ONE. DAY. MORE.
ONE. DAY. MORE.
Hit play and use for inspirational background music while you read this.
I woke up with this thought in my head today. We've literally wallowed in awfulness since April Fools Day 1999. We've been an afterthought, the butt of jokes, and literally done nothing impressive or noteworthy in the 15 years since. Hollow 20 win seasons. Moral victories. 2 pathetic excuses for coaches. Ron Petro. Wasted talent out the ass: Will Daniels. Jimmy Baron. Delroy.
"Almost." I really f#&king hate that word.
It's the perfect analogy for URI Basketball since '99. Every single person who peruses this board even casually can probably think of a dozen instances where we were "this close" to doing something, and just didn't. GW. Temple. Duke. St Joes. UMass. UNC. - I don't even have to mention any details and you just know what I'm talking about. It's pathetic. It's awful. And it's going to stop.
Tomorrow can change everything. Tomorrow we can finally stop the "almost" and actually accomplish something. It won't be the most monumental win in basketball this year. Won't be the most impressive win in URI's history. It won't even be their most impressive win for the rest of this season: but tomorrow we can go from talking about "almost," "should," "potential," and all the other trivial bullshit losers have to say because they don't have anything substantial to show...to doing something legitimate.
A win tomorrow is program changing. Make no mistake. It might not be a household basketball name. It might not be the number 1 or 5 or 10 team in the country. For URI, beating a ranked team in front of a sold out crowd in your own building will finally put to rest all the crap about what we "should be" or "could be" - and will finally signal a change in our program.
Who we are. Where we're going. We go from a joke program with a lot of "promise" to an "oh shit these guys are serious now" program over night.
I swear to Christ I will be off my rocker like I've never been before tomorrow night, and every. single. person. reading this should be as well.
If I have to go and throat punch people to get them on their feet and screaming tomorrow, I will. If someone needs to pack some God Damn blue paint and I have to put it on my face and run around like an asshole to get people up, I will. If I need to go to the student section, I will. If you only had one game to pack your metaphorical testicles and vocal chords - pack them and some spares for tomorrow.
I have full faith the guys on the court in Keaney Blue are going to have everything tomorrow and if you're reading this and you don't, I don't want to know you. Let's go change a program together. Team first and only.
TOMORROW WE'LL DISCOVER WHAT OUR GOD IN HEAVEN HAS IN STORE. ONE MORE DAWN. ONE MORE DAY. ONE. DAY. MORE.
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Re: ONE. DAY. MORE.
I look at this as a springboard game.....for the players confidence, for students' interest, for possible post season inclusion, for recruiting. The last big moment was getting Terrell. This is the next. A win gets this program rolling. This old guy will be standing and screaming.

Re: ONE. DAY. MORE.
Odd, but very little talk on here about the game on the court.
We need to keep out of foul trouble up front.
EC needs to be EC from the second semester.
Our freshman Goldust Twins in the backcourt could have
their own coming out party.
Of course, pray it doesn't come down to free throws. (but don't mention it to anyone)

Keys to the game:
-- EC needs to snap out of his funk, and especially stop the turnovers.
-- Terrell needs to stay out of foul trouble despite covering the best player.
-- URI needs to hit FTs.
-- URI needs to hit a few threes.
-- Someone other than EC needs to have a big offensive game.

Re: ONE. DAY. MORE.
I'm a little concerned after reading Hurley's comments about the type of pack it in defense that Nebraska plays. Going to need to hit some outside shots early to keep them honest. Transition game will be huge as well.rodfromcranston wrote:Odd, but very little talk on here about the game on the court.

Couldn't agree more, especially about FTs. Earl looks promising but on Sunday it was painful to watch him at the foul line.Iggy1979 wrote:Keys to the game:

Re: ONE. DAY. MORE.
Agree with Iggy....EC needs to be EC, Terrell has to have a good game covering Pettway (major challenge) and we have to knock down some threes. They aren't overly tall so I am not worried about getting beat up inside, but they play very good defense. Likely a game in the 60s, hope we are on the right side of it. Regardless I will be making the 3 hr trek to RI tomorrow afternoon, no way I miss 7K at the RC!! Go Rhody!

Re: ONE. DAY. MORE.
Will be there from NJ with my wife and my daughter who lives in Warwick now, and we will be loud. FTs FTs FTs. Got to hit them. Watched Dayton fade to UCONN today. If they had hit their early free throws the game would have been different down the stretch. It is often overlooked how much of an impact good free throw shooting has on a game in late situations. Just three or four extra points could mean a team is up a point or two instead of behind and forced to foul to gain possession. It also takes a little pressure off the team and infuses adrenaline into the players while misses help the other team emotionally.

Re: ONE. DAY. MORE.
Forever lurker here, can't think of a better time to make my first post. Terrific work Blue Man. I was semi-active on the Projo boards years back, the process after that, but being moved here was the best thing that could have happened.
I'm a 2003 grad, which meant my freshman year was Jerry D's first season. Which means that shortly after the date in 1999 that Blue Man is talking about, I got my acceptance to URI. It's been downhill (or stuck on the hill) ever since for the program. So as an active student or alum, I have literally never seen this team dance or beat a ranked opponent.
I proudly stormed the court when we beat Seton Hall in the 1st round of the NIT in '03. When I lived in NYC I'd take the train up to Rose Hill every year to watch us play Fordham and win 41-39. I made a huge scene in the Mirage sportsbook during my buddies bachelor party when Marquise beat Dayon at the buzzer (at the Ryan, not to be confused with the following season). Then was pissed at his wedding a few weeks later when we lost to UMass at home. Like all of you, I've stayed close to the goings on of the program and tomorrow is a chance to take a major step in the right direction.
A few weeks ago I was able to fly my wife (a California girl and UNLV grad, never been north of Manhattan) up to New England for a vacation, which of course included a multi-day stop in South County. All of the old houses I lived in, buildings where I took classes, a walk through the campus, a coffee milk stout, ect. After meeting all of the friendly and eccentric people in the Ocean State she said, "You guys deserve do well finally."
I know what you're thinking: "Cool story bro?" "Who the hell cares?"
But either way, I just wanted to say that I'm fired up for Saturday, will be rooting on the Rams from 3,000 miles away and will try to be more active on the boards as the season progresses. Good or bad.

Welcome, mstyles22!
We need some new-old blood on this board.
People get tired of reading the same posters, like me.
I can tell you, there's nothing like a good NCAA run,
and I'm sorry that you and so many others have not seen URI
experience one.
