URI has sent out a warning for everyone on campus, and State Police are on the scene.
WTF!

Lead story on noon news on Channel 10. Talking to state police who said there's no evidence yet to support the call warning of a gunman.

WPRI TV news is reporting a second hand account of a student who was in a Chafee lecture hall when someone shouted "He's got a GUN!" and the students stampeded out of the room.

First, I obviously hope everyone is OK and it sounds like that is the case. Very thankful for that.

Second, assuming this is a false alarm, this is terrible timing! The athletic department would look like idiots making an announcement about an assistant coach or the Rutgers rumors today while the news stations are on campus reporting about a gunman in a classroom, whether it was a false alarm or not.

I'm on campus right now. Campus is on lockdown, but tons of kids are just roaming the quad. No one knows how serious of a threat this is. Friends are saying the teachers are keeping them in the classrooms. Any updates from campus I can let you know.

Looking more and more that there has been no shots fired. No confirmation of an actual gun.

WPRI-TV reported that a male walked into a crowded lecture hall in Chafee and said "I'm a nice guy, I'm a nice guy" in a very unstable, unhealthy way. Then a female student shouted "he has a gun!" and the professor ordered all students to leave the lecture hall, resulting in a "stampede".

Cell phones, laptops, etc left behind. State and local police are all over the North end of campus, so I think we will soon have some official word of the actual threat, if any.

I have two family members on campus (staff and student). Both have alerted the rest of the family that they are ok. Nothing unusual happening where they are.

Update: The Kingston campus lock-down has ended. State police have cleared Chafee Hall. The investigation has revealed that at no time was there a gun or an active shooter on the campus. Everyone can resume their normal activities. Shuttles and RIPTA will resume shortly. Classes will resume on Friday, April 5.

Stuff is just getting out of hand. I really don't know what to say. Paranoia, over hyped media, over sensitivity, technology dependency, poor child rearing, and lack of education are slowly eating away at this country....

Lots of nerds being interviewed at URI on this club.
They use Nerf guns. Ugh!

yeah, they use bright orange, purple and yellow nerf guns. And yes mainly nerds and freshman play the game, they also have agreements and rules such as no playing in building which is why it was in the kids backpack

I'm so torn on this.

On one hand, I hate people who overreact and cause panic in these situations.

On the other hand, I think the human v zombie nerds and quiddich nerds are the worst people ever put on a college campus.

I don't know who to hate here. someone help!

I'm not sure I can agree that these nerds are the "worst people ever put on a college campus." Pretty sure I'd put the Uggs, Legings, and iPhone crowd before the nerds...

"State police told NBC 10 on Friday that no one yelled about having a gun at a lecture hall at the University of Rhode Island.

Col. Steven O'Donnell of the Rhode Island State Police said they interviewed hundreds of students, and that no one ever heard the phrase, "I have a gun."

Police said a student yelled "I'm a good guy" in the hallway outside a physiology class at the John Chafee Social Science Center on Thursday.

It was misinterpreted by a female classmate who screamed, "Oh my God", which sparked a scare about a possible gun and prompted a campus lockdown for more than two hours.

A gunman was never found and authorities said there was never any danger.

The only thing police found was a toy Nerf gun inside a backpack that belonged to a student in the class.

Police have not said whether they have identified the female student.
