Ok...if people don't understand a word, look it up. Plain and simple. If some people are content to be ignorant, and want to rant over terms they don't understand then they're only making themselves look like ignorant fools. There's nothing wrong with not knowing something.
It's up to each individual to choose whether they are willing to learn more & educate themselves or whether or not they are content to be a lazy ignorant malcontent. This, in my opinion, does not mean we as individuals should have to change our words or dumb ourselves down, just because someone else may not a have a complete understanding of the english language.

Ps - Nice joke Sean...got a little chuckle. Well timed. Bravo.

TP, the word itself is not offensive, don't be one of those people who are trying to take our words away. The word choice is questionable, a half a dozen other words could work there, so I do see your point and your request was respectful, but request denied. :P

When I checked into our beloved Keaney Blue Web Site where we hash-out all things URI basketball, I was perplexed to see that this thread that discusses the team’s free-throw woes had evolved into an etymological debate. For anyone who might care, the origin of the word "Niggardly" comes from Norse, "Nigla (c.1300)" meaning “petty".

TP, I appreciate all the effort you put into this board. However as an alumni I won’t, even in this miniscule way, fuel URI’s undeserved reputation as a ‘safety school’ by, you know, like, man, you know, like, by dumbing it down man. Perhaps the team will shoot 76% + from the free throw line the remainder of the season and this entire thread will fade into oblivion?

We have game thread disintegrating into people's reaction to a dunk.
It's funny at first, but then the whole thread gets hijacked and it's no longer
about the game itself.
A thread previewing the PC game turns into "my dad can beat up your dad" quality.
This gets hijacked by an attempt at being politically correct.
I've probably hijacked a few threads in my time here, too. It happens.

Yeah. It pretty much happens on every board on the Internet, but I understand that this is some people's only real message board they frequent, so they don't have a real frame of reference for this.

Post was in response to post on previous page. Ramulous's humor was well received. I laughed at the whole "turning balls over".
My apologies for any thread high jacking.

Now how about them Rams and the ever improving free throw shooting...
Rhody will need to be on their "A" game at the line. Brown as a team is shooting 73% from the line with 4 guys shooting 85% from the line. If Brown keeps the game close like they did against PC, winning the free throw battle down the stretch is going to be a tough task.

Edited: Added Free Throw comments to continue thread.

We earned 35 trips to the line and made 19! Missed 8 of the last 10! Coach Hurley should not have to be diagraming how to shoot free throws to a D1 ball player with 40 seconds left and the game on the line. Let’s see, as I remember it the free-throw line distance from point on the floor directly below the backboard is fifteen feet and the height of the rim remains at 10 feet.

After a performance like last nights', a coach like Herb Brooks (think 1980) would have had no qualms bringing this team out after the press conference to shoot free throws until two in the morning then had them back out on the court for more of the same at 7:00 am. Something has to be done to get this team to hit 70% plus or we will only aspire to make the NIT for the foreseeable future.

After last night...barf!
I'll have to email Dan some other free throw drill.

No offence to our coaching staff and your suggestions Rod, but perhaps it’s time to bring in a free throw guru to help out with our dilemma.
Maybe we could coax Virgil Sweet out of retirement down in Florida or fly Jimmy over from Italy?

well said blueram...i would much rather have had Dan brought the team back out last night to practice ball handling and perimeter defense. If we didnt turn it over a ton and allow their guards to take us off the dribble there wouldn't have been meaningful foul shots down the stretch. The game would have been a 15-20 pt game and FTs would have been meaningless.

Sometimes wins aren't easy. For many reasons. Free throws, foul trouble, zone defenses. The bottom line is we won. Maybe it hasn't hit many yet. We are at the top of the A10 and from here on out we are going to get the best from every team. They want to prove something. We've been in those teams shoes for a decade. Trying to beat the best. Right now we are among the best. They are coming at us. It's unfamiliar to many. Maybe that's why the RC is like a morgue sometimes. They are waiting for disaster to happen. I prefer to rejoice that we have a team that can play and a coach who knows what the hell he is doing.

We shot a lot of FTs due it being a close game. All I am saying is if we are up 10-15 in the last few minutes they aren't fouling, they have conceded the win. Prior to the last 5 minutes we were shooting around 70% from the line.

Higher math tell me we shot 54% from the free throw line. If we shoot free throws at that level against the elite teams in the A-10 we will not win. Let’s test my theory next Tuesday.

Our 1-14, 7.1% shooting from three point land is another discussion entirely.

FWIW I was on my feet for the last five minutes of the agony of a game last night and have missed one home game (illness) during the last six years including a death-defying drive during the blizzard of three years ago so I would classify myself as a fan (and yes my wife has questioned my sanity). This team has potential but as coach Hurley stated last night we are not there yet. A three point win over Fordham at home is not a reason for basketball euphoria.

We have more close games against better teams coming up.

We are of course much better than we looked last night.

But really, how good are we? Are we good enough to beat any of the top 4? Can we beat the others who are mid pack, especially in road games?

I need to be convinced. I need to see results. We haven't seen it yet.

FT shooting is going to be huge. Many other aspects of the game as well.

I am waiting, not totally confident.

We scored 42 points in the second half against the same zone. So something was working after a halftime adjustment.

We ran a ton of wrinkles and plays to free EC. Our guards used dribble penetration to create openings. Beating a zone is more execution than it is design. It all starts at PG.

True, guys.

What we all want, is Jarvis to become [and fast] the URI version of UConn's Boatright and Napier, and PC's Cotton and Dunn. Or the next Jiggy and Tyson.

I know that's basically impossible to do as a freshman, and not realistic no matter how talented JG is.

and maybe Dan's approach is right all along to bring him along as he has. Don't want to put unrealistic expectations out there for him either.

I was impressed with the St Louis game when Garrett hit 4-4 Free Throws and all 4 were solid, net only type baskets. Then today I was impressed when he hit 2 three point shots - first time all year he has made 2 in a game. He was more looking for the shot today and seemed to be more confident. If he can start to become a threat from 3 for this team then that would be great knowing we are now only 3 games into a long 18 game A10 Season PLUS Tournament. A lot of Conference Basketball yet to be played.

We want him to develop fast, but it just doesn't happen that often with PG's.

We're going to need his ball handling big time against VCU. Him and TJ should start and play as much as possible.

I know Dan has put Biggie and JG together a lot lately, but I think Biggie will get his pocket picked way too many times by havoc.

Going to be a lot of passing drills the next couple of days.

I think this is somewhat correct, but it's also probably true that URI's personnel makes options for attacking the zone tougher. If you have good 3-point shooters that can space the floor, it's way easier to kill a zone then swinging it around and working it in and out of the low and high posts.

Agreed SG, there are generally 4 ways to attack a zone - perimeter shooting, penetrating the gaps, the foul line and the corner J. We have to excel at the last 3 b/c we aren't turning into Davidson from the outside any time soon. I think at times this year against zones our guards have played tentative and have moved the ball crisply around the perimeter, but looking afraid to attack the gaps. In the second half EC, Jared and Jarvis did a MUCH better job of it. Case in point when EC hit the gap drew a defender and dropped it off to Hassy for a slam. TJ splitting the gap to dump down for a Hassy dunk. Jarvis beating the gap on his floater. None of that was happening in the first half.

Jarvis needs to shoot the 3 more often against a zone similar to what they faced yesterday. He had more than a few open looks that he has to try to take advantage of the open space. We all believe he is a better shooter than what his stats show after only 14 games so keep shooting. His 3 point % is probably pretty good after you back out his first 10 or 12 attempts.

Poor foul shooting is only one problem our players have.
Even more important is the passing to the open man.
Hassan is a work horse getting open and not getting the ball.
Hassan does great despite this .
EC's passing to the open man would better his game big time and allow him less contested shots
Catch and shooting in one motion when open is a rare, it seems our guards would rather force shots.
Lack of consistent inside outside passing
I feel for the 4 big men we have they will not improve under this coaching staff
And for the above reasons we have to rely on lots of luck to win some games.
