I know that we are all rightfully focused on the 16th rank basketball team, but the baseball team opens their season With a weekend series at Texas A&M. Game 1 is tomorrow night at 7:30pm. All 3 weekend games will be streamed on the watch ESPN APP on the SEC network +. Looking forward to getting down to the Beck in late March for the home opener.

Just went to look. Didn't do too badly against a top team. All losses:

Game 1: 4-1
Game 2: 4-3 (with Rhody leading 3-1 after 7).
Game 3: 10-2

Would have liked to have squeaked out a win.

Home opener is today vs Sacred Heart, Cam LaFleur (6.0 ERA) with the start. Scoreless Top 2. Can listen on 90.3 fm.

Men's baseball is having an unusually bad season this year. The start as typical was not good given all the away games versus strong competition in warmer climates. The difference this year is that it did not improve once they got back north. Now stand at 8-24 for the season with a dismal 1-8 in league play. Will be extremely difficult just to qualify for the A-10 Tournament given such a poor start.

After this weekend we're 3-9 in the A10. The top 7 make the tournament, right now Richmond has that spot and they're 5-4, so we're 3.5 back with 12 games to go, none against Richmond. We'd also have to leap frog St. Joe's (4-6) but we host them for 3 this weekend and St. Bonaventure (3-7) who we host the final weekend of the season. We're tied with UMass but took 2 out of 3 from them this weekend.

The other two teams we have 3 game sets with to end the year are home against La Salle and at Dayton. Those teams are tied for last at 2-7.

After a 3 game sweep of St. Joe's this weekend, we've now moved into 8th place alone. Richmond lost two of three vs. Davidson, so we're now 1.5 back of the final tournament spot with 9 conference games to go.

Might be the worst season in some time now. What gives?

My guess is the difficult early schedule hurt their confidence more than it has in previous years and so the funk continued once they got into conference play and it took awhile to right the ship. Plus under performance from Tyler Wilson coming back from injury.

Richmond took two of three this past weekend while we were on the bye, so now they're up 2 with 9 to go. We host second to last La Salle this weekend, travel to 9th place Dayton next weekend, then host 10th place St. Bonaventure the following weekend to finish out the year. Richmond travels across town to 5th place VCU this weekend, hosts La Salle the following weekend, then finishes out the year at 3rd place Fordham.

Kudos to the baseball team for their 11th straight win putting them at 500 for the season in the A-10. No quit in this team. Congrats to the coaches and players. - on to Dayton!

After our sweep of La Salle and Richmond taking two out of three this weekend at VCU, we are 1 back with 6 games to go. This weekend we travel to 9th place Dayton and Richmond hosts last place La Salle. In theory we can still finish anywhere from 2nd to last.

After this weekend's play we're still in 8th place, but there is a new 7th place team we need to catch to make the tournament, George Washington, who we're one game behind with three to play. We did not play them this season. We host 10th place St. Bonaventure and they travel to 1st place St. Louis. All series go from Thursday to Saturday this week. We can finish anywhere from 4th to 9th.

Beat ranked UConn yesterday at Beck erasing a one run deficit with two solo home-runs in the 8th to win 4-3.

We beat St. Bonaventure in the first game of the series today. Tomorrow will be a doubleheader starting at 11 to end the regular season. George Washington hasn't started their first game against St. Louis yet. They own the tiebreaker over us no matter what happens the rest of the way, so we need St. Louis' help

With our win yesterday and George Washington's loss we're now in a tie for the last tournament slot, with the first game of our doubleheader underway. Currently it's scoreless in the bottom of the second, but we have runners on second and third, one out. You can see the live stats here:

We win the first game 14-7, which is really helpful, puts some pressure on GW and takes some off for our second game. The first pitch of our second game should be around 2:30 and first pitch of today's GW game should be 3.

That was a big one for Rhody, pulling away in the late innings after Wilson gave back an early lead. Tyler Barss faced the minimum over the last 3 innings to record the W. If we win the second game of the doubleheader, we'll only need regular season champs St. Louis to win 1 of their last 2 vs GW to make the postseason. Richmond are up 5-1 on Fordham after 7; if that result holds, we'll no longer be able to catch the Spiders.

URI up 3-2 bottom 8
St. Bonaventure basically has thrown up on themselves
7th inning - single, wild pitch, error gives URI 1st and 3rd with 1 out and they score on a sac fly
8th inning - strike out but advance on wild pitch, sac bunt, wild pitch, sac fly

Had to finish 16-2 to end the season just to get into position for a chance at the last A-10 seed. Their beginning of the season was that bad, If GW can get one win in a DH (rainout today) at St Louis tomorrow, URI is done for the season. Not a good season for a team picked for 3rd in the league.

Well, as luck would have it we are tied for 7th.......I can't find mention of a tie breaker on the A10 website. Not sure if it is a play in game, or what.

After the slow start to the season, we ended up 13-11 in conference, a top 100 rpi, and two wins over nationally ranked teams.

Tie breaker is record against common opponents, so we lose that to GW

Really sucks we couldn't make the conference tournament with the talent we have...

Seems like Tyler Wilson didn't have nearly as good a season as he's capable of.

His injury is a notoriously difficult one to come back from and be the same guy. Most times, guys will come back missing a bit of the "stuff" that they used to have and their command usually suffers from the injury.

Timing couldn't have been worse for when he was hurt, as he had a chance to make pretty decent money in last year's draft if was able to stay healthy

Will he probably never get over it?

He might not. Labrum injuries the last I knew were one of the last frontiers in sports medicine, especially a pitcher. As of 2012 you were looking at something like 9 out of 67 pitchers having labrum surgery returning to something like their previous level of success. That's UP from 1 in 36 from 99-04. Elbows are relatively easy when the ligament pops. Get Tommy John done and the rehab is pretty straight forward. Here's an article from 2016 that has a fairly grim prognosis.

It's tough to say definitively, but it's certainly not a good situation as RR02 mentioned. The tough part for him is that, had this happened after last year's draft, then he would have been able to collect a signing bonus and rehab using Major League facilities and doctors. Since it happened prior to the draft, all of his rehab is done through the school and his own doctors.

I will say though, as a lefty, he may be able to "reinvent" himself with his new stuff and still get a pro look - but it would likely be as a late round draft pick or an undrafted free agent. It's tough for me to say, because I haven't watched him throw this year - but I'm sure area scouts have a feeling as to how much they think he can bounce back and whether he is worth a late-round draft flier.

I really hope he can make it back.

He easily could've gone high in the draft after single handedly beating South Carolina.
