Game #7: George Mason

Unread post by runninrams5 »

George Mason

Projected Starters
Johnny Williams 6’8’’ Junior Memphis, Tennesse
28.2 MPG 10.2 PPG 6.2 RPG
Williams goes 240 insides so Jordan will be giving up a lot of weight here to the Patriots leading rebounder and 2nd leading scorer

Eric Copes 6’8’’ Sophomore Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
22.7 MPG 4.3 PPG 4.7 RPG
Another big body down low as Copes goes 245, was a ESPN top 100 out of high school originally signed with George Washington. He missed the first 3 games of the year

Anali Okoloji 6’8’’ Sophomore Brooklyn, New York
16.8 MPG 4.3 PPG 3 RPG
Good defender and athletic big who has got into some foul trouble this year, also a former URI target

Bryon Allen 6’3’’ Junior Largo, Maryland
26.8 MPG 7.7 PPG 2.7 RPG 3.3 APG
The PG of the team has a 2.5 Assist to Turnover Ratio, shoots it a 30 % from 3 so we need to be mindful but not all that worried of his long range game

Sherrod Wright 6’4’’ Junior Mount Vernon, New York
32.3 MPG 15 Pts 4.7 RPG 1.5 APG
Preseason 2nd team all CAA, Wright is the leading scorer and minutes per game for the Patriots, shoots 43.5% from beyond the arc so we will need to find in and have a hand in his face at all times

George Mason has wins against BU, Quinnipiac, Virginia and Mercer with losses against New Mexico and Bucknell who are both quality teams. They go 11 deep with 10 of those 11 averaging double digit minutes, so they have incredible depth which is something we obviously lack. Surprisingly we have and advantage on the glass as we average 37 boards to their 31 so that could be interesting to watch. Overall a game that I think we will be in and if we can control the glass, and make free throws it is a winnable game. I would expect the spread to be somewhere near George Mason -7 or -8

Big team.
Should give us problems on the boards.
Maybe we can out quick them?

Nice article by smarty. But you can't always go by records in this portion of schedule because the OOC for each school has such wide differences and the schedules themselves are not evenly paced, as a school could be in a easy or more difficult portion. For example, in our conference Butler is now 3-2 and Charlotte is 6-0, but their RPI is remarkably different even in this early stretch. Charlotte has to date played no one of consequence and all of their games have been at home or at a neutral site. Charlotte plays only three tough opponents in its entire OOC schedule and has yet to play any of them. Butler, on the other hand, plays a more aggressive OOC and has already played the toughest part of that schedule and with tonight's game against a D3 school they enter the less formidable part though they still have challenging games with Northwestern, Indiana and Vandy.

Totally agree. It's hard to put perspective behind how good/bad a team is at this juncture - even RPI will prove the same issues. Seton Hall, Virginia Tech, and SMU (for example) have waaaay better winning percentages right now than most would anticipate them having when February rolls around. On the surface though, the next six games will likely be easier than the first six.

Maybe I'm optimistic but my guess in the other thread was -2 or -3. Will be betting on URI so I'm hoping you're right, but I don't think we'll get that many points.

Should be a good game though and hopefully we can get a little streak going.

Personally really liking this OOC schedule. Would be interesting to see the breakdown of Baron-inherited games vs. the games that Hurley was able to schedule. I know Auburn was a Baron game and I think the same for the Mohegan games.

Out quick'em........would love to see that. Which brings me to a question. Assume we get some defensive boards, do we have the court speed to push the ball for fast break score and does Coach Hurley want that and only when we/ve got the numbers advantage? Fast break points do not seem to be part of the game plans, we seem to pull the ball out and set up offensive sets. We have had some success scoring off opponents TO/s.

I think in the future we will play at a much higher tempo....but for now the strategy seems to be to shorten the game and execute in the half court, which makes sense given our lack of depth, talent and size.

Battle of the boards....thought it was time to dig into Team Rankings Stats. For what its worth

Code: Select all

Offensive Rebounds/Game Defensive Rebounds/Game
rank # rank #

103 11.5 URI 195 21.7 URI

Roland Houston will be in the house as an asst for GM. Copes is his nephew. Was going to GW until Hobbs got fired. Went with Houston to GM. URI tried to get involved.
Wright was a PC target.
Allen prepped at St. Thomas More. Believe PC and URI showed some interest.

If you use the code function, it's easier to read stuff like this (the code button is right below the subject field when making a post).

Here are the offensive rebounding stats for both teams on KenPom's site:

Code: Select all

George Mason
               For Against D1 Average
Off. Reb. %:	28.8% (250)	30.4% (122)	32.4%

Rhode Island
               For Against D1 Average
Off. Reb. %:	34.3% (124)	35.8% (264)	32.4
So we're better at getting boards on offense, they're better at not giving them up. Should be an interesting match-up.

My guess is no. Cox runs their streaming platform on the NeuLion system, which in my experience trying to find "free" feeds, has proven to be tough to crack.

Honestly, if you are unable or unwilling to subscribe to Cox TV to get the Ocean State Network, you have the option of paying something like $10 on a monthly basis during basketball season to watch multiple games. $10 for multiple games per month is a good option for those who don't have a subscription to Cox TV service.

Why not just go legit and support Rhody's media partner? Without Cox paying to cover the cost of televising Rhody, we'd have virtually NO TV games this season and few most other seasons. URI has a great deal, so I think we should support Cox here.

This is my point exactly. You can also include fans in RI who have Verizon FiOS or Satellite TV, or choose not to have any cable TV at all. They can all enjoy rhody hoops online via Cox Sports Online.

Can't wait for the game tonight, looking forward to see the guys put up a good fight. I think they will have a tough time finding shots against George Mason's good defense and height advantage, but I would love to see the guys play good defense and out-quick them for some easy buckets.

Talent or not, these guys should be better at shooting freebies.

I imagine the Hurleys have been working with them on this, but it's not working.

Let's hope the new guys next year are better, or it's going to cost games especially against better teams.

You don't really need talent to hit free throws. You're at home to boot where there should be no pressure. This team needs easy points and what easier way than foul shots.
