Veterans with kids going to college - listen up

Unread post by theblueram »

So my daughter will be going to college next year and she really wants to go out of state. I did some research and found the following:
Iowa State will give dependents of all veterans in-state tuition.
The Governor of South Carolina just passed a bill that provides in-state tuition to dependents of any veteran that attend a state college in South Carolina.
She wants to go to Clemson and when I found this out I was very happy.
I was pushing for URI because of the cost and it's a really great school.
By the way, if she goes to Iowa State, the tuition, room and board would be less than if she went to URI.

Wow thats cheap. URI was cheap for me. Not too long ago. If you're only paying for class.

Just being curious, how did she become interested in Clemson? What is the program of in-state tuition to dependents of Veterans, or anything else?

Her focus is pre-Vet. So she focused on schools with a strong animal science program. NC State, Florida, Clemson, URI and Iowa State.
The program for in state tuition comes from a recent bill passed by congress. People getting out of the military and moving to a state they want to live in are not technically residents for 12 months. So if you were stationed in Germany for 3 years and moved to say Kentucky and your kid was going to college in Kentucky they would have to pay out of state tuition.
Some schools and states, like SC, expanded this bill to include all veterans regardless of where they live.

I also told her that her school choices would make a great basketball tournament!

SWPG, the tuition at Iowa State for in state students is $7,000 a year. With room and board for year, the cost is about $16,000. Tuition alone at URI for in state is almost $13,000. Total cost for in state attendance at URI with room and board.....$25,000.
