URI head envisions hub in city to spur growth
URI President Dooley advocates for joint nursing facility, collaborative research in Providence’s Knowledge District and a separate new research park near Kingston campus

As Rhode Island’s leaders search for a clear path to economic prosperity — pressured by mounting public awareness of their lack of vision and action — the president of the University of Rhode Island says he has a plan that is sure to spur jobs and growth.
David M. Dooley wants to expand URI’s presence in downtown Providence and shift some research capacity to the capital city, a move that he says will boost collaboration among universities, hospitals and businesses.
The president is championing a $65-million joint nursing facility that would be shared by URI and Rhode Island College. The school would be built by a private developer on land opened up by the relocation of Route 195, in Providence’s so-called Knowledge District.
The nursing school would be the anchor tenant in a larger complex that would include retail space, offices for collaborative research and spin-off companies.
Dooley says Rhode Island must leverage what it already has — a concentration of medical and health centers, institutions of higher learning, young talent and an enviable geographic location — and use these factors to foster robust economic development.

Has anyone heard that Dooley is leaving URI? Heard it was announced at commencement today. Haven't seen it in the news anywhere.
