2017 football preview

Unread post by RhowdyRam02 »

I picked up the Street & Smith college preview guide tonight. They have URI picked 11th, only ahead of Elon.

7-50 over the last five years, has a chance to make a move with 16 starters back. Fourth-year coach Jim Fleming will try to fortify a running game that averaged a league-low 112.5 yards per game and get more out of sophomore QB Jordan Vazzano.

Predicted league standings are:

#3 James Madison
#6 Richmond
#7 Villanova
#19 Albany
New Hampshire
William & Mary
Delaware
Towson
Stony Brook
Maine
Rhode Island
Elon

James Madison DE Andrew Ankrah is considered the top NFL prospect in the conference.

Harvard is picked 2nd in the Ivy and Brown is picked 7th ahead of only Columbia.

This years team has talent, but not confidence (?).
Need to start 2-2 or 3-1 or long season again.
Its not the kids.

Looks pretty good.
UNM good program. Rhody has had other FBS transfers in there and do zip.
They need someone to push Vazzano and Priore.

CAA football media day is today. URI was picked to finish last. Towson was 10th with 84 points, Elon 11th with 36, and we came in with 31, to give you an idea of where the conference coaches and media directors think us an Elon are compared to the rest of the conference. We don't have anyone on the preseason all conference team. Jim Fleming and Harold Cooper will be speaking from 11:10-11:18, so in just a few minutes. Link to watch is here:

I know people hate the existence of URI football, but even with those projections, I'm pumped that my school has a football team I can root for and a stadium ( even in its current condition) to watch the rams play. Cool beautiful fall weather, campus foliage, tailgating and beers with a URI sweatshirt. I'm all about it.

People hate the existence of URI football in its current state. There's a meaningful difference. And some people demand a safe stadium to sit in and actually get upset when their favorite team loses instead of saying, "gee whiz, we lost, but did you see those leaves! What a great time I had watching my favorite team lose!"

Give it a rest will you?
You take things out of context and twist

Never, ever did I say I did not care if URI's Football Team loses
I sit in the stands in the last game of the season with no wins, 50 MPH winds and 35 degrees because I love the team, love the school.
I sit through game after game of URI Basketball, when the season means nothing and watch Jim Baron's team play out their last game when many stay away
Stop blaming certain posters and fans for the state of URI Football. I am no more to blame than you are.
Stop with the leaves schtich please

You are right. But you also know I talked about the cool, crisp fall days and the leaves turning in the past - so I thought you were referring to me.

Nope I'm not RhodyMob05 but I'm happy to know he likes Fall in New England too.

Other sports like what? Softball? Track? People care about football. People need to realize that uri football gets more fans and collects more money from fans than every other uri sport combined outside of Rhody basketball. You wanna fill the volleyball stands instead? Be my guest. The only way to win is to actually have a team in the first place.

He said that other programs would get more resources and scholarships when we'd drop to the NEC. It seems like he's saying whatever will get him the least heat based on the current situation.

All the predictions were probably made before we got the 2 transfers from D1 schools. Having a capable qb SHOULD result in a better team.

Mack Lowrie was a transfer from a D1 program...these kids transferred for a reason...they were not going to play at the D1 school. The write up on the scrimmage sounded like all others...lots of cliches from Flemming and lots of interceptions. The last three years have convinced me that this coaching staff is not up to the job. URI needs better.

Eds right. A lot of it is coaching 'em up!

Transfers been mixed bag-Steve Tosches,Dave Grimsich,Dave Wienke-all very good.
Ken Mastrole,Billy Jack Haskins,Etienne-good QBs-bad records.
Lowrie-stunk.
Probst-blah.
Tom Ehrhardt=great.

Hope the odds are decent given there are two of them this year.

Probst was the last decent QB we had, when we went 5-6 in 2010. You would have thought we were ranked Top 5 in the country that year with the buzz around campus with the team. Was a sophomore and worked in athletics and the excitement was legit.

The way that team was playing in the 2nd half of the season they could have beaten a Top 5 ranked team... in fact I believe they beat several such teams. I am sure it must have been great on campus. But did it really make any difference to the administration? Dark days ever since.

Hal,
You are right. Probst was a 5th year Senior if I remember right that year.
Bentson was a local kid from Warwick Vets.
Did Trainer just pull Probst in favor of Bentson or was there some type of injury involved with Probst in 2011?

So you take the best high school RB from NJ and, on the worst running team in the conference, you stick him at LB?

Ramster-in 2011,there was a lot of pressure on Probst and he felt it. (1st team pre season All CAA). Constantly trying to force ball, throwing across his body and across the field -all real bad. The O line played great,no run game. He won 1 game. Allegedly had concussion or something at season mid point, but rumors got back he was out partying all the time. A real hollow feeling and a wasted season.

Yes, interesting, but now they are moving him back to running back. Wonder what changed or how this came about? Also article is not clear as it says he is moving from offense to defense but actually the other way around as you read the article.
