Rte. 138 in Kingston

Unread post by rambone 78 »

This is about the still poor condition of Rte.138 near campus.

What is it going to take to fix this road? Still patched up, poorly I might add, and dips where manhole covers are.

And another winter is coming. Anything like last year's January/February weather, and it will be virtually impassable.

A total disgrace. Many roads near where I live in eastern CT. have been totally resurfaced, and Rte. 1 in Charlestown looks great now.

I know reducing to one lane to do the necessary work will result in horrendous backups, but it's got to be done, and soon. When???????

It's a state road. Talk to the inept DOT.

The DOT got it done in Charlestown. I know it was an easier fix than 138 will be, due to the traffic and narrowness of the road, but it's got to be done!

Everybody who wants to go to a game at the Ryan from outside the area would appreciate it, don't you think?

Oh that's right. It's URI. Who gives a shit in Providence?

In fairness, if we're talking about people riding around the providence city streets, 138 is like brand new. They probably wish the streets they live on were in such good shape. #MorePotholesthanPeople

An interstate highway was really needed to connect Route 95 to the bridges (and ultimately all the way to Route 24). There would likely have been an exit specific to URI north of campus. It would have alleviated traffic on both routes 138 and to a lesser extent route 95 (Cape Cod bound drives want to avoid Providence). People in the NK, SK, Exeter, and Richmond area fought it. They now have congested secondary roads that can't handle the traffic or wear and tear.

It was truly shortsighted of area residents to oppose this project. Development was coming whether they liked it or not. A highway might actually have made things better and preserved their quality of life. Look no further than the connecting road between the bridges on Jamestown. Some people were against having a highway on the island and thought it would go against the natural feel of the island. If anything, it may have actually better preserved the character of the island. No longer does traffic clog the roads of Jamestown. They just bypass the island going straight to Newport and Jamestown gets to remain a sleepy enclave.

You people must be mistaken about the roads in RI. I distinctly heard Linc saying how he fixed all the roads in RI during his brief debate appearance.
You remember Linc....He was the guy running on the issue of never having a scandal

Even if the residents became in favor of it now, it has been years of stricter environmental regulations and increase in property values along the proposed route. There would be a ridiculous price tag which would put the recent bridge projects to shame.

Besides the policies during the depression then following WWII to encourage public works projects which we have not seen repeated during modern times, it is no accident that very little new interstate construction has occurred other than rural/Western areas since the rise of the EPA and local environmental agencies starting in the 1970s. We are also not breathing in coal dust on a regular basis, so there is good and bad in the increased regulation. I was not in the state during the Route 4 construction, but am sure that was a cost and permitting nightmare which would be dwarfed by doing a similar project today.

Thank god for Rt 4 down to to Rt 2 and later the extension down to Rt 1 was made. I cannot imagine life in South County without that road.
