Northwestern Football Players Can Unionize

Unread post by Rhody74 »

If this holds up through appeals and the football players vote to unionize, this could change college sports fundamentally ....

Grantland had a really good "explainer" kind of piece on this: http://grantland.com/features/northwest ... ics-union/ - Along with the Ed O'Bannon lawsuit, they're probably the two biggest challenges to the current college sports system in the next decade.

Heck, it would probably mean a bunch of tax benefits for them, since they're not getting paid. ;) When I was doing some unpaid work for a local high school, I was able to deduct some of it from my taxes, which was nice.

Can they apply for an earned income credit? How would there income be calculated? If the value of the tuition is considered income the opposite might be true and a player who works a minimal amount during the year who is otherwise eligible for an earned income credit would lose that.

The IRS makes everything in life really annoying.
