty of alumni must feel the same way I do. I think it would be a really great idea for the university to hold some kind of festival on the Quad either just after Commencement or just before the academic year started to try and get alumni back on campus as much as possible.
