Years ago, people always seemed to learn a stick shift on college hill in Prov.

I taught my ex wife, and my daughter how to use a standard.
My daughter was OK, until she had one of those College Hill incidents,
freaked out, and never drove a stick again.
Now, she's looking at Jeep Wrangler, which is usually a stick shift.
So, now she's asking for a refresher course.
My Saab is crying, at the thought.

I was lucky to learn to shift with the worlds worst manual transmission in an old VW beetle that would stall whenever you took your foot off the gas....every other car was easy after that...

.....even though there are fewer manual's around now my daughter is a skilled shifter and even has my motorcycles down pat....she is 23...

Heh, I learned on a Ford Galaxy with a wheel stick, and no syncromesh.
That old buzzard let you and everyone in the world know when you
missed a gear. CRAAAAAANK!
Yes, after that, anything was easy.
I think it's sad that only big buck German cars are producing standards.
As I've said, I look in some guy's Vette and see a PRNLD and wonder how a
"sports car" can be called that, when a chimpanzee can operate it.
Where's the fun? Why even have a tachometer?
As always, I think I was born 30 years too late. Get off my lawn!

I see an MBG second row, an MG on the right 4th row next to a Sunbeam Alpine or Tiger, A Land Rover front row center, and Austin Healy 3000,dead center, a Bentley or Rolls 3rd row right,a Citroen next to the RR, a Morris Minor convertable (2nd row center), a few of Mini-Coopers,a Mercedes 5th row left, a Bug way in the back, white car in the 3rd row center could be a RR Cornishe, and a shitload of ugly Euro cars.

I'm getting in my time machine and going back, to when cars were cars,
music was music, people had some manners, men dressed and groomed like gentlemen, not bums on the beach,
and women acted like women, and not like participants is some trashy reality show.

I learned how to shift gears in an old Ford truck. One time I decided to wind it out and mistakenly shifted from third back to second instead of into fourth. Almost threw myself out the windshield! Anyway, if there is no clutch then you are not really driving a standard. Had a Corvette with a manual transmission, awesome car. Had an old Plymouth with a 3 speed on the steering column. Those were cool. Had a 1960 Dodge Seneca with an automatic, but you selected the gear with pushbuttons on the dashboard.

Pushbuttons on the dash? So to get going from a stop you have to press buttons to advance the gears?!

I enjoyed driving my uncle's big dump truck when I worked for him during Summers while I was in college. No synchros in that gearbox, so had to learn the trucker double-clutch shifting method.

Early '60s Dodge Darts/Plymouth Valiants had 'em. I had an old Dart which required me to hit Park-Drive-Park-Drive before it would work. It was like having a combination lock. I don't know if other cars had them.

Chrysler always had quirky transmissions. My first car was a '54 Plymouth with a 3-speed on the steering column and clutch that was optional to use. They called it a "Hy-drive semiautomatic"

My first car was a 74 Ford Maverick I bought in the summer of 84 for 500 bucks. My friends thought it should be a convertible so they took a solid oxygen pellet torch to it. It rained for 3 straight weeks after they cut the roof off. I used to drive around in my wet suit. I had milk crates in the back seat for when we went to the drive in movies. Fun times!

My cousin in London had a 1972 Jaguar E-Type, 12-valve…..Well, he took me out "for a spin," in June '78, which turned into a madcap burst on the A-3 Highway….
As we hit approximately 150 mph, I asked: "Uh, Alan, whaddya figure?"
"What?!?" he shouted, in his "Hawh-hawh-hawh London-accent."
"Aren't you afraid of getting arrested by the police????"
"Let them catch me!!!! Hawh-hawh-hawh!!!!!"

Maserati TC, Cadillac Cetera, Jag X Type, that short-assed Mercedes.
Guess it's a manufacturer trying to get it's badge out
to the greater public, in a crappy package.
I hadn't realized Ferrari bought Maserati, and all the engines are made in
Modena.
That Quattroporte was a car to die for.

Chrysler had some weird ideas, but that Slant-6 225 engine they made in the 1960s and 1970s was indestructible. There would probably be some on the road today had the rest of the car not fallen apart around them.

My ex wife had one a 240DL, and managed to make it look
like a portable Johnston Land Fill, in a matter of weeks.
Unfortunately, my daughter has inherited her talent for
making good cars into rolling dumps.
I gave her my spotless 850 when she turned 16, figuring it was safe and reliable.
Well 8 years, two mammoth dents, and piles of trash later, she got a Toyota Camry,
Also pristine and turned that into a version of the WM trucks.
You could eat off the floor of any car I've ever owned. Ugh!

It was the fall of 1962 in my freshman year and I was heading to dinner at the Butterfield Dining Hall. Suddenly this blue XKE drove by with a student at the wheel. I asked the person who was with me who that person was. He ( a Rhode Islander) told me in hushed tones, "Oh that's Patriarca's son!" Being from Maine I had no clue who Patriarca was and I got a quick lesson on who really ran Rhode Island! As many of you no doubt remember, "Junior" was "one and done" and as I remember went on into the family business. There was a bit in the book " Prince of Providence" where it was said that his father contacted a couple of professors in hopes of changing a grade or two. At a reunion a few years ago one of my buddies on the track team who lived accross the hall from Junior entertained us with various tales.

I was once asked to make some remarks at our 25th reunion at Homecoming and I noted that nothing had changed in that the Ram Band was still better than the football team. I also said that I was glad to be back in Rhode Island - the land of good government and that the best thing that Rhode Island had going for it was that Louisiana existed!

From up north here it looks like nothing has changed!

My rich sister and my brother-in-law went to NJ and had a
weekend driving exotic cars. Guess for a price, you can participate in this.
Aston Martin, Ferrari, Bentley, Lamborghini, Mercedes AMG, and Maserati.
Wow!
Nice to have money.......They own a restored '57 TBird and the James Dean bathtub Porsche Speedster.
I just got a Saab convertible, for considerably less money than it probably cost them
for their fantasy drives. Love it. Looks and runs great.
My last few cars have been: Volvo 760 Turbo, Saab 9000, Volvo 850,
Saab 900 coupe (keeping it for hauling large things) and now Saab 9-3 convertible.
Must be a Swedish thing?

Still in business!

"After months of negotiations, Spyker N.V., the Dutch car manufacturer, is given the green light to buy General Motors Co.’s Saab brand. The main driver that spurred the deal into completion was the approval of a $400 million euro (US$544 million) loan that Spyker received from European Investment Bank (EIB).

Additionally, Spyker is set to pay to GM $74 million in cash and $326 million in preferred shares of the new company. Out of the $74 million, Spyker was already able to raise $50 million and still needs to fund another $24 million to complete the deal.

Lax - Saab the car manufacturer is not the same company as Saab the defense manufacturer.
