Another Projo piece lamenting the death of the old Big East

Unread post by RF1 »

Another article lamenting the death of the old Big East from the Projo. This one was from McNamara (still smarting that he will no longer be seeing his alma mater Syracuse every year). Portrays the old Big East as a persecuted victim as others such as Rooke often does. Are these guys really as dumb as what they write? The old Big East was ruthless in its pursuit to build a league and distance itself from all the other schools in the east. It's members ended decades long rivalries and the league raided other conferences regularly. The Eastern-8/A-10 was continually hurt as the old and new Big East always came looking for more - Villanova, Pitt, WVU, Rutgers, Va Tech, Temple, Xavier, and Butler. Where were the sob stories for the A-10 each time this happened? The Big East finally got what it had been doing for years and these guys and their revisionist history portray the league as a victim. Give us a break as nothing could be further from the truth!

The Vikings could have learned some lessons about pillaging from that league

It's sad to hear BE people still complaining about it, as for the time being the conference looks to be ok. Great money, great recruiting, good competition, decent attendance, and should get 4 out of 10 teams in the tourney with 5th and 6th just on the outside looking in.

As for the expansion piece, the way the BE got blindsided in the last batch of recruiting is vastly different than how the A-10 was, as Syracuse and Pitt basically woke up one day and said we are leaving out of the blue, whereas there was a growing movement to the BE split and A10 teams moving long before it was announced. But it happens, and every conference pulls from whereever they can to better their product. Before the BE pulled X and Butler, the A10 was pulling VCU and Butler. The BE decimated the CUSA, and the A10 benefitted from some of the pieces (Charlotte and St. Louis).

It is what it is. Both conferences are doing as good as can be expected right now, that should be the real story. In the case of PC, they are helped by the deeper, but weaker top of the conference. URI should also end up ultimately helped by realignment.
