I wonder if people are calling for Nebraska to drop football after such a lopsided loss, made even worse by the fact it was on their home field.

You don't see any difference between Nebraska and Rhode Island when it comes to football? Nothing about conference affiliation and revenue jumps out at you in terms of the calculus of whether you should have a program or not?

I assume you are not hearing calls for them to drop football because Nebraska has only had 3 losing seasons since 2002 (thats as far back as I looked) and is now 7-2 this season, with a win over #22 Oregon. That doesn't look like a program in distress...we wish we were in as bad shape as Nebraska. BC on the other hand...

Without looking it up...I'd venture that you could 'pick your time frame'...and URI would gladly trade records with BC?

I was really comparing BC to Nebraska since they both got a good beat down at home. BCs program is currently in distress and Nebraska just had a bad game. Yes, who wouldn't take BCs football program over ours, even as bad as they have been recently. But really the only thing URI and BC football have in common is they both stink...in fact we stink more.

They are definitely one of the best programs and I saw every one of the 84 points they scored against us. Which I think qualifies us as one of the worst!

Actually, if you go by the ESPN FCS Coaches Poll, James Madison is ranked #5 and they did this to the #1 Ranked Sam Houston State. Sam Houston received 22 of the 26 First Place Votes. Sam Houston was the only undefeated team in FCS going 12-0 until last night. Game was played at JMU.

Score was 65-0 in 3rd Quarter then JMU subbed heavily and turned off the engines to prevent further embarrassment.

Not sure the logic of the seeding that had JMU and Sam Houston meeting in the quarterfinals so soon

JMU is a powerhouse.

JMUs only loss was 56-28 to North Carolina early in the season at UNC. UNC finished 2nd in devisioc 5-3 and 8-4 overall. Would be interesting to see JMU play UNC now and on a neutral field, such as in a bowl game.

I have travelled to almost every school we face in the CAA and the inequality in facilities and support staff is startling. You cannot run an FCS football program on a "bake sale" budget and without the whole hearted support of the administration. URI needs to realistically examine what resources it will actually commit to provide, aka budget and facilities, and find a conference with schools that operate in similar parameters. Staying in an FCS conference and travelling up and down the east coast is not viable. URI had the chance to move to the NEC several years ago but wouldn't pull the trigger, not sure if it was influence/promises from the CAA or internal causes. Dropping football would be unfortunate and complicated. Title 9 requires equal "opportunities" so if you drop 70 or so male football players you need to lose the equivalent number of female athletes/sports. Adding Men's Hockey and Lacrosse as NCAA level sports would be complex, expensive and still might not retain enough spots. Best bet is to find a new conference, trim scholarships to fit, hire a young up and coming coach and start rebuilding now. The new weight room complex is a good start. Too much pride and tradition to walk away but it will only happen if the University buys in.

Old Dog, nice first post....I've said for a while that the Patriot League, now that they have scholarships, would be a good landing spot for URI.

Of course, we still need to upgrade Meade dramatically among other improvements.....

All it takes is money....easier said than done......

I don't see a fit at all with the Patriot League - I like the football they play - but not sure we fit in with a group of elite private academic institutions that think of themselves right below the Ivy League. How about being in a league with similar sized, same region, and presumably similarly funded State Universities. Oh, that would be the CAA! This is where we belong. If the powers who be - starting at the very top - do not understand what it takes to be a quality program like our regional conference mates do, then they are incompetent. If they don't care then it wouldn't matter what league we are in. I wish it were different, especially for the continuous waves of players who come here filled with expectations of playing meaningful football but leave with hopes dashed and often disgruntled.

We do not ever have a chance of having facilities on par with the top half of the CAA.......we're not even close with most of the others right now.....

We are small time.....trying to win with a shoestring budget......

maybe the admin is hoping to use some of the money from basketball NCAA appearances to help fund improvements in the near future.....oh wait....

Up until last year UNH's football facilities were not as good as Meade - but that did not stop them from making the playoffs 12 straight years. So, yes facilities are nice but clearly it is more than that.

Ed, it does look like the overall talent level is improving...it looks like they've found a decent QB......now about the coaching....is Fleming good enough? Oh and hire an OC please......

The next couple of years will tell....maybe if the recruiting keeps improving.....maybe a .500 team by then?

Any more than that is asking too much at the current level of support......

Well, yes, facilities help, but a winning atmosphere helps. But for URI football, facility improvement would be an outward sign that the Admin was serious.

Wholeheartedly agree, big improvement to facilities is the first step the administration needs to take as a signal that football is important and it important to the university. But ongoing, any sports program that URI endeavors to compete in has to be thought of just like the academic programs it offers - engineering, nursing, business, etc., where substandard will not be tolerated.

Well Ed, unfortunately substandard has been tolerated for far too long when it comes to the football program......imo the school simply doesn't have the money [or enough deep pocketed alumni] to foot the bill for millions to be spent on the program.....

Dooley promised lights and field turf 2 years ago as a start, and it still hasn't been done......

JMU continued its march in the FCS playoffs beating NDSU last night to advance to the national championship game. The Dukes win in Fargo prevented the Bison competing for their sixth consecutive national championship. Their record streak of five titles is over.

Substandard is an interesting observation, especially with the generous tax payers springing for more bond initiatives for the University almost every election cycle financing expansion of the physical plant. One would think that these large influxes of funding could free up some other capital monies for stadium upgrades; a new East Side stand and press box, lights and at least a contemporary score/video board.

You do understand the primary purpose of the university is to educate students, right? Those bond initiatives are funding necessary projects and there are plenty of necessary projects still in the pipeline. Perhaps the fifth quarter club could supply the funding if they want the stadium fixed so much.

Interesting that their Opponent Youngstown State suspended 5 players before their Semi Final Game. Will be interesting to see if those 5 will be eligible to play against JMU in the Championship Game.
Must have been some dumb or bad or both stuff these guys did to ruin their opportunity to play in such important games.

JMU and YSU have serious depth. Do not think any of these guys played last week.
There is a backup QB from SC gamecocks who played there and is buried on JMU bench.

Obviously the primary responsibility of any university is to educate students. But when you consistently bring in huge sums of supplemental funding to build new facilities it would seem that there should be some capital monies available to proportionally improve other campus facilities like the stadium to keep it on a par with the rest of campus, especially considering the visibility to visitors including potential students. As far as the Fifth Quarter Club goes, not sure how financing a new set of stands with press box, stadium lights and modern video board would be their responsibility, it's not a Pop Warner or local high school team relying on boosters.

To Thorr's and Fleming's credit, the program has gone 28-33 (18-27) since this game. Considering where it had been for about 15 years before and the facilities, that's no small feat. It looks even better when you exclude the disastrous 2019 campaign.

Now imagine if we actually get $42 million to invest in Meade. An absolute game changer. This program was put to sleep by previous administrations, Carothers we're looking at you, but could finally be ready to reach its full potential. There's a lot to be excited about right now, and that's all we wanted. Give us competitive football, give us hope for a brighter future, and get the facilities up to CAA par. Hopefully very soon we can say mission accomplished to all three
