St John's has let Lavin go, here comes the Dan to St John's rumors

Former St. John’s and NBA legend Chris Mullin, Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley and Manhattan coach Steve Masiello are among the leading candidates to replace Lavin, sources told SNY.tv.
It could be an old-school vs. new-school thing where the old-school guys want Mullin, and the new-school guys prefer Hurley, or possibly Masiello.

One source said Mullin would have an edge, but it remains unclear if he wants the job.

“He’s the most famous person in the school history, he’s going to have a decided edge on whatever name comes up,” the source said. “Whether he takes it or not, I don’t know. At one point there was mutual interest but that guy’s got a pretty good damn life.”

I'd love for Goodman, et al, to define "candidate". If it just means a school "would love" to have coach X as their guy, then fine. There's no assumed mutual interest. Just one way wish list shit.

For the ADs at schools like JohnnyCakes, they HAVE to go after a Dan Hurley type or else they'll be asked why they didn't.

like ATP said it's mostly that St John's will want to talk to him, doesn't mean Dan has interest. Like someone jsut said on twitter, it's better to have a coach everyone wants than to have a coach no one wants

Hard to see Hurley making a lateral move at this stage. If a higher end ACC or Big Ten job opened up? Maybe. The Big Least? Can't see it.

Geez, I understand the fascination because he's a legend there, but Chris Mullin has no recruiting or head coaching experience. He's also in the Sacramento front office, and he's brought up as an NBA head coaching candidate. (The scuttlebutt was that the Kings were pressuring him to take that job before it ultimately went to George Karl.) I think it would be tough to get him to jump to St. John's when he's a candidate for NBA jobs, and there isn't any real evidence - good or bad - to suggest how he would do coaching college hoops.

My guess now that he has a degree Masiello is the guy here. Mullin lacks experience and just brings legend status.
With this profession you can never say never, but that is a couple more guaranteed years of losing for their next coach, and I cant see our Coach signing up for that with what he has on the roster for next couple seasons. If SJU wasn't such a shit show I would be more concerned.

I doubt either goes but money talks and, honestly, what high level ACC job is going to offer Dan a job until he makes an NCAA run (at the very least). If he left this year (which is very unlikely) it would be to a place like St. Johns.

As a Vols fan this firing is very frustrating. I don't think they should've fired Pearl actually. The fans ran Cuonzo out of town. Greg Marshall should go to rocky top

The NCAA gave Pearl a show cause. He's lucky he is back in D1. Tennessee had to can him. And, really, firing Cuonzo is debatable. The mistake was hiring Tyndall.

Interesting that Zagoria mentioned both Hurleys. He usually wouldn't throw anything out there without them knowing it. I really doubt that he would consider it but I do worry about the money a bit. Saint John's could easily go to $2MM/year for the right guy.

You can also remember just a little while back how Dan was "legitimately interested" in Rutgers and played along to assure that he got what he wanted here at Rhody. Sure helps to throw that out there while in active negotiations with your existing school.

Tennessee didn't fire Cuonzo, he left because the fans in Knoxville are a bunch of crazy fuckheads who harassed him with racist hate mail because the vols went to the NIT a couple times. All the SEC fans in the south can't handle any kind of losing without getting volatile or extremely pessimistic and annoying. Yeah and hiring Tyndall makes firing Pearl make no sense, since they knew Tyndall has had problems with the NCAA and had recently investigated him. Thought Tyndall did a nice job his one year.

Good thing Dan's busy gettin us some new playaz. Get us that Thorne in our side.
