Rams take game 1 of a doubleheader against Umass behind a great start from Matt Murphy

Another great year for Rhody Baseball. Need to finish strong and try and secure an at large. Although they got screwed a few years ago and everyone knew it. So maybe that plays into account if we don't win the tournament.

Won the first, now up 5-0 in 6th vs UMASS trying to sweep the doubleheader and extend winning streak to 8 games.
VCU split with Dayton today so now URI and VCU have 4 losses in A10 play to lead the league.

2nd game of Saturday doubleheader suspended with URI up 5-0. Resumed Sunday morning with URI winning 6-0. URI then swept the series by winning the third game 3-1. Rhody is now momentarily tied with VCU for first in the A-10 at 16-4 and is overall 28-16. They are 12-1 at beck field. Three games left in A-10 vs George Mason next week in Kingston. Conference tournament starts May 24th in St. Louis. First place team gets a 1st round bye.

VCU lost today so I think we now lead them by 1/2 game. There is not a tie breaker in play here as for some reason the teams did not play each other this year.

They have a great shot at the conference title...win 3 and they clinch.

Then 3 tough non con games...UConn and then Bryant twice.....

Win 5 out of 6 and they likely get in as an at large, if they don't win the conference tourney.

Imagine if they still had their best pitcher.

Wait, what? How do we not play them? I guess there's not enough time in the season to play a series with all 13 teams?

VCU (16-5) will not have played the current 1st place URI Rams (16-4) or 3rd place SBU Bonnies (14-6) at all during the regular season. SBU and URI played a three game series at Olean with SBU taking two. VCU might also end up playing one more conference game than either URI or SBU due to weather cancelled games. If these teams finish with the same number of losses, VCU would win the tiebreaker having played one additional game which it won. Each team plays one last three game conference series this upcoming weekend - GMU at URI, Fordham at SBU, and VCU at Richmond.

URI is the only A-10 team that may not have to win the conference tournament to make the NCAA. URI has a current RPI of #46 while VCU is #106 and SBU is #133.

From yesterday's gorhody.com article: With the win, Rhode Island improves to 16-4 in the Atlantic 10 and moves into first place in the conference standings after VCU (16-5) dropped two of three games to Dayton this weekend. Eleven of Rhody's 16 conference wins have come against teams ranked in the league's top-8 while nine of VCU's 16 A-10 wins have been against teams ranked ninth or lower.

That certainly explains the RPI disparity.

They need to get their RPI into the 30's to have a real shot at an at large.

Winning the conference, beating UConn a second time, and splitting with Bryant would put them in good position, as long as they advance some in the conference tourney also.

Never would have guessed that Dayton would take 2 of 3 from VCU this weekend. Dayton had a dismal 4 total A10 conference wins going into the series with 1st Place VCU. Dayton scored 4 in the bottom of the 8th in the tight 7-6 win in the series finale.

VCU now goes to Richmond for their last 3 conference games Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
URI plays home to a tough George Mason team that is 10-8 in A10 play. Nice weekend to catch the Rams in Kingston in a series in which they can clinch the Conference Championship!! Rhody plays Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Nice A10 Conference Recognition this week for 2 of our Pitchers......
Murphy recorded a career-high nine strikeouts over 7.0 shutout innings to lead URI to a 5-0 win over UMass in the series opener. The righty from Wakefield, R.I. issued only one walk while allowing just four hits to improve to 5-2 on the season. He did not face more than four hitters in six of his seven innings pitched, only facing five batters in the error-extended fifth. The first four outs of the game were strikeouts, and he had seven Ks through the first three innings before recording a 1-2-3 fourth on three straight groundouts to second base. Murphy did not allow a runner past second base.

Jangols allowed just one run - on a solo homer - over eight innings to help Rhode Island complete the series sweep of UMass Sunday afternoon. The right-hander struck out five and issued just one walk while tossing four 1-2-3 innings. The Tuxedo Park, N.Y. native needed just 85 pitches to get through eight innings, lowering his ERA to 1.24 on the season while improving to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Atlantic 10.

We have proved that we have a truly great baseball program. To be in first place going into the final series in the conference season after losing Wilson is big time.
Imagine how dominant we would have been with him...

This is the first time since this weekly bracketology started in the end of February that URI has been in the Bracket. Up until now it has always been VCU. None of the weeks has an at large team been mentioned from the A10. So pretty much saying you must win the A10 Tournament.

I remember us winning 36 games or so one year and we still didn't get an at-large.

I don't know that it ever has or ever will, but there was some talk in this thread earlier that URI might get an at large because the RPI was in the mid 40's and they would have to finish strong beating UCONN, Bryant, George Mason, etc.

Still not sure it would happen. Best to win the A10 Tournament. But MAYBE winning the Conference like it looks like we can makes things a bit different? Not sure, especially with Baseball. There are a lot of very good teams in the South and the West

Well forget the at large chances.....pitching crapped the bed and they lost 2 of 3 this weekend.

Have to win the conference tourney now.....losing their best pitcher has come back to bite them after all.

However I think they've overachieved to this point, to even get this far.

Losing two out of the last three conference games at home to GMU could end up with URI going from the #1 seed to the #3 seed. Disappointing to end with two one run losses.

Rhody baseball in major tailspin to end the season. Defeated by Bryant today 15-6 for fourth straight loss. At large bid hopes dead, dead, dead. Must win A-10 Tournament. Only recent good news is that SBU lost to Fordham today 2-1 assuring URI no worse than 2nd place in A-10. VCU beat Richmond in the first game of their series today. VCU will be the #1 seed unless they lose the next two games to UR.

They continued to do well without Wilson until game two of the A-10 regular season ending series with GMU. Since then, they have gone off the rails losing five of six. A once very promising season went south very fast at the end.

Well they beat GW yesterday.....now they have to win 2 elimination games today in order to advance to the final, against most likely VCU....and they will have to beat them twice to win the title.

Possible, but not likely.

It seems like, for whatever reason, their issue is specifically George Mason and not necessarily hot and cold streaks. In their last 12 A-10 games, they are 1-3 against Mason and 8-0 against everyone else. First game today is against St. Louis, who we beat twice earlier this season (the third game in the series was rained out). Unfortunately, the tournament is being played in St. Louis at Biliken Field, but it seems better to me than playing George Mason again.

To be fair, the scholarship limit for every team in the country is 11.7 scholarships. I don't know how many Rhody baseball has available to offer, but I'd guess that if there is a difference between them any other team in the country, it's a negligible one.

I'm pretty sure the info isn't public so unless anyone knows someone close to the baseball program it's going to be tough to figure out. With that said, I know the soccer team is fully funded so they have 9.5 scholarships. I really doubt baseball currently has 5 less scholarships than soccer but I guess it's possible.

Great effort by Davidson in 90 degree heat going 15 innings but coming up short 7-6. 5 hour 12 minute game
