A Former Rhody Ram Has Written a Book!
John Fultz played here from 1967-1971.
He was NE Player of The Year, when that meant something.
He averaged over 20 ppg and once blitzed UConn for 47 points.
Great shooter, and clutch player, who was drafted by the LA Lakers.
He went on to be a huge star in Europe. He currently lives in
Naples, Italy, and his book originally was in Italian. Sounds like he was pretty wild.
I wonder if he ever met Steve Chubin. Sounds like kindred spirits.
Here's some more about it:
"Together with AirJordan , Kobe, King James, and Connie Hawkens, Julius "Dr.J" Erving is forever with them in the TOP 5 of high-flying artists! My memorable encounters with him at UMass and URI are in my book:
this is a review: 'From the Rhody Rams to the L.A. Lakers to the European champions, John Leslie Fultz, " Cochise" for Italian fans, is a psychedelic author who writes as creatively as he played. His encounters with Julius “Dr. J” Erving, experiences with Lakers, the European hoop scene, escapades with John Belushi while embracing the hippie generation’s far-out principles, are all revealed in a page-turning literary adventure! “Where time is lost and truth begins, the chains are finally broken,”- in this couplet from his poem “the Fearless Falcon” he expresses the transcendental vision of a soaring free spirit. Full of surprises, he is capable of conveying the courageous attitude of an era which continues to influence society today. Explore mind expanding experiences that climax in the soul cleansing effects of meditation. John’s work shines with the vibrant energies of enlightenment!' "

Wow that sounds really interesting! From URI to LA to Italy to play basketball all the while being a free spirited expressive person with money. I'm sure his experiences have been quite fruitful.
Might have to check that out. Artistic athletes.

I started at URI in 1970 and Fultz had graduated by then I think.

Thanks, good stuff Rod.
I found this site that includes a 10 minute interview with John. He speaks Italian throughout the interview but it is interesting nonetheless.
I'm going to read the book as soon as I can get my hands on it

Re: A Former Rhody Ram Has Written a Book!
He was a terrific player for URI.
I'm buying the book, for sure.
He played with Claude English, Nate Adger among others,.
He began under Ernie Calverley 1967-68, and ended his career with two years under
Tom Carmody.
This from GoRhody.com
"JOHN FULTZ '71 was a standout basketball player under coach Tom Carmody at Rhode Island from 1968-70. He was fifth on the Rams all-time scoring list with 1,834 points at the time of his induction. He was eighth and tenth in the Rhody record book for points in a season with 576 in 1968-69 and 566 in 1969-70, respectively. Fultz was also one of URI's all-time great rebounders, ranking eighth in career rebounds at the time of his induction and third and eighth for a season with 302 in 1969-70 and 257 in 1968-69, respectively."

If I recall correctly, he like Dennis McGovern, would have had a bundle more points, if the three was in effect then....

Re: A Former Rhody Ram Has Written a Book!
Ditto for Steve Rowell.
URI a string of high scoring, good shooting forwards, then.
McGovern shot 54% one year, and 52.5% for his career! Fultz and Rowell were terrific
long range bombers.
There should be a separate set of records for the post 3 point era.
Fultz' 46 vs, UConn, could easily have been 55 or more with the 3 point line.
Someone with a lot of time on his hands, went back over Pete Maravich's career at LSU,
and said he'd have averaged 57 ppg instead of 44, if he had the 3 point line.
The other thing is, career points. Somebody with a 16 ppg could score more than a 20 ppg
player, due to the extended amount of games played.
There was a 26 game standard regular season schedule until the 80's.
The ppg average and rebounds pg average should be what counts, not totals.

Re: A Former Rhody Ram Has Written a Book!
Woodward's book is a must for all Ram followers, to learn
that there was a lot of great basketball played at URI before
the Ryan Center existed.
Great photos of Lippett and Rodman Hall, as well as a photographic
record of Rhody players and coaches through the years.
Low point of the book is a really petty snub of Jim Harrick, whose only mention is a listing
in the 1997-98 team picture.
Ridiculous.

Re: A Former Rhody Ram Has Written a Book!
My uncle was a frat brother of John Fultz and I came down to Kingston to watch a game. I stayed the night at Phi Mu, which was quite an experience when you're 10 years old. The next day, before leaving, I insisted on meeting Fultz. So my uncle took me to the decks where everybody slept and he woke him up so I could meet him.

I remember reading about Fultz and his European career. He played there when fewer Americabs went that route. Had no idea of his wild life until now.

Re: A Former Rhody Ram Has Written a Book!
Not something the Blojo would ever point out.
I mean, how many books are written by and about a URI
former player?
I guess Bunky could write about "The mean streets of Napoli"......
So, '81, was Fultzy glad to see you after you uncle woke him up?
Phi Mu Delta was the big jock frat, then.
Back then, as it was with most athletes, we knew very little about them
off the court.
Today, we know what they ate for breakfast, practically.

My first ram game at keaney was in 67 with Stephenson, Johnson and fultz. John was a complete player. He is known for his offense, but there was a home game against American who had a 7 ft center (name rod) and he helped shut him down for a 10 pt. victory. Thanks john for some glorious ram victories. For you truly old timers like me, Al bud Hazard was phi mu

Re: A Former Rhody Ram Has Written a Book!
Neil! You are great.
I was at that game. The 7 footer for American U was Arthur Beatty.
I remember Big Step wearing him down and dominating him by the end of the game.
Beatty once had 33 rebounds against a pretty good Lasalle team!
Fultz's game was kind of a poor man's Doug McDermott. Great range,
but could take it and post up people, too. Very good rebounder.
Who knew he was so popular a player in Italy? I'm happy to have found out.

Rod, sorry I didn't respond yesterday. I was away from the board. Fultz was fine when we woke him up and I think he gave me an autograph. My uncle was a well respected brother who was President either that year or the next. Neil- Bud Hazard was a very cool guy and a good friend of my uncle.

Re: A Former Rhody Ram Has Written a Book!
At the risk of bursting a few bubbles, the Phi Mu Delta of the mid 60's had it's "Animal House" moments, but in fact had a mixture of majors, national origins, races and religions. Yes, we had Ron Rothstien, Frank Nightengale, Don Kaul, Mike Fitzgerald, and the ever free spirit Steve Chubin. Fitzgerald was actually an Engineering major and Frank and Don were insurance majors. We also had football captains Alan Arbuse, Joe Buesing and Joe DeFalco. All were successful coaches and Joe D. was actually mayor of Hackensack New Jersey. There were also track and scoccer captains. Add to that Presidents and members of Blue Key, Sachem Members, and class officers and just regular students and you had a place that was far from just a jock house. In fact in 1965, Phi Mu won the overall trophy which included academics, intermurals and campus participation. That all being said, we raised our share of hell. Like most fraternities of that era, if we did some of those antics today, we'd probably be doing an 8 to 10 year stretch in Shawshank Prison!
As others have noted things did go to hell in a handbasket in the 1980' s and the house was thrown off campus. There is a very strong Alumni Organization and each year over 150 show up for our annual golf tournament and an additional 30 or so for the lunch. We also had a large turnout when our brother Charlie Yaghoobian was inducted into the ROTC Hall of Fame. Clarlie was a Marine Lt. killed in action in Vietnam. Another of our brothers is Lt. General Leon LaPort - another Hall of Fame member.

No problem - my memory does the same thing at times. I did get a laugh about the comments on Steve Chubin. The guy was amazing - smart - crazy - and could shoot the lights out. He was the envy of many of us - as he had a way with members of the opposite sex. Came back from his "exile" year with an amazing "sense of the court". He was a ledgend in the true sense of the word!

Re: A Former Rhody Ram Has Written a Book!
Chubin could drive into a crowd of players and somehow
get the shot off (usually it went in) and if not, he has all the free throw
attempt records at URI.
A writer in Oklahoma City compared him to Tarzan.
He wasn't a great deep shooter like McGovern, but had a nice mid range jumper.
Really hard nosed player. Had some pretty good success in the old ABA, too.

One of my favorite memories as a student was that NIT game against Seton Hall. I was a student intern in the athletics media relations office and working the scorers table at the game. Got in major trouble for hopping the scorers table and storming the court when Dawan hit that shot. So worth it.

You can do well in Europe in a good league. There are lots of opportunities beyond the NBA for guys who can't get there. There are also some scary leagues in violent areas, where paychecks bounce and fans shoot fireworks in the arenas. Dawan sounds like he's in a good league.

Saw Fultzy play at the Cage and Keaney. Where did Fultzy come from and connect with Dr. J. John was well-suited to the half court style of play popular at the time. It only makes sense for a free-spirit to have ghost writers.
Basketball was a much different game back in the 60s - no shot clock, no 3 pointers, no dunking, freshman basketball, good technical basketball. Some teams would run the 4 corner offense until they got fouled. You had to have some purist in you to really enjoy these games.

Fultz was from Framingham, MA. Somehow, he played against Dr. J in the NY playgrounds,
before Dr.J went to UMass.
Not sure he had a ghost writer. He writes poetry, too. Pretty bright guy.
The four corners is what brought the shot clock into the game. Dean Smith dreamed that up,
and others copied it.
UConn did it in their second game of Fultz's senior year, to stop him. The score was like 34-31,
URI. That stuff killed player's averages, too.
Here's a picture of John and his daughter. He has a son, who plays pro ball in Italy.

If I'm not mistaken, PC tried it too.

The four corners was deadly. The shot clock was a good innovation. The four corners gave weak offenses a chance to hang in against better opponents. Not fun to watch. URI didn't use it much in my time. Though I believe Claude empoyed it against PC when Gilson was playing.

Do you remember pictures of Maryland players reading newspapers,
while UNC played their boring 4 corners garbage?
Just made a mockery of the game.
