I presume scrimmages don't necessarily run like real games .... meaning the coaches set up situations, adjust timeouts, rules, etc.

In that sense I am sure coaches prefer them. Not afraid to show more things to knowing they are closed and no tape gets out on you.

Plus they can get a better sense of where their team is. It's more productive going against good Div. 1 opposition than running past a weak Div 3 opponent.

Gotta admit I'm super pumped for Saturday Nov 22. I'll be heading over to Mohegan Sun to watch UMass vs Notre Dame at 12pm, then PC vs Florida St at 2:30pm, then heading over to the Ryan Center to watch us take down Nebraska at 7pm!!! What a great day!! Anyone else doing the same?

Not to beat a dead horse, but the first two games against Pace and UMass-Lowell will not provide rigorous prep for the game against Nebraska. Thank God that the two secret scrimmages, Harvard and Manhattan, will help fill the void. BTW, I noticed in the Blue Ribbon Basketball yearbook that Lowell did not even get a write-up, only school not to get coverage. The BR forecast for the America East Conference predicts a last place finish for them.

It will be interesting to see how we respond: i.e. if we steam roll them 100-40 like a good team should, or we let off the gas.

Plus the highlight reel plays for the students and casual fans, plus a 2-0 record should set the stage for the first OOC sell out (non-PC) in a very, very long time. Off the top of my head - Pitt in the early RC days may be the last? Am I missing one?

OOC though. Conference they have to come here.

After some research, we've only got 2 ranked teams to come to the Ryan Center OOC. #4 Pitt, our last non-conf home game sell out (not PC) in 2002 (ouch), and #13 BC came here on NYE in 06, which was close to a sell out with 7087, but they steamrolled us.

So this would be a big one. It has all the makings of a possible sell out: a ton of hype, nationally known player on our team, big name recruiting class, playing a ranked, big name team with a nationally known player, in the early season so the students are here, on a saturday night...oh and we're desperate for a win against a ranked team because it'll be 16 years in December since we beat a ranked Utah (in Chicago) '98, and honestly I can't find when the last time we beat a ranked team in Kingston was.

IS ANYONE EXCITED YET!?!?!

We have had many several sellouts since the Pitt game. If my memory is correct, all the PC games but one sold out. They were the only other OOC games to do other than Pitt. The first BC game close but was a bout 500 shy. We have not exactly had a lot of attractive OOC games at the Ryan Center over the years. The Pitt, PC, and BC games lead the list. More sellouts have come in A-10 play as multiple UMass games and matches with other league foes such as Dayton and St. Joe's have sold out. In fact, most of the early Pinkout games sold out.

RF1 my point exactly. As I said, outside of PC, which is guaranteed to come here every other year, and the conference schedule, which we don't have any input in, we haven't had an OOC game that sells out. We have had 2 ever in the history of the RC, and they both happened in 2002. We have only had 2 ranked teams come into the RC OOC. My point is that it's very rare for us to get this kind of a quality opponent into our own building of our own volition. It's happened a total of 3 times in 12 years. That alone should be enough to get the place packed, beyond the obvious story lines.

This Nebraska game could be historic for us in many ways, the possible sell out included.

Tonight UMass plays a exhibition game against AIC which is in the same conference as Pace and both these schools are forecasted to be among the bottom dwellers of that league. Games like these have only marginal relevancy. A big win tells you nothing about your team, but if you struggle or lose, then the downside is telling.

Postscript: UMass did what all good teams do facing a bad D-2 team, routing AIC from tip-off to end, 120-71.

The key to Nebraska game attendance is students. After the first two exciting, highlight-reel wins (we hope), students will (even on a Saturday night) show in good numbers to push attendance to 7000. That's my expectation.

There will be strong walk-up tix sales to supplement season tix.

I'm now a good way removed from being a college student but as somebody who didn't let many Saturday nights go by the board, I'd look at a basketball game as a pretty great way to start one off. Sneak a pint of cheap vodka in with you and start getting after it. No-brainer to me.

I'm with Red on this.
I don't see Nebraska being a big draw to the casual fans.
Maybe if the game had come after something significant,
like beating Kansas, there might be a lot of
carry over.
Beating Pace and UMass Lowell, regardless of how much,
isn't going to inspire lethargic students and fringe fans.

Sorry, but Nebraska is not a big-name basketball school. I wonder how many people in Rhode Island even know what conference Nebraska is in.
This is what worries me about our fan base. If people don't consider a school that's got as much national publicity in the past couple years, from a power conference, that's been to the tournament, that's ranked, that has one of the top players in the country, a big name...we've got huge problems.

The biggest name team we've had come to the Ryan Center in the past decade is Boston College. Honestly just about any power conference team should be a big name to this fan base at this point.

Anyone who even casually follows college sports will still know the Nebraska name just because of their football program. We had 4000 people come and see Virginia Tech in a season when everyone HATED the team and were waiting for Jim Baron to be fired. We were 1-7 at that point, and Va Tech is a football name only.

If 4000 showed up for a Wednesday night game during finals week, in a year where we were supposed to suck, did suck, were in the process of sucking, had 1 win to 7 losses, had just lost 4 in a row to BU, Cleve St, Brown, and Maine, and people were trying to not go to the games to make sure athletics got the hint that the fans weren't going to see the team play under that coach...I think we'll be very close to selling out this game.

Saturday night. Students all on campus. Ton of buzz. 2 highlight reel games. A power conference team with a number in front of their name. 4000 people at Midnight Madness. Nationally known players going head to head. Should be a pretty full RC.
