The thread on Parfait Bitee had me thinking about how many former URI players were currently on college D1 coaching staffs. I quickly came up with nine players. I am sure that I am probably missing some. Feel free to help me out and add others:

Parfait Bitee | Towson | Assistant
TJ Buchanan | URI | Assistant
Eric Youncofski | URI | Assistant
Jim Christian | BC | Head
Tyson Wheeler | Fairfield | Assistant
Antonio Reynolds-Dean | Clemson | Assistant
Horace Pappy Owens | LaSalle | Assistant
Patrick Four McGlynn | LaSalle | Assistant
Carlton Silk Owens | Kennesaw State | Assistant

I'm seeing a McGlynn as a director of basketball operations at La Salle, but it's not Four

Former college assistant. Last position was New Bedford High. Stepped down last year with the intent to more closely follow his son's career at Notre Dame. Jr however got injured and sat out most of this season.

Man, Xavier has played only 20 minutes total in his time with the Bucks from January 8th til now. Keep collecting them checks through, feel great for him about that part! I think the NBA minimum is somewhere around $1.5-2 million/season so he's getting nice pay on a prorated basis.

In Larry Bird's book "Drive" he talked about how those end of the bench guys for the 80's Celtics were good enough to play more minutes for other teams, and practice is where those guys really tried to take it to the starters. If they weren't playing many minutes during the game, hell they would expend all their energy to try and win the practice battles against the superstars. Hopefully Xavier is treating the bench life like that, like many pro athletes have said in the past "you get paid to practice and the games we play for free."

For some reason I was thinking about Iffy Onyekaba yesterday. Did he ever turn up anywhere? 20 and 10 in his first game as a frosh in 20 minutes (if that). Then, almost literally, nothing else. So weird. Maybe even weirder that I was wondering what happened to him.

Good to hear. Would love a 30 for 30 short on him. What if I told you a guy who looked like he was cut from stone scored 20 and 10..........and was never heard from again?

Tyson had close to that exact story written about him. He got into 1 NBA game in his career, took 1 shot (3 pointer), and hit it.

He's a fun stat quirk of being a 1.000 career shooter

Nice article on Tommy. KMac doesn't have it right though. Duke did not end Sly's career. Sly was a sophomore in 78. He played one more year before going to the NBA. Duke ended Jiggy Williamson and Stan Wright's career.

Sly's career ended in Maryland in an NIT game in 1979. We had the ball and a two-point lead in the final seconds of regulation, and for reasons still unknown almost 40 years later, he decided to take the ball to the basket. Buck Williams (yes, that Buck Williams) stepped in and took a charge -- Sly's fifth foul -- and hit both free throws (that was how the rules worked in the stone age), which also is still inexplicable since he was about a 55-percent free-throw shooter IIRC.

Irv Chatman had blown out his knee in the ECAC-New England tournament, so we were already shorthanded. In addition to Williams, Maryland also had another future first-round draft choice in Albert King and talented but erratic Ernest Graham, about whom John Feinstein once described as "keeping both teams in the game at the same time."

Anyway, despite being shorthanded, we hung on for three overtimes before losing. Worst nicotine fit I ever had.

I remember watching that game as an 11 year old. Jack Kraft diagrammed the great play to get a charge called on Maryland and John Nelson made 2 FT to force OT ???

Actually, Billy Hahn, Kraft's second assistant, drew it up. He learned during his playing days at (wait for it) Maryland for Lefty Driesell.

Sly williams ran the base line and a Maryland defender ran into John Nelson and a foul was called. I was at the game. I believe Nelson converted both but we lost in ot. It was an NIT game at the Cole Field House. Albert King and Buck Williams played for Maryland and both went on to have decent professional careers.

Former URI basketball player William 'Bill' Shannon who played for the legendary Coach Keaney, passed away. He was just one of his family to pay hoops in Kingston.
