ESPN SHOW, I HATE CHRISTIAN LAETTNER

Unread post by rodfromcranston »

I tuned in just to see what the fuss was about, and stayed up until after
1:00 AM watching it.
The show is very interesting, and focuses on not just Laettner, but the Duke program,
and why some people dislike the school and the program.
Laettner was one of the greatest college players, ever.
Nobody was more clutch.
Nobody was more controversial. either.
As they said, he never committed a crime, never was involved in a scandal,
yet today, people still despise him.
The ultimate pretty boy, who played like the villain, and didn't care what anyone thought.
He loved the abuse from opposing fans and taunted the crowd back.
AT LSU. where he dueled Shaq, Coach K called a timeout, and told Laettner,
"Stop doing that. You're going to get us killed!"
They keep flashing pictures of Tom Brady, as today's comparison as a disliked player,
because he wins.
Bobby Hurley is featured, and there's even a cameo by Rick Flair.
The ugly gnome who put up the "Why Duke Sucks" video on You Tube, is
Alyssa Datt's husband, which proves, there is no God.

I Love Christian Laettner

- 11 year old me

I really, really loved those early nineties Duke teams. I was too young to know or care about the 88 thing, but I just loved the idea of those guys beating the scary UNLV team.

Me too! I don't hate Duke and never did.
I did hate Danny Ferry, though. I can understand how some dislike Coach K.
I always thought Laettner, Grant Hill and Bobby Hurley
were as good as it got for college basketball.
They beat the "outlaw" teams, UNLV and The Fab Five.
As their players admitted in the piece, they found out that the pretty boy was
anything but soft, and could really play the game.
Duke was not a bunch of choir boys. The only guy who came from a
wealthy background was Grant Hill. The rest were from blue collar families.
Sad to realize, we will never see their like again.

I hated (past tense- not now) Laettner but loved those Duke teams. It worked out somehow.

I also watched that show last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Good for Bobby to have put up with Christian and then when the team needed it went after the big guy to wake him up, leading to National Championship #2 in as many years.

Despised the Dukies; for all the reasons articulated on the show. They seemed squeaky clean and got away with things that no one else did.
Forgot how good Laetner really was.

Top 4 performers in March in my lifetime - Ewing, Danny Manning, Laettner, Kemba. Dominant in the biggest moments.
