Jamal Wilson‏ @Jamal1Wilson

Bobby & Danny Hurley are the most "make you wanna run through a wall for them" type of coaches I've ever experienced. Basketball junkies.

Jamal Wilson, biggest screw job by a coach, ever.
Kid had talent.
Should have transferred after his freshman season.
A real shame.

If you knew some of the shenanigans that kid pulled... but in his defense Baron's locker room had no discipline. I think he would've thrived in a more rigid program, you're right he was easily one of the most talented guys on our team.

It seemed like they were more lax on player behavior towards the end- bringing in guys like Mabry, Holton, Daniel West etc (inlcuding Wilson. Didn't Dom McKoy have some issue with a BB Gun?). Guys that had talent sure, but didn't seem to mix well. You can bring in one or two of those types of players if you have the right culture, but it is tough to win with a locker room full of them.

Bos: I wouldn't lump Wilson in with that group. He was a senior when Holton and McKoy were freshmen so he wasn't "toward the end" of Baron's tenure at URI. He was signed early by Pat Skerry and it was not a case of desperation. But, as KB says, he was far from a perfect member of the team and made lots of mistakes. But, I also agree he would've benefited from playing under someone like Hurley. Remember the chatter about him coming back to play one year for Hurley ... which was wishful thinking since he had no eligibility left.

Dan petitioned for a waiver on Wilson.
He liked him, and he could have made a difference
on that short roster in Hurley's first season.

I hope Xavier gets to stick around next season. San Antonio was a tough match-up and Memphis certainly had their share of injuries, but Munford was a legitimate piece of their line-up the entire time he was with the team. It's a good story and a credit to who he is as a professional.
They fired my guy! Joerger is out as head coach of Memphis, but it seems like a mutual decision.

Hope the new guy likes X.

Tough contract. Team has control over the player and the player has no guarantees. Hopefully X plays well and does enough to impress the incoming coach. You don't have much clout when you come in from the D league.

Somewhat related anecdote...

My officemate played ball at Boone Street against him Tuesday Night. Said all he did was shoot (and make) threes cuz he didnt want to hurt anyone on the inside. Also played one on one against him, and iffy quote "treated playing against me like an adult treats playing a 6 year old". Cheering him on when he scored on him and stuff. Came off as a really great guy.

Saw some posts about Jim Baron retiring and it made me curious about how Billy and Jimmy are doing playing together in Belgium.

Billy's averaging 16.8 PPG, playing 28.6 minutes per game.

Jimmy's averaging 15.5 PPG playing 27 minutes per game.

The other interesting thing is that their website lists Jimmy as a Point Guard and Billy as a guard.

I think it's kind of an unwritten rule that URI guys take it easy on regular Joe's in playground games. I played in a few pickup games involving players in the '70s. They were just trying to stay in shape, maybe work on a thing or two. They were nice enough to pretend we were competition.
I saw the same guys in pickup games with teammates and PC guys. Different effort completely

This is true. Very competitive! called fouls on me in pick-up games a few times and he's about twice my over-all mass. I'm positive he never felt me touch him, I was more like a breeze or whisper to him, I couldn't have altered his shot if I took off from a trampoline and he shot flat-footed. He was pissed he missed and some little dude was in his personal space haha. A side note, Murphy was the best pick-up player at that time, that guy missed NEVER! Better than Wheeler and Mobley in pick-up.

Pickup games reveal some real quirks in people.
I was playing at Brown in the late 70's against some of their players.
One was a local kid, a former All-Stater.
I stole the ball from him, and he spent the rest of the game
trash talking.
Funny as hell.

How ya' doin'?

Was it Bruce Rhodes (Hendricken) or Ray Lambert (East Providence)?

Doubt it was Rhodes....

Marvel had the best pick-up games. Anyone could walk in and play. Phil Brown and Eddie Morris were the nicest guys, who would always make it a point to make one feel welcome and be a team-mate, even though it was pick-up. Always competitive, always classy.

Brown had some really good players through the years.
Marvel Gym was a very interesting place.
I recall a Phil Brown team leading PC 19-2 and losing.
I didn't know Bruce Rhodes died. Sad to hear.

Very unfortunate, but I'm wondering if he ultimately winds up in Sacramento with Dave Joerger, who was his coach in Memphis. Could help his case that Sacramento needs guards

Fortunately for Xavier he signed a contract that takes him through 2018
and pays him 874,000 this coming season and and 1.2 million for the
next season. Kind of odd that they would give him a contract for
two more seasons and then release him two months later.

Found out Xavier's contract was only a club option
which the Grizzlies declined, so Xavier won't get the money.
Doesn't say if he will receive any compensation, but it
doesn't appear that he will other than his meager salary
of last season for his two ten day deals and $30,000 total.
Hope he catches on somewhere.

I would certainly take Munford over James Young out of the current Celtics, however with all the guys they just drafted it would be better for him to catch on elsewhere...Sacramento as previously mentioned would be a good destination.

How do you lead your team in minutes played in some games, score double digits, then fall so far that you're let go? Injuries or not to the roster, that's weird.

As Jake mentioned, the Grizzlies have pretty much flipped their coaching staff. Plus, look at how decimated their roster was at the end of the season.

I think he's still on their roster because NBA free agency hasn't started yet. I believe that's the first day teams can officially make and announce moves publicly, although from the tone of this story, it seems like teams can cut, but not re-sign, players before free agency: http://espn.go.com/blog/nba/rumors/post ... unford-out - Looks like Memphis claimed Tony Wroten off waivers from the Knicks, and had to let go of Xavier to do that.

Xavier will be playing with the lakers summer league team for the second year in a row.
He will compete at the PG spot with Jordan Clarkson and Deangelo Russell.
Like last year, it may be difficult for him to get playing time.
