URI Should go private
Bressler, I've been saying URI should go private for years. I mean, they are virtually that way now, with most of their funding coming from private sources.
I know it's not as easy as it might seem, but since the school is treated like an outcast in it's own state, why not?
I do think it will happen someday.

Are there any State universities private in the United States? Would uri be the first?rambone 78 wrote:Bressler, I've been saying URI should go private for years. I mean, they are virtually that way now, with most of their funding coming from private sources.

Re: Another accomplishment for E.C Matthews
Ramster, don't know about that. URI could have to change their name if so?
The biggest question involving funding, would going private jeopardize any federal govt. funding and grants for research, and the like?
Separating from the state would cause a lot of legal issues I would think, but in the long term create other opportunities without state restrictions.
Look at it this way, one benefit would be this: We wouldn't have to listen to the idiots at the Journal complain about our basketball coach's salary being the highest in the state anymore!

Why are you guys trying to have a serious discussion about making URI a private school (lol) in a thread about one of our guys being named a freshman all-american? Seriously, how is that relevant and why is it topical? It makes us look like lunatics.

I know as the idea of URI going private has been brought up on this board for years. I just don't know if htere is any precedent for it ever having happened before. I also don't know how reasible it would be to happen, for example, you raise a good question as to whether the school would have to change it's name.
the Projo talking about the salary does not bother me at all, just noise basically.
But the lower the percentage of state funding the school gets the more feasible going private becomes I guess - I jsut don't know much about it. Personally I like being the State University myself.

I like public.
Question to me is....does URI own the buildings and tons of land? Do they owe for it all if they go private? I think its impossible. If not impossible, way too difficult for someone to navigate.

Re: URI Should go private
It's kind of a ludicrous question, honestly, but if people want to talk about it is rather you do it here than in the other thread.

My memory is a bit vague, but I think part of the University of Vermont is private. When my folks graduated from there in the 1930's it was known as "The University of Vermont and State Agricultural College". I also seem to remember that the Aggie school at Cornell is state related.

Re: URI Should go private
It is ridiculous that the state complains about Dan being the highest paid state employee. I actually saw in infograph which showed how the highest state employee in every state is pretty much either the football or basketball at each state's flagship university.

True Point - "Ludicrous question"
Perhaps so - but probably no more so than the multi week saga of tail chasing regarding the status of one Mr. Hare!!
This is a discussion forum of general topics related to URI and this one appears to be causing no bodily harm.

Maineiac, I don't care if people want to talk about it, but it started in a thread about EC receiving a great honor and I thought it would detract from that conversation, so I moved it.

Makes sense now - didn't realize it started on another thread. I don't monitor this on a 24 hour basis!!

This is a terrible idea, but thankfully it's also ludicrous and will never happen.

Re: URI Should go private
Years ago, mid 70's, UVM did something along the lines of going private and that resulted in them dropping football. The quarterback was considered a very good player and ended up at Brown (Bob Bateman). Today, UVM describes itself as a quasi state school, getting 13% of its budget from the state.

Re: URI Should go private
Regardless of what they brand themselves to placate taxpayers, UVM isn't "quasi" anything. It is a public university, and its 13% percent state contribution is 5% higher than URI's. Vermont didn't go "private" in the 70s, although it did start as a private school back in the 1800s and was taken over as the state school later in that century (NH tried to do the same thing with Dartmouth, but they failed, Daniel Webster personally argued against it). They brand themselves as "having both public and private traditions" because of the positive connotations some people assume for private schools, and to attract out of state students to pay their 35k tuition costs.

By-the-way: That's why I stated that the University should still accept the 1% state-funding. For the use of the name.
Also, private institutions also receive Federal grants and research funding. (Haaaaahvid ring a bell????)

We should charge the State for advertising (jerseys). If we do own the land, we could go private, build a casino, keep the colors and call ourselves something like the Kingston Blue Chips.

UPenn, the ivy, is private. I know when I toured UDel they talked about how they were both public and private (not sure how that worked)

Delaware is somewhat private:
From its wiki page:
Although UD receives public funding for being a land-grant, sea-grant, space-grant and urban-grant state-supported research institution, it is also privately chartered.
