Week #4 - Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

In both polls out this afternoon, the A-10 has no teams ranked in the Top 25. In the AP poll, both Temple and St. Joe's received votes. In the USA Today poll, Butler and St. Joe's received votes.

The A-10 is ranked #5 on RPI just ahead of the ACC. URI's RPI has risen to #164, ahead of three other A-10 schools - Fordham, Duquesne, and GW.

Slim pickings in Monday night action:

Mt. St. Mary's at George Washington.

East Carolina at Georgia State. A double hit in that we get to see Georgia State in action and also see how Akeem Richmond performs for ECU.

Norfolk State at Morehead State.

Towson at Loyola (MD).

So little respect for the A10 teams. It takes so much more for a non-Big6 conf team to get into the Top 25 polls. So many Big6 teams in the polls before New Years should not be there or shouldn't be rated so high.

UCLA lost at home to Cal Poly and is still 24 in the coaches poll. Ridiculous.

Wagner loses to Albany, 66-63. They've now lost half as many games (3) as they did all of last season (6).

In a bad loss for the A-10, GW lost at home to forecasted NEC bottom feeder Mt. St. Mary's, 65-56.

Also, Norfolk State lost to Morehead State, 73-67. NSU has now lost five of their last six games.

Visiting East Carolina was victorious over Georgia State, 62-53. Akeem Richmond did not have a good night, played only 10 minutes, scored 3 points on 1-4 on treys and had one turnover.

I think we are going to beat more teams in A10 play than we think. This team will be battle tested, and the defense they are playing against good teams will be very tough for the bottom half of the A10. A 7-9 or even 8-8 A10 record is very possible.

In another game last night, Loyola (MD) pushed its record to 6-1 with a 65-53 win over Towson. The Greyhounds led throughout the contest.

I think our OOC schedule is harder or the same as the A10 slate. There are a elite and good teams (VCU, Butler, Stl, Joes, X) but tell me that we won't be able to hang with them having gone through this OOC and hanging with the teams that we've hung with.

I still don't hate my 16-13 prediction

Slim action on this Tuesday. One highlight of this evening’s action is the opening of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge with several games, with one involving a URI opponent.

Iowa at Virginia Tech.

Other games:

Vermont at Harvard.

Hanover at Butler.

Holy Cross at Providence.

Virginia Tech remains unbeaten as the Hokies easily whip Iowa, 95-79 in a ACC/Big Ten Challenge game. Erick Green who poured in 25 points against URI, scored 24 against the Hawkeyes. VT's other guard, Robert Brown, put in 18 points.

In a mild surprise, Vermont beat host Harvard, 85-78. Vermont was ahead most of the way and they will bring a 4-1 record into the Ryan Center on Saturday.

Wonder how long VT goes undefeated. I think they've had good fortune with their schedule so far.

Vermont is an interesting story. We have to beat them.

Vermont is picked to win their conference. The announcers kept talking about how they shouldn't be hitting their outside shots... but then they kept hitting them. Not a lot of defense happening out there tonight, as both teams shot over 50%. Hare could have a game against this team. Vermont's center (Crenca) is out with a back injury, but I'm not sure for how long. Should be a win, but I'm not counting on anything.

Scary moment happening in the South Caroline-St. John's game right now. Brenton Williams down, stretcher out. It looks like maybe a head or neck injury.

I watched Seton Hall-LSU.
SH had a 16 point lead, and proceeded to have
more turnovers than any team in the history of
the universe.
Just losing the ball once on FOUR straight trips.
They lost. Looked like one of Baron's teams in late Feberuary.

Pecora at Fordham has to be seen as a major disappointment. Another loss to Manhattan and definitely no light at the end of the tunnel there. This is Year 3 I believe, and it looks like another 5-6 win season on Rose Hill. Cherish the Hurleys!!!!

Watched Auburn lose to Depaul at home.
Auburn had the lead and lost it, despite 54%
FT shooting by Depaul.
Sound familiar?

Wow, and NIU has an outright scoring explosion in the first 5 mins of the second half: 10 pts, for a total game tally of 15 so far.

Just 5 FG scored by NIU and 5 FT.

The A-10 went 10-3 in yesterday's games. The losses were UMass falling at home to ACC Miami, 75-62, Fordham lost at Harvard, 73-64, and St. Joe's was annihilated at Creighton, 80-51, as the Hawks obviously bore the brunt of a Creighton rebound after their upset by Boise State.

In a notable A-10 win, Charlotte moved its record to 7-0 with an easy 76-64 win over previously unbeaten East Carolina. Akeem Richmond played only 9 minutes for ECU, was 0-4 on treys and scored two points.

Also, in a close contest, Virginia Tech came back in second half to upset #15 Oklahoma State, 81-71 to remain unbeaten at 7-0.
