Nope, but I hope he stays. I think he gets overlooked on this staff a little because he's not a Hurley or a former URI player, but he was very important in getting Martin. Plus, he's just a truly great guy.Rhody74 wrote:If Carr gets a head coaching job, you can't begrudge him.

Re: Coaching Carousel 2013
Hofstra has been a real mess. They have never got back to where Jay Wright had them. Pecora had them at NIT level but couldn't get them over the hump and bailed going to lowly Fordham (that tells you all you need to know about the job). Tim Welsh was originally hired to replace Pecora but just weeks into the job got stopped for DUI and never coached a game. Assistant Mo Cassara then got the job by default but never had any real success. Then four players were arrested this past December for stealing from dorm rooms. Just last week transfer Jamal Coombs-McDaniel was arrested for posession (this had also happened to him when he was at UConn). The program gave the appearance of being totally out of control. Something had to give.

Looks like Hofstra needs a "builder of programs" for a coach.
Here's a headline I'd like to see: Brad Stevens to Canisius....Film at eleven.

I'm surprised after the way Ruland flamed out at Iona that his name would ever come up again.

That DUI seemed to really damage Welsh's prospects. You never even hear his name mentioned for jobs. I remember people thought he would hit big at PC and move onto something bigger. Does he still do commentary on games and on shows?

Keno Davis is head coach at Central Michigan.
We were discussing the previous PC coach that got run out of town, Tim Welsh.

Pitt has signed Jamie Dixon to an extension through the 22-23 season. That's quite a vote of confidence following an early exit.

I think Brad Stevens is waiting for Coach K. to retire. Although Stevens might realize now, that the waters have just gotten deeper for Butler starting next season.
Now, Shaka Smart might be on their radar.
Hope Al gets the job at Hofstra. He could win there. Northwestern? Not a chance.

Yeah, I don't think UCLA has the kind of institutional vibe Brad Stevens would covet. I say no way is he interested. Agree that Duke is much more up his alley.

ESPN is reporting that UCLA wants Shaka Smart. That'd be a big loss for the A10.

UCLA strikes me as being somewhat similar to the Notre Dame job in football - there is a hell of a history there, which simultaneously makes it a hell of a job and also one that you're going to be under a ton of pressure at from day one.

Re: Coaching Carousel 2013
They are going to have to absolutely blow Shaka away with an offer, to get him to leave VCU.
That job is a pressure cooker for sure. Coaches there are expected to win big every year.
That being said, I don't expect Smart to stay at VCU forever. It's not like being at Duke, where Coach K. started in his early 30's, and will retire there.
He might have a particular job in mind, like Stevens. If so, he'll wait.

UCLA is kindly asking that everybody (in general, not here) shut up because they haven't fired their coach.

Re: Coaching Carousel 2013
UCLA is one of a handful of truly elite jobs in America. Shaka Smart has enough personal recognition to be the guy, but he's not an ideal fit in that most of his experience is on the East Coast. Mark Few should be the first phone call. Don't be surprised if Josh Pastner and Buzz Williams also get a sniff here.
And if UCLA offers Smart the job, they'll get him. They can't afford to be turned down and embarrassed, so you would have to think any offer would substantial. They could triple his salary -- $1.4 million right now -- and make him No. 2 on the college coaches pay scale behind only Rick Pitino.

Right, Few would have to be on that list, no? Now that his team is out, he should be available for a chat.

UCLA is a destination job. A blue blood. Kentucky, Indiana, Kansas, UNC, maybe Duke. Tough to turn them down.

Re: Coaching Carousel 2013
After much turnover the last few years, the northeast is a bit quiet this year. The only openings thus far are Buffalo, Siena, Hofstra, Marist and FDU. None of these would exactly be considered premier jobs.
Coaches such as LaSalle's John Giannini, JMU's, Matt Brady, and Andy Toole of Robert Morris might be presently riding high but may not be able to parlay their success this season to better jobs in the northeast.

The axe may still be out for some lower level positions. Keep an eye on Holy Cross, UNH, and Maine.

I heard whispers that Bobby Hurley is in the running for Marist, but I'm pretty sure it's based on a 2004 report that said that Bobby would be interested in coaching there (back when he was a scout with the 6ers) that Google dug up on ESPN.

Because he showed interest before...
But I posted this more as a "it's silly season, so the rumors are flying" post than a "we might lose Bobby" post.
Think of it this way...we have four coaches on staff...Danny Hurley, Preston Murphy, Bobby Hurley, and Jim Carr. Preston (assumed to be a HC in the making) and Danny (last year called one of the best young HC in the country) haven't been mentioned in rumors. Bobby and Jimmy have been.
It's silly season.

Dan Hurley was supposedly interested in the Marist job four in 2008 when Brady left for JMU. I think it was offered and he was very close to accepting it but ultimately turned it down.

No, I won't bite on that "rumor".
Rod would get mad at me.
Bobby's not going anywhere now. He might leave before Dan does, in a few years, but hopefully he stays, and is our next HC when Dan leaves. All too far in the future to speculate any more about it.

Re: Coaching Carousel 2013
Still say Brad Stevens wouldn't consider it. He's got everyone in Butler working their program in the same Zen, "Butler Way". I don't think that system works for the type of players going to UCLA, in that glitz market, etc.
Duke, a school that does still care about acedemics and isn't a "complete" sell-out, NBA kindergarten like Kentucky (who is at least honest about it, to their credit), would be a better fit as a destination.
Shaka's system of getting long, fast athletes to execute Havoc could extend to just about any school, I would think. However, one of the biggest parts of that equation is the chip on their shoulder that those kids have. Many were overlooked by those bigger schools.
Hopefully we have Dan and Shaka for many years to come in the A10. Rams vs Rams rivalry!!

I agree that Stevens stays at Butler, but I would find it very funny if he left right now.
This is why it does no good to get frustrated about coaching rumors and people saying your coach is leaving. It's just what happens.

I really don't understand what Minnesota is thinking firing Tubby Smith. Who do they think they are?
They had there highest ranking since the 80's this year and a second round (Round of 32) appearance as well. In the Big Ten they aren't anything special.
Forgive my Baron-ism for a moment by 5 twenty win seasons with Minny! 3 NCAA Tourney berths, he has got to be one of the most under-appreciated coaches in D1, just check his wiki, his resume is VERY solid....

Minnesota is set up for a dose of reality with their next hire.

Re: Coaching Carousel 2013
Tubby had the same problem that a certain URI coach had:
He couldn't win in February at Minnesota. His teams there either didn't improve late in the season, or actually regressed.
That's what got him fired.
