Game #6: Georgia Tech Yellowjackets - ESPNU - GameDay!!

Unread post by section(105) »

Few general themes from their message board today; underachieved in Classic, especially against Marquette, having trouble shooting the three, not high on Coach Brian Gregory, feeling they will not get better than previous years under Gregory......nothing like beating Brian Gregory teams.......Asuming they get past Rider.....

GT isn't overly tall but there 2 bigs Cox and Mitchell are wide and strong. Definitely a game i think we see 12-15 minutes for Earl as I think we will need his size and physicality to match their bigs. If we play under control and don't force we should win this gam by 9-12 points.

We should beat this team easily.

Lost to a stiff, and barely beat one.

Hope the team doesn't read this post however.

We're not yet good enough to just roll the balls out and win.

Would have liked to have played Michigan State. They look very beatable.

Of course we thought Kansas was too, but wait.....

Not sure how anyone who's watched this team play can say we should beat anyone easily, nevermind a team from the ACC.
Georgia Tech is being picked anywhere from 7th to 9th in preseason ACC polls, a conference much stronger and deeper than the A10.
We have yet to show any offensive consistency and were working 2 freshman into a very young lineup. I would think this game is a tossup and the line will likely reflect that.

I'll agree to disagree with you there Rambone. Sparty is my 1B team after Rhody with family going to school in East Lansing. I've watched every one of their games this year as well, and I have been so impressed with their ball movement and shooting. In comparison to our game today, they held Santa Clara to 14 in the first half. So quick in transition and don't even have a full team yet with injuries. I think they'd present a myriad of problems for Rhody, especially in the half court. Also, the game would be won/lost in transition, an area that I think Rhody can exploit weaker teams in but haven't yet. Can definitely see us hanging with them, but we aren't quite ready to beat the elite teams yet. Not enough consistency offensively, from what I've seen.

I don't know. Looking at the line from the Rider game tonight, GT can't shoot 2's or 3's, they rebound very well, but they also play a lot of one on one, with 5 assists on 22 made baskets.

In other words, a lot like us, but against a bad team like Rider [yes Santa Clara isn't that good but they are better than Rider] that's pretty putrid. GT had a big physical advantage. They won't against us.

If we play solid D and hold our own on the boards, we should be OK. The difference will be if we can play some cohesive offense and make a decent percentage from the floor.

We don't have to have our A game, is what I'm saying. Our B game should do the trick.

Maybe we can press them a little also. I'm wondering when Dan is going to start playing that style.

I also think Dan outcoaches Gregory in this one.

Gregory is from the Baron/Hewitt/Kellogg school of coaching. In other words, they have good athletes playing helter skelter undisciplined basketball.

Honestly..... have you seen Georgia Tech play yet? or Rider for that matter? I'm guessing no, Rider to me looks much better than Santa Clara and there's absolutely no way we beat Georgia Tech with anything less than our "A" game.

I lived in the ATL for a bit. I think we can beat G Tech, their fans are all wrapped up in football as it is. Not only that, they are apathetic about non-SEC teams down there anyway in the southeast.

Gerogia Tech beat Georgia and that's pretty impressive. Georgia is expected to be good this year.
I have a lot of faith in our defense though and we got EC Matthews and Jared Terrell and they don't.

Sunday Games will be:
7th Place 10:30am Rider vs Santa Clara
1st Place 1:00pm Kansas vs Michigan State
3rd Place 4:00pm Marquette vs Tennessee
5th Place 6:30pm URI vs Georgia Tech

1 Ticket gets entry into all 4 games on Sunday whereas past two days there have been separate sessions passes/tickets (afternoon and night)
Many Michigan State and Kansas fans were seeking passes to Sunday's games today
Should be a full arena at 1pm for the Kansas - Michigan State match up. There had been talk of the Championship being at either 1pm or 4pm - not sure how they decided 1pm but I believe it is heavily related to Television.
Smaller crowd obviously for Marquette and Tennessee as I doubt Michigan State or Kansas fans will hang around after their game. Will probably literally "go to Disneyworld".
Crowd for URI and Georgia Tech should be small but this is a very, very important game for both URI and Georgia Tech as one team will go home 1-2 and one team 2-1. Great opportunity for URI to play a ACC Team on a neutral court. Rhody has more fans in Orlando than Georgia Tech does.

For all the talk that Georgia Tech is so-so, etc., and URI needs to just play like this or that for a win -- THINK AGAIN.
URI ALWAYS NEEDS TO BRING ITS "A" GAME!!!!!! Nothing can ever be taken for granted, this team isn't talented enough, nor would Coach Hurley allow it.
I watched Georgia Tech yesterday….Are they absolutely skilled? No. Are they deadly from the outside? No. Are they this or that? No? But, they are big, strong and can score points in the paint off of misses. If the line on this game is more than 3 points either way I'd be shocked….

Opportunity for a big win here giving us momentum for smu. We caught kansas on their best shooting night of the season. Glad we spanked sc on ESPN so people know we can play. Gt has that Georgia win but we have one better, I say we win in a single digit game. Go Rams

Our team will get better every game. Terrell and EC will soon be a dynamic and feared back court, solid PG play is the key for me. Yesterday is a case in point, hard to run great sets and execute even with gifted guys off the ball if your PG is not leading it. Best effort for Biggie in Keaney blue. Hass and Gil have to stay consistent and on the floor, have to be happy with the contributions of TJ and Reischel off the bench thus far. Rams sting the Jackets, by 6.

We can play the "D". Our forecourt is putting up fantastic "pps" numbers. The backcourt is not consistently there yet.....Maybe we will get a good carryover from the Santa Clara game?

This game is very big for us, lose and we are staring at 4-4 before our next home game.
None of the top A10 teams have been impressive so far and that bodes well for us. If we continue to improve every game and stay away from significant injury, we'll be in good shape come conference play.

They are going to pound the ball inside and they get after it on the offensive glass. Gil has to stay out of foul trouble. No stupid reach in fouls Gil. Watson will loom large. It would not surprise me to see Ify gets some minutes in the first half this game.

If we limit our turnovers and crash the boards on the defensive end we should win.

I'd also like to see Martin be more involved with the
offense.
He's been a non factor in both games. The first game was foul trouble.
He kind of gets a pass on the Kansas game. What about little Santa Clara?
As Tim Welsh pointed out, he always passes the ball back instead of making
a move to the hoop.
He needs to be more than an occasional put back guy on offense.
Watson needs to see more minutes. Other than free throws, I don't get
the reluctance to give him more time.
He's very active out there, and plays hard.

Bang and get rebounds? sounds like iffy's bag.

I want to see them go right to Gil and him get THEIR guys in foul trouble.

Gil was a menace for Kansas bigs, which means he will be a menace for the rest of the bigs we play.

Have to involve him a lot and give him the reps/confidence. Is it me or does he seem to have the makeup of a mix between St Joes star big last year and the Kavanaugh kid for Dayton.

Need to see the same hard nose defense and a continued improvement on offense. Can't be complacent for any game going forward. One game at a time. I'm hoping for a strong start from the tip. Would love to see a huge game from Hass.

Definitely need a big inside game today. I think Georgia tech will be tough but beatable.

Just watched KU take the tourney, neither team played very well but MSU wasted every opportunity, wish we had a crack at them, our best would have beaten them today.
