To be clear, firefighters are heroes. But this is absurd. School teachers are heroes, too, but their salaries reflect that you can't make every hero rich.

This also has nothing to do with the government of Rhode Island. This is a city of Providence issue.

I would think the Dems and the left would absolutely LOVE this...yay for union power.
A base salary of under $80K doesn't seem out of line for a fire captain - in fact that seems lower than it should be - and you don't get rich with that kinda salary. That the salary was more than tripled through other means is what is administratively (union) ridiculous....

"In no small part, the pay figures in 2016 signify the unconventionality of a highly unusual Fire Department personnel organization and shift schedule that emerged in August 2015 -after firefighters resisted the city's initial proposal for a more conventional approach aimed at reducing overtime."

"Unconventionality"...."highly unusual"..."resisted"...and why could they resist? ==> union. Go union power....everyone LOVES it when it works for them and theirs, but let's write newspaper articles about it when it when it's someone else's windfall...

I know it makes me unorthodoxed for a progressive but I am opposed to public sector unions for the simple reason that dynamic that keeps private sector unions and ownership in balance does not exist in the public sector. If a private sector union is "too successful" then theoretically the business could go under or their job could be outsourced. In the public sector, the people signing the checks are giving away other peoples' money and it benefits their business (of getting elected) to give money to the unions.
