OT Brittany Griner

Unread post by rodfromcranston »

I've watched her since she came on the scene with Baylor.
She obviously physically overmatches anyone in the game, because she's
6'8" and mobile.
However, she's a dirty player. Watching the UConn-Baylor game last night. She
did two take downs of her opposite number, once the player's head slammed into the floor,
and only got called once.
Constantly hooking the person guarding her, going to the basket.
She gets away with things, as if she were a protected NBA superstar.
She's not exactly a bubbling personality off the court, either.
Despite her talent, I'm not a fan.

Ever hear her talk? Do they still do chromosone tests on athletes?

Kind of a tough situation for her - I mean, I think it would be odder if a 7'0" woman had a voice like Kerri Strug. At least from what I've read on genetics (meaning, not a bunch, but a great book by Sam Kean on DNA called The Violinist's Thumb), the difference from one sex to the other on a biologic level isn't that grand. It means that yeah, Brittany Griner might be a bit "more guy" than some other gals, but it works the opposite way as well.

Some of what I read, on a serious note, said she might actually
be "misgendered".
She's not much different in size than Rebecca Lobo, who doesn't sound like
a guy. Who knows? If she's transgender, or misgendered, it doesn't seem
fair to the women she's playing against.

I believe transgender issues are between the ears, Rod.....I don't think you get added strength and muscle mass....that would be testosterone based and I am not sure if there is steroid testing in women's basketball...

....if the issue is between her ears.....then I believe she should compete against women....

No, it would be chromosome testing, like they do in the Olympics.
Too many Y chromosomes indicate a man. Remember all the Eastern Bloc athletes who
failed those tests?
Transexuality is a physical fact. Some people have both sexes.
I used the wrong term, in my prior post.

Now I get you premise....there was an Olympic athlete or runner from Africa who was having this issue confront her and they wanted to check her chromosomes.....it engendered a lot of vitriol on both sides of the issue...

That was the most recent example.
I remember the East Germans, especially, back in the 60's.
They were outrageous, and finally the Olympic Committee was
forced to have all athletes tested for gender.
It's a tricky area, because, as you say, it gets people
angry on both sides of the issue.
