Seems like Dan wasn't happy with some players:
“We need our older players to play better,” Hurley said. “Our older players were not good today. They gave us next to nothing. They’ve got to play better.”

Let's hope he was only talking about Gil and not TJ, given the circumstances.

Juniors and seniors didn't really show up. I think it's pretty clear how Dan feels about TJ , but if you need more, here are some quotes from last night-

What a dick.

Not really, just working on not letting the opinions of insignificant assholes bother me. You want to know what Dan's really like, ask the people who work with and play for him or have in the past.

I wonder if this year is the beginning of a run where we can't break through VCU/Dayton.

We used to be owned by Temple/Xavier 2005-2010

We all assume always "but next year!" I'm sure Shaka Smart and Miller plan on winning again next year.

I need a 4 game winning streak like I need more cowbell.

That seems premature. Please consider the recent culture and success of those programs. Of course they're likely to keep recruiting well and winning. Things are just getting started in that way at Rhode Island. I know Dayton has little depth, but every player they do have is high quality and the level of a true Dayton player. I know I'm defensive of the older classes on this Rhode Island roster, but it doesn't mean I'm ignoring the reality. Because of the recent past and that situation the Rams are still catching up. The speed with which they are doing so should be nothing but encouraging.

Dayton may be even better next year, even with losing Sibert. We'll obviously be better too, but still, Dayton will be scary.

I haven't looked, but I'm guessing that both VCU and Dayton have highly rated recruiting classes coming in? How about Davidson? We will be very good next year, but these teams will still be very difficult to beat. But, we should be right there with the best of the best of the A10.

Hurley on TJ's 3rd and 4th fouls:

“Jared was in foul trouble,” Hurley said. “The sequence of events with T.J. picking up his third and fourth fouls were absolutely a joke and absurd.”

Hell, we beat Dayton with a 8 win team!
We beat their Elite 8 team, badly, last year.
VCU losses some significant players.
We have firepower coming in for next year.
I'm confident of the future of the program.
Now, if we could just beat St. Joe's..........

Yeah sort of the point. I am one of the people that expects us to win/have a chance to win every game. AND that goes for every year, to include the last 5. Extremely optomistic.

After such a long time of expecting to break through, pointing out we can be on the same road. Nothing guaranteed.

The way Gil has wilted down the stretch makes me wish the staff put more effort into coming up with a better "plan A"(starting 5).

I have a feeling that we will have a strong contingent in Brooklyn. Our guys feed off it. WE WIN! Boom we finally break out of the Bermuda Triangle.

Gilvydas has not had a good season overall.
Let's stop expecting what's not going to happen.
He has a role on this team, and he needs to step up,
or be relegated to the bench.
TJ has taken the lion's share of the minutes, until last night.
He and Terrell combined for only 34 minutes, which hurt.
It always comes down to fouls.
These put our best players on the bench and the opponent
on the free throw line.
Neither are good events.
Dan's verbal shootouts with refs haven't helped that situation, either.
If we can keep our players on the floor, we can beat anyone.
The fouls built up in the last several games is concerning, to say the least.

Agree, Billy. Sounds like it's all speculation at this point anyway. I have to admit - it was kind of refreshing to read "throw stuff at a wall" coaching rumors that didn't involve Hurley for once. It's not just URI fans that have to deal with this nonsense, for sure.

I don't plan on reading that article listed above here that seems to imply that we were intimidated by the crowd. There are a lot of reasons we lose on the road. I don't recall (ever) it being because of the crowd. One thing we have always been is road-tough.

When I read the quote from Dan about older players, I immediately thought he was referring to our bench. Our starters may be young, but our bench isn't. And they're all coming back next year. That puts added pressure on the starters to play well.

As for the league, I want them all to improve. I want to beat them when they're good, not because they're having an off year.

The way that the bracket is set up having a 3 or 4 seed isn't the worst thing in the world. If there's an upset in round 2 and the 12/13 seed upsets the 5 seed (if we're seeded 4th) or the 11/14 seed upsets the 6 seed (if we're seeded 3rd) then we'd have an opportunity to play a low seeded team coming off back to back games with no rest. Gotta focus on the positives.

Absolutely. There are (maybe) 5-10 jobs that are not stepping stone jobs. UNC, Kentucky, etc. And even then, the NBA can come and dangle big money without the recruiting headache. There was a reason you didn't hear Baron rumors the last number of years. Just find a guy who will leave the program better off than where he found it. We can all hope to be VCU or Gonzaga but Shaka makes a ton of money. Mark Few does. It will be up to Rhody to pay him. It's hard to keep a guy who is successful when the Virginia Techs of the world can throw $2.5 mill/year at a new coach.

For the umteenth time, how much money did Dan make coaching and teaching history
for nine years at St. Benedict's?
How much money did Bob Sr. turn down over the years to stay at little
rundown St. Anthony?
How much money did Bobby make being an assistant at Wagner and URI?
The Hurley's are not the typical money chasers.
The record clearly shows that.

Hey, you might be right. I hope you are. But, what were his D-1 coaching options his first eight years at St. Bs? Why did he leave for Wagner? Why did he leave Wagner? Do you think Bobby is going to be at Buffalo for ever (side note: great job by him this year..RPI of 30). Guys like the old man are the massive exception in hoops and life (just read he was sweeping the floor while the JV team was playing...how great is that?) If you are CEO of D'Angelos, you take the McDonald's gig, and then you take the General Electric gig. And I would think he would want to get his assistants paid at some point, too. I don't want to go down this rabbit hole again. Do we really know at the end of the day? I just wanted to echo ace's thought. It's not a bad thing when other programs start putting him on a short list.

Just back from Disney and was able to only see the first half of the game before boarding the plane. JetBlue is nice to offer free tv, but they don't have CBSSN so I couldn't see the end. Had to follow the score watching other games. Tough loss, but these are games where senior leadership and experience should take you through. We have up and down upperclassmen, so games like these are happening this year. As the core four grow into senior leaders, we should hope these games happen less often. St Joes is big this weekend. Let's send Gil and TJ off with a win and a tournament bye!

Not to get into another conversation about Hurley staying or not, as I've already given my thoughts on that. Hurley's already chosen a slightly different path in coaching when he went to St. Benedict's after 4 years coaching at Rutgers, and the reasons were personal/family related. At St. Benedict's, he turned down, at the least, an assistant job at Pitt and a head coach position at Marist.

I was at the game saturday, sat right behind Bill Murray. Very nice guy. Dan has toned it down some with the officals. But that isn't saying much at all. I remember going his first year with him and Bobby together. That was a show. To say the very least.

Anything can happen in Brooklyn. Its amazing how close we could of came to winning the regular season. Really had VCU, Davidson, Umass and St Joes all dead to rice. Just couldn't close them out. Split those two, we are right there. But at the same time the two wins @fordham we stole, and even lasalle saturday. They had every chance in the world to take that game from us late.

21-8 if we can win saturday. Would be great. I think everyone would of took that. But of course the chance we had at a atlarge got alot of ppls hopes up. Including myself.

I know alot of ppl hate the NIT. But I don't and I think for URI it would be a very good thing. Gil, TJ have never got the chance at post season play. It can only help our younger guys. If we win a game or two in Brooklyn could be looking at #2 seed. Which could mean 1-2 home games. A trip to MSG would be pretty nice. But like everyone else Im all in with brooklyn. Hell it will be great to see them possibly play on selection sunday and steal a bid.

I think the NIT def helped SMU this season. For a team like GW I would have a different outlook. They are older and had real expectations of making the NCAAs this season.

The thing with NIT is that the casual fans will not be motivated to go (I could be wrong with this team though). We've been to what, 4 NIT's in the last decade? But we haven't been relevant since 99 nationally. NIT is great for a young team like this one. So it's not a negative. NIT with a senior laden team is a negative. And the CBI should be summarily rejected by URI unless we are starting 5 freshman.

Holton, 8 ppg, 6.1 rpg, and 0.9 blocks.
No big deal.

The NIT is a shitty tournament, seriously.
If you want to extend the season for a team that may have
hit the wall, fine.
We'll have poor crowds, because we probably would play some
lesser program for the first round, assuming we get a high seed.
Dan will be pissed that we had a lousy turnout.
I'll be there, but, sorry, I can't get very excited at the prospect.

I'm having fun slashing up that Grant idiot on Twitter. This guy is short a few

Now that I have a break at work, can finally post some thoughts on last night.

Did anyone notice how well Dayton executed in half-court sets? Too many times to count, EVERY guy on the Flyers touched the ball. They spaced out the floor which made it hard for anyone to help defensively without leaving their man wide open. That is the sign of a well coached team, and one that looked and was the better team last night. On the flip side, I counted 3 possessions of ours where EC and only EC touched the ball. That isn't an offense. It's infuriating to see him continue to put his head down and dribble around when he has a very capable team around him. I'm sure I'll get ripped for criticizing EC, but man that stuck out like a sore thumb last night, the contrasts in offenses between us and Dayton.

Still have high hopes for Brooklyn, although Dayton is the team I no longer want to face. Those 6-7 guys play so well together and with such fluiditiy. We will be that type of team next year/2017, but like everyone else has said, the consistency just isn't there offensively for us yet. Yet.

Fact is, we struck out every time we faced a tournament caliber team, and that's fine. The NIT is great for a young team. I'll enjoy every second of it if we end up there (hope we end up higher). Great learning experiences for our guys, but still a year away from BEING the tournament caliber team. Let's support the seniors on Saturday, and end the year with a W!
